  • Man, could you imagine Morbid Angel doing a cover version of this. Just listen to this and then God of Emptiness. This song has always stood out from the rest of Metallica's songs, to me. Kirk's solo here is probably my favorite. It's obscure, claustrophobic and mesmerizing. Hetfield should play the harmony to that little bit around 3:44!

  • Great Stage!

    Great Performance!

    Great Song!

METALLICA WHAT A GREAT FUCKIN' BAND!

  • HOLY FUK I AM LOVIN THE BASS!!!

  • Metallica and Download, kinda ironic!

  • Best night ever. Loved it, Take me back! Also - Love the power and emphasis hetfield throws out the word DEATH at 2:50

  • i hate when james makes that noise at 1:31

  • 3:00 to 3:04 james looks ceeepy s hell

  • man the start of the distortion sounds sound gritty :)

  • awesome

  • It's slower...Sounds alot better

  • holy crap hetfield is god!!!! iwas there download 2006 was killer 3 days of the best fucking bands alive!

  • The best live version to date.

  • No. S&M.

  • It's a different version on S&M.

  • So? It still kicks the shit out of this and any other version.

  • How do you mean?

  • They miss sections out on the S&M version.

  • I love this song, but it looks so strange in a live like this o.O

  • lol 4:11 Awesome song though .l,,l

  • @fbnsilent omg that was hilarious

  • they are so good

  • soy una niña y me encanta metalica!!!! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • si sabes la musica chingona

  • Love the Canadian Flag in the crowd!

  • how old is Kirk?

  • he had recently (18th November) his 47th birthday, and at this show, he was 44 years old

  • Kirk nailed the solo! !_!,

  • The pedals sound amazing!

  • @dnsbram Double bass pedals. Duuh

  • @metalistas1993 oow hahaha sorry man

  • Fucking awesome ;)

  • The Thing That Should Not Be

  • nov 10, buffalo!!

  • can somebody explain why james is changing picks all the time?

  • because your hands do tend to sweat!

  • because he either drops the pic or it breaks

  • or he throws them away ... I think he has enough control to not constantly drop them and I think he doesn't play that hard so that they break constantly ... but you can see him throw them into the crowd quite often

  • 4:50 OMG James that was freaking awesome.

    Metallica For Ever.

  • Fuck yeah! \,,/(=.=)\,,/

  • Kick ass solo by Kirk

  • Alot better then studio version. James with that Echo mic is amazing!

  • Anybody, and I SAY THIS TO ALL,if you like metallica you have to go to one of thier concerts at least once in your life,it is fucking epic, the energy is unreal, peace.

  • I have tickets to go see them in October! Just need some cash to get to Toronto. I watch live clips on youtube and I get pumped just from that. So at an actual concert I may die of a heart attack...but atleast I'd die happy :)

  • True that, it will be worth time and effort.

  • Hopefully Theyll Play Next Year At Download (Y) Im Going Too That :D

  • Well,I hope you get to go,I personally think I will be to broke, the economy has taken its toll on my pocket book lately,so things do not look up for me,I have seen them live four times in my short 31 years, and they were amazing everytime, peace.

  • amen to that brother

  • I´ve seen Metallica twice. Once in 2006, and once in 2008. My ass has still not recovered from the kicking it recieved.

  • i seen them perform this song on the "Justice" tour back in '88 in Ames, Iowa. Still, by far, the absoulute HEAVIEST God damned thing i have EVER, EVER heard at any concert. period.

  • I can say that I lived in the days of Hetfield.

  • GRANDE JAMES

  • oh the many faces of Lars...

    \m/

  • FUCKING EPIC!!!

    nuf said...

  • once a legend, always a legend

  • In my opinion thi songs sounds always good because they don't play it that much live but it kinda sucks cuz is one of my faves....

  • Hetfield rocks!!

  • one of the heaviest songs ever written.

  • yeah its tuned in like drop d

  • @Masterarium amen

  • a little..

    insane perfomance

  • I enjoy the little things about lars' drumming alot. Like the fact at the end of the song he starts playing on the crash and it just makes the heavy ass riff heavier, this song def kicks ass.

  • Can never be as good as they were live in the 80s in my opinion, but there still fucking amazing.

  • SHIT this performance is rocks!!!

  • DAMN...amazing live!!

and lars ulrich hair is longer =D

  • That solo omg

  • From 6:13-6:30; absolutely crunchy!

  • crunchy wtf? :S

  • Oh my Goooooooooodddddddddddddd !!!!!!!!!!!!

I love that performance from 2006 and after.

  • This is so fucking heavy. The best version though is easily the version from 89 in the Live Shit Binge&Purge boxset.

  • that part from 4:45-4:58 gives me chills. awesome!!!

  • this is insane. this is METAL!! so fucking heavy. bonecrushing

  • i think live sounds better for this song.....but still FUCK YA MetallicA FTW

  • Fucking love this solo

  • BONECRUSHING!!!

  • one word to span metallica's career

    CONQUER!!!

  • The ending beat is so fcking crushing.

  • One word: Oh My Fucking God How Fucking Awesome That Is.

  • Fuckin awsum song n a gd live version.

But i still prefer the sped up versions they did bck in the l8 80's (Y) :)

  • awesome vocal!!!

  • this song was record in drop d in the studio and wehen played live its in c#

  • It was actually recorded in d tuning. like regular tuning just a full step down.

  • That is the best live performance i have heard of this. Hetfield is on it. The badass beat at the end, they extended it.......fucking awesome.

  • well according to the master of puppets music book its just drop D low to high, you can tell they are playing in a drop tuning im guessing it is C# tuning cause it sounds lower then D.

  • They recorded the song at drop d but the perform it at drop c.That's it

  • to the person that said this was drop c. NO, THE WAY THEY'RE PLAYING IT IS DROP D#

  • actually, no, it's in drop C# tuning ;)

  • can sum1 answer me to why kirk wears that rubber band thing on his right hand i always wonderd thanks

  • it´s because he scratches his hand on the palm mute handle - at least that´s what I´ve heard

  • Epic drumming in the end. Fucking insane!

  • Meallica FUKIN RULEZ

  • awesome vocal

  • kills me that the crowd was almost silent when he was playing the intro. listen to seattle and you can feel the atmosphere through the screen

  • It's a different thing with festivals. The crowd is always louder than it sounds on TV ... plus seattle was a Metallica-Show were they wanted to capture that atmosphere

  • Just like Sad but true!

Original is a whole step down and live now 1.5 steps down!

Every other song who was in standart E is now in Eb!Load an Re-Load songs is still playing in Eb like the recordsongs!

So Metallica live tunings are 1,5 steps down, Drop C and Eb.

    Regards from Germany ;-)

  • this was recorded in D or drop D but was always played in Db tuning which is DbGbBEAbDb, you can clearly see they don't do any powerchord with only a finger so it has to be Db tuning and anyway Sad But True is still played in D tuning in which it was recorded, listen to this show's version for prrof

  • This is Drop C!

The original version on Master of Puppets is in Drop D!

But live they playing this song now since over 10 years in Drop C.

    Greetz!

  • This was the second time I saw Metallica, this song has always been one of my favourites and I went fukin sik when they played it, this is the best version I've ever heard!!

  • Fucking insane! Metallica!

  • it is the same key as Seattle 89, a half step down from the original

  • they maybe in thier 40's but fucking hell this among the heaviest i have ever herd metal up your ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hetfield's voice is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!

  • how can i give this 6 stars

  • oh man! that sound is absolutely amazing, and as a drummer I apreciate the kick drum sound as well...perfect!

  • im pretty sure this is in the same key as seattle 89

  • actualy i mite be wrong...

  • no same key, same notes, its played in D

  • Ain't this played in dropped D?

  • definitely not...you can see it in the beginning on james´ fingers

  • excactly, it can be played in dropped d, but they have always played in full step down (D tuning).

  • cant wait readin 08 :D

  • the solo... damn.

    speechless

  • it is so FUCKING heavy!

  • On this I think his voice is badass. But let's see how bad your voice would be after 25 years on stage and all that alcohol ...

  • bro cut him some slack.. he's getting old..

  • they playd it in full step down instead of drop d i wonder why?

  • they always play one step down live since the early 90's. apparently cus hetfield's voice range can't handle it live

  • These guys guys kicked serious ass in '89 when I saw them on the ...And Justice tour. Rock on!

  • haha yeah, metallica always kicks ass.

  • the baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssssssssssssssss is looooooouuuuuud

    good

  • yeah

but it's louder than Kirk's guitar

    baad

  • I like how James walks up to the mic in the first line like he's about to kick the livin shit out of it...hahah!

  • 100 out of 10

This is too good to be true!

  • let me re phrase that...burtons voice reminds me of hetfields

  • james's voice reminds me of burtons out of fear factory in parts of this song. i meant tht in a good way btw

  • god

  • Hetfield is a living got...he has returned.

  • Fucking 10 out of 10

    Fucking spot on

    Fucking quality

    Fucking proper stiffy

    Fucking Metallica

    Fucking Download 06

Fucking loved every minute of this set

    Fucking take me back man

  • james voice is coming back

  • shit and burge or S&M live. i love both a lot.

  • Which is the best Metallica DVD to buy? All the best numbers from Master of Puppets, JUstice and Black album with the best guttsiest sound quality?

  • live shit, binge & purge

  • DUDE!!! james and lars need to grow there hair out again! its just not the same w/out the long hair. oh well. best band ever!!!

  • you know this a good song to show the state of james voices. The angry parts he nails, but the slower calmer parts shows the cracks that are in voice box after 20 years of thrashing.

  • I would say almost 30 years of thrashing.

  • 1:15- - 1:20 he nailed it. good.

  • didnt james kinda sound like ozzy with that little laugh at 2:02? lol

  • My favorite song

  • is it just me or are the lyrics really fucked up?

  • i like it better when they play this live at a faster tempo

this is still a great performance

looking forward to the new album!

  • H.P. Lovecraft rules ;P

  • DUKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Quite possibly and honestly, the heaviest Metallica song on the planet.

  • Crawling Chaos, underground

    cult has summoned, twisted sound

    Out from ruins once possessed

    fallen city, living death

  • oh shit! i'm havin a blast! i'm comparing the 93 perofrmance with this one and i'm saying wow! not much of a difference. except different bassist! james has some of the same voice tones as the 93 vocals

  • man, james looks so old in this video. but i think that this song is way better then anyother metal song hands down ever, well laid to rest is close...

  • FUCKIN A. this kicks major major ass. i can't believe i haven't seen this video before. im hardcore metallica and had never seen it. true metal evil man. all these young guys should take note.

  • the most heavy evil song the world has ever known !!... Face the thing that should not be!! Metallica 4 life
