This song is incredable, not complex, but packed with emotion. For this song alone Helen Jane Long needs to be recognised alongside the other great cinematic composers of today, such as John Williams and Hans Zimmer, and i'm sure if she keeps up this standard in all her future compositions, I don't doubt she will.
@TheBadgerslayer no she doesn't, shes very good but Zimmer and Williams are in a different league, she writes minimilst music like Einaudi or Tiersen, its all opinion, but I find Zimmer and Williams can write music with far more depth, they write GREAT melodies alongside rich classical style music, Helen Jane Long writes music with simple chord structures and patterns - milimilist style, there are no great melodies in her music, just nice sounding structures and patterns.
@UKpiano Yes, you are right. I was having a bit of a fan-boy moment then. None the less, I would love to see her efforts composing for a film. She was assistant to Howard Shore on the LOTR soundtracks I believe.
@TheBadgerslayer yes she was, I am not being critical of her, I respect anyone who can write music, and good music like she does, however Zimmer and Williams are titans of the music world, hardly anyone is as good as them anyway, I would consider them more or less in the realms of great compsers of our time, even in all of history, especially John Williams who is legendary and as good as the great classical composers.
@UKpiano indeed. Hans Zimmer I would say is the greatest composer of our times. Although Williams is the master of fantastic/epic scores (see Jurassic Park) I find Zimmer is superior because he embraces and incorperates more modern styles. For examle the Inception Sound Track uses a lot of synthesisers and electronic elements, and the Black Hawk Down soundtrack is full of what seems like almost industrial rock/nu-metal guitars. HJL writes in a different style, minamilist. Not a criticism though.
@TheBadgerslayer I would say that Zimmer is one the greatest film composers of our time. I would say that Williams is the greatest composer of our time. People don't realize that sometimes they hear him everyday when NBC News, and The Today Show comes on. And I don't think anyone has made two notes so famous has John Williams has (JAWS). While Zimmer is awesome, I would love to see what he would do outside the film world. I bet it would be amazing.
@Silvercrystal77 Zimmer has composed for Video Games before, most famously the Call of Duty franchise. I think it's stuff like those compositions (although in fact I wasn't too impressed by the CoD soundtracks) that sets Zimmer appart. Where as Williams tends to compose very orchestral pieces, Zimmer isn't afraid to innovate with electric guitars (black hawk down/call of duty) and even breach on the avant garde (inception)
@TheBadgerslayer No. He isn't. I think the whole Williams vs. Zimmer question is definitely a matter of opinion. They are two fantastic composers each with their own style. Zimmer was chosen for movies like Inception bc of his progressive styles whereas Williams was chosen for Star Wars specifically to write a full symphonic orchestral score that wld be completely opposite to any score that had been written for a space movie before which really only had a lot of scary sound effects.
@Silvercrystal77 Absolutely. I think we ought to leave this whole zimmer/williams debate here at risk of annoying people who watch this video and leave it as Helan Jane Long is a fantastic composer and I eagerly await her to do a soundtrack in it's entirety.
@UKpiano You're right. She is what a lot of people call a New Age composer like George Winston. While she doesn't have strong themes in her music I do think that she has great melodies in her music.
took me forever to find this thing thank you

@TheBadgerslayer I disagree I would call Howard Shore the greatest, but it's all a matter of opinion.
