I've used A99s for years. They work very well. Talked all over the planet with them. I now run an Rci-2995dx, rci-2970n2 and an FT-1000mp into one w/gpk up only 26' to the base and I smoke everyone within ten miles of me. Might be cheap junk but they do their job.
@jmaterne1 I also use an A-99 antenna. Been using it since 1993 and it works well. I only talk DX and over the past 35 years I have run many different antennas and the A99 really performs. I work the world on it.
mine is the shit!!! with a flat match and 600 pure watts popin out the top dx is my bitch!!! fuck you ham assholes!!! we from the 27mhz are soo taking over your bands!!! hahahahah lmao!!!!
ham is the new cb band! cqdx my ass.... hahaha send me a qsl card... what a joke!!!!
7 out of 10 the down side was the TVI and it cost over $300.00 with the GPK MANY YEARS AGO I should put it back up with all the recent DX on10 and 11 many way good luck with what ever you are using
I have had one for many years with the GPK the ant works but causes T V I so I don't use it the thing I like about it is it's quick to erect and works well on 15m as well so I would rate it at
I have been using an Antron 99 for the past 19 years now. I have had many antennas since I started back in 1977. The antenna I had before my A-99 was a Hy-Gain Super Golden Penetrator . I think it put out 5.1 DB gain. I have had several beams as well.
@TheUncleDougger Why would I waste my time getting a Ham ticket when I can anywhere on 11 Meters. You guys who are into Ham radio think you are better than everyone else, but in actual fact you are far from it. You better look in the mirror before calling me a Moron, because I am far from it. What it boils down to is communication. What's the big deal if you talk 20 Meters or 11 ? All the same to me
is very nice antenna, bat no is te best performance,i sold my a 99 and now use a new opek hcs 100,is better, more resistant a more gain... tks...nice video
ive had my antron up on the roof now since 1997, the swr is still 1,1 even if i push 100 watts into it the swr stays the same. i used to have a dpa 11vr , in 1987 in the uk we had a hurrican, the wind bent the aerial into the shape of a boomarang, the antron has been in heavy winds but always springs back with no bends. the only thing i have to replace is the six ft steel pole thats its on, as its getting very rusty now.
I have had one on my roof for over 10 years now with no problems ...talk skip and to all over depending if I throw my boots on ...lol it is a good all around antenna for the price...there is better though and a few way worse..good bang for the buck ..sorta say
This antenna is one huge lightening rod in that there is no way for the fiberglass to bleed off a built up electrical charge since it's electrically isolated from the actual transmitting element inside the hollow fiberglass tube.
I had one in the early 80's on my tower which was grounded very well and the Ant got blown to kingdom come.
I also talked with two people who experience the exact same thing with theirs recently.
I have had A-99 with and without the GPK and I can say the GPK is a plus. I could work any DX I could hear. Nice video but one thing I noticed you didn't put a drip loop in your install. I made the same mistake and what happened was when there is strong winds the pole will flex and pull the pl connector loose from the antenna. Thats about it (216)
As I understand it (a discussion with one of the parties), two guys owned the company manufacturing the original Antron-99. When they split up (reasons unknown), one of the two (holding control over the tuning coil at the bottom of the antenna) started a company selling the Solarcon A99 (new name for Antron-99) and others. The other guy sold a very similar antenna without the tuning coil, but I haven't seen that antenna on the market for some time now.
Anyone have the dimensions of the box - length and sides? I have to ship one of these overseas and it appears to be very close to the maximum size allowed by the military postal service. I'm sure it isn't heavy, so weight is not an issue.
Following up, the Solarcon A99 (with optional ground plane kit) was delivered (no problems with military postal service) and is working fine. Installed both with and without ground plane radials. Noise dropped significantly with ground plane radials. Proper antenna grounding reduced noise further. No _discernable_ difference between this antenna and either the Hy-Gain penatrator or Imax 2000 (both 5/8 wave verticals).
remember the antron a99 is only a 1/2 wave antenna, not the best for dx working, high angle on the horizon, would be better with a 5/8 wave or larger vertical like imax or sigma 4,much lower angle of rf on the horizon and more dx,but antron is good antenna, will take a beating of the weather.
a99 is a good antenna i use my a99 on 10 meters and with a good tuner it will tune 10-17 meters and also 20meter they are a good antenna 73's from kj4aqv
This is a GREAT antennae, I used to shoot skip from California to Australia running power. This Antennae will handle a lot of frequencies and power. I'm thinking of getting back into it, firing up my tweeked Ranger AR3500, thinking about getting an Antron99.
Hello..I don't recall there being anything else with the antenna..It went together very smoothly & had no trouble with mounting..Hope that answers your question..Thanks..Mel

More like "Send your signal into outer space".
They work reasonably well, but are very overpriced for something that works about as well as a standard half wave.

Those CLAMPS are going to look GREAT on my Truck muffler! :)
HerbWalker 3 years ago
those radials dont do nothing i compared 2 antrons one with and one without and no gain there the same the radials only make it look nice thats it
LAZYDOG505 3 years ago
if that's a ground plane, then you are missing the radials. What you actually have, without the radials is a simple vertical, not a ground plane.
Add the radials, you'll get a lot more bang out of it...

Nice installation! Install the GPK-1 Kit and raise it up another 20 feet, and you should be able to work anybody that you can hear!
Take Care,
