  • Pink Blasticks xD

  • geeeez watch the volume

  • @TheOOTB jeeeez check out the simple way I recorded it

    :-)

  • @TheOOTB hahaha

  • I played drums for about 7or8 yrs when i was only 12 -13 Beatles Hermans Hermits you get the point. Then i saw Genesis and watched Phil play drums.Next i saw Led Zep ,ELP Carl Palmer and i knew i could never play like that.So i took up guitar best thing i ever did .

  • @ChaoticDayZ If it makes you feel any better, I still look at Genesis, Zep, etc and wonder if I ever made the right decision myself :-) I too can never play like them, though it is great fun trying!

  • Hard to play i was a drummer for 10 yrs before taking some time off.Now Im really into acoustic guitar. Keep onn playing you have a special talent.I hope guitar will be mine ,so far so good. Take Care-Bruce(ChaoticDayZ)

  • Fair Fux to any drummer who cares to attempt this time-tangle-twister of a beast! Jouxplan your the champ my man!

  • @1969atam I thank you!

  • Hi Jouxplan. I think you can learn a lot from Nirad .... It modulates his shot perfectly and I think if you look closely you will see that the song is not so complicated ...

    Best wishes!

  • The end is really sloppy .... Too bad!

You must learn to hit your MODULATING ....

I advise you to go see NIRAD playing the song perfectly.

    Regards.

  • @masterguss1976 Nirad is indeed wonderful - I have watched his stuff previously :-)

'Sloppy' is a bit harsh, but certainly, I am at the limit of my ability and find it very hard to play, as do most of us amateurs. I certainly don't have time or ability to think about modulation - jesus, I can barely play the end at all!!!

  • La fin est vraiment bâclée .... Dommage !!

Il faut que tu apprennes à MODULER ta frappe ....

Je te conseille d'aller voir NIRAD qui joue parfaitement ce morceau .

    Amicalement.

  • Alot of ppl cover this and leave out all of the drum work. Though this isn't perfect you get props to being the only person to play it as cloesly to the original. fantastic job!

  • @KMatteKudasaiC For sure my cover is a long, long way from perfect! I find this an astonishingly complex and difficult part to copy. Many thanks!!!

  • Really nice from a ex drummer now guitar player.

  • @ChaoticDayZ Cheers!

  • That was excellent, very well done. Sounds smooth and tight enough to me.

  • @Ouzo1991 I thank you :-)

  • In the very beginning the ending part of the roll is a triplet done really fast, but good job

  • @CrashmagFilms Ok, I missed that! Many thanks :-)

  • genesis is so raw...this song and watcher of the skies is my favvvy

  • wanna make a " virtual "genesis cover band??

  • Yes!

I am working with a keyboard player at the moment ('virtually' via YouTube) on a 1987 Genesis Medley - In The Cage, In That Quiet Earth and Apocolypse 9/8 and end of Suppers Ready.

We are looking for a guitarist and a singer. Are you interested?

  • @jouxplan If you are still looking for a guitarist I would be very interested!

  • @AlexSlams Hello!

I think we now have a guitarist for the medley I mentioned above, but it would be worthwhile keeping in touch for our next video. Can you private message me and I will give you more details about this cyberspace band. At present, the only fixed members are keys and drums. Guitar, bass and vocals are currently being recorded, I believe, but we are likely to vary the musicians for future covers.

As I say, please do get in touch, and I can tell you much more :-)

  • ABSOLUTLY FANTASTIC!!!!

    Very good jobb!!!!

  • Cheers!

  • Set you a video from the guitar player and a probable bass player... I'm In!!!

  • GR8!!!!!!!

  • Nice work man!

  • I thank you!

  • buen baterista, imita bien a phill collins

  • According to google, this says -

"good drummer, mimics well phill collins"

    Many thanks :-)

  • Great!

I just cant understand how The Phil managed to play drums in syncopated rhythm AND sing.

  • Glad you enjoyed it!

Don't forget that on these studio recordings, he will have done the drumming and singing at different times, on seperate recording tracks. When playing live, he generally has Chester Thompson doing the drumming whilst he sings, and only gets on the kit himself for the 'exciting bits'! However, you are right, and he does sometimes sing and drum at same time. 'Follow You Follow Me' is an example - and even with that 'simple' beat it is hard to sing at same time!

  • He didn't. I'm pretty sure Chester was in the band by this time.

  • Chester only played when they played live. In the studio, Phil recorded the drum part seperately from the vocal.

    :-)

  • More impressive than your technique is your phenomenal ability to play in 7/4 like phil. unreal.

  • :-)

  • I'm not a drummer, but this looks much more complicated than Squonk to me. And I was blown away by your Squonk. VERY NICE !!!

  • Ha! ha! Ha! I thank you!

Well, you are quite right - this version of Volcano is a LOT more technical to play than the original of Squonk. That said, it is remarkable how much detail Phil put into Squonk - something that many of us amatuer drummers start out thinking is 'an easy one to copy' - and we are wrong! It is not easy either!

Glad you enjoyed them both, anyway!

  • You can watch all the Genesis videos, but it's not until you see them presented the way you have that you can fully grasp how intricate and complicated Phil's drum patterns are. Once again, it's a great thing you're doing for Genesis fans.

  • That is a wonderful thing to say - thank you!

I am going to have to add this comment to my 'favorite comments' area on my jouxplan website :-)

  • very great job

  • Great drumming. And doing Phil Collins is not easy at all. Congratulations!

  • You are very kind! Thank you!

  • Love this song....I don't normally take the time to watch a cover but yours was worth it....great job man....

  • Then that is very high praise indeed!

    I thank you!

    :-)

  • Namaste

  • Comment removed

  • really good, recording deteriores the identity of the play

what type of drum stick do you use?

  • They are Flix Sticks. Get them from a good Ebay shop - they are made in Scotland.

    Cheers!

  • Fantastic job! I love Genesis and have been thinking of taking up the drums. You're an inspiration indeed.

  • That's very kind of you - I am humbled.

  • good job, but the song wasn't loud enough. after the 3 minute mark your drums drowned out the song.

  • Terrific stuff mate!

  • It's not in 7/4. It's in 7/8. 7/4 is the time signature "Money" by Pink Floyd is in. 7/8 sounds like 4/4 with an 8th note cut off.

  • Quite probably true - I have once again demonstrated my technical ineptness!!

I have never had lessons, and drum / music theory is not my strong point! All I know is there are seven beats. Whether I should place a 4 or an 8 under it frankly means nothing to me :-)

    I just play what I hear..........And 'Money' is a good example of a 7/4 - thank you!

  • Although Phil played drums for the studio version, Chet Dodbe, who played in their tours and some later studio sessions, was one of the few who could pull off Phils whacky syncopation technique. You were brilliant, my friend. You did great! Kudos to you.

  • That is certainly news to me - I am ashamed to say I have never heard of Chet Dodbe. I thought there was only Chester and Bill, at various points, live. When and on what did Chet play?!

Anyway, many thanks! You are very kind!

  • 2.42 -3.20 looks particularly difficult to play. i wonder how phil actually was able to create these complicated pieces back in the 70's !! pure genius!

  • Yes, that section is horrific, and frankly, I have not played it very well - it's those doubles on the bass drum with the quick open hi hat pushes - I cringe everytime I play that bit back!

As for 'how did Phil create it back then'? Genius indeed! Who amongst us could possibly have (a) come up with this drum part, then (b) had the balls to try and play it in the first place and then (c) actually pulled the godamn thing off in the studio??!!! Not me, that's for sure!

    :-)

  • god how the hell do u manage to do all them bass drum hits at the start as well as playin the cymbal etc, peeps who dont kno drums will assume tht this songs easy to copy but there wrong

  • Ha! Ha! Although I am not sure exactly which bit you are talking about - what time on the vid?

This song is one of the hardest I know to copy, that is for sure.

  • 0.43 to 1.06

  • Ah! For me, that bit is ok - it is the bit just after 1.06 that kills!

The bass drum hits you are talking about just flow along with the music, and sit nicely under the cymbal crashes and things. Once all your limbs can move easily and freely without any real mechanical 'forcing', you should be able to 'feel' the music and simply play that bit just as it sounds. I don't know how else to explain it. I realise it is a lot easier said than done!

    :-)

  • Great! Bravissimo!

  • the drums in this song are all kinds of nasty...nice work!

  • 'All kinds of nasty' LOL! You have a knack for writing great phrases!

Absolutely agree with you - this track kinda scares the crap out of me!

  • That was incredible. This looks tough as hell to play, especially near the end

  • Hey, thanks!

It is horribly difficult, and although I have sort of played along to it for 20 years, trying to learn it and play it as accurately as I could for this video nearly killed me!

Yes, the outro is, shall we say, a tad hectic!

Mr. Collins was on fire when he layed this track down in the studio, that is for sure!

    :-)

  • i know right...plus in this song phil sang along with his drum playing...tough shyt man!!! gotta love it

  • hot performance....it's hard to step in to one of the best and hard drums song! anyway I loved it! amzing work! keep rock'n'roll 5*****

  • I thank you!

  • Damn thats impressive, i've played for nearly 25 years and i can play this part too but i must admit your bass foot work is extremely good! Keep it up!

  • Hey, thank you!

If it is any consolation, this is at the absolute limit of my ability on bass drum, in the outro. I really struggled with it!

    :-)

  • Yet another truly difficult Phil Collins cut! Well done jouxplan! Doin' Phill's stuff IS quite a workout, ain't it mate?

  • Yes, I find this one extremely difficult to play, and the outro IS a tad hectic!

    :-)

  • I just placed a text comment on "down and out" I think you r a very talented man, I agree, PC drumming became more and more complex after Nursery Crime.

  • That's very kind of you!

I forgot to say on your other comment that Rush also is affected by the copyright problem.

  • I know that this is a difficult song (I can hardly play it). Good job !

  • goog job all of genesi i like genesis good joob

  • You are not dumb, and you got it the first time.

-Use more of your instinct and less what you already know.

    All the best.

  • Hi,

I know Phil Collins personally; I worked with him on the Lion King soundtrack and on his Broadway produced show "Ciucciam'e U'Cazz".

I think he would like your rendition a lot...just a word of advice, use more and play less, kno' meann!

  • Wow!

Although I have to say I not at all sure what he would make of my efforts on here - whether this video or my others! I think he would laugh! I would probably prefer him to look at my attempt at Supper's Ready, or Squonk studio - he might actually not laugh at every bar in those ones!

I may be stupid, but your advice - 'use more and play less...'.

Er, use more what? Heart? Soul? Feel? It's Monday and I am at work - maybe I am just being dumb this morning!

    :-)

  • Hey terni12, how's it goin mate? next time you talk to Phil, tell him that "Wo" (Dan's brother) says HI! Please tell him to not be such a stranger! We haven't heard from him in ages!! Cheers!

  • thanks for replying, i laughed about the dustbin lids comment hehe, another question do u think phils style is on powerful drumming? thanks

  • I don't understand the question, sorry!

  • hi joux, does phil use the ride at 2 23? it doesnt sound like it i dont kno, im sure you know tho? thanks

  • To be honest I am not sure. When I played it with just the hi hat going, it did not sound right. That is possibly because compared to Phil's hi hats, mine sound like a couple of dustbin lids clanging together!

To me, it does sound like there is a ride cymbal going on underneath the hi hat. If it is just a hi hat, then Phil is opening and closing it beautifully delicately at fairly high speed. Also, it must be a set of big diameter, thin hats, and beautifully microphoned-up!

    :-)

  • dude, genesis is cool, but do you like do other stuff?

  • On YouTube, I play mostly Genesis and The Police, 'cos that seems popular, 'cos I love it, and 'cos I can just about pull it off. I do other stuff too - on here I have posted vids of me doing Grace Jones, Supertramp, Rush, Talking Heads, Robbie Roberstson, Sting, Phil Collins, The Cadbury's Gorilla Advert and even my own band......

  • epic bass drum patterns near the end

  • They are not as tight as I would like 'em to have been, but thank you! Phil's bass drum work at the end is just awesome......

  • I liked it. Nice drumming. I`m a beginner, but i think you should relax yourself a bit more while you are playing. It`s difficult and it`s your own way of drumming, I know, but I think you spend lots of energy that you could save by relaxing a bit. You are a bit tense.

Thanks a lot for your covers. ;-)

  • Thank you, and I agree with all that you say. But yes, that is my style, and that's difficult to change!

    :-)

  • This is only a suggestion but i think you should loosen your crashes a little bit especially the one on the left its very tight and that causes cymbals to crack, so loosen and the cymbal can express its sound more, hope you take my advice and great drumming, but just experiment with cymbal tightness, trust me it matters haha, keep rockin jouxplan!

  • That's a fair point, and I agree. Sometimes I do like to tighten that little splash though!

You will be pleased to know that at the moment it is fairly loose!

    Cheers!

  • That must so difficult to play! Really brilliant..Thanks.

  • i know ive said this a million zillion times but this is masterpiece drumming from jouxplan. Oh and i havent said yet that he has a great taste in music!

  • if you like collins sound and use zildjian, you should consider 16' n' 17' a custom projection crashes (very clear and focused) k custom ride (beautiful strong ping, very little wash) and the a custom projection hats (amazing for open/closed playing, strong chick, and very versatile) 18' china trash (agressive, trashy and loud)i don't work for zildjian,i like paiste cymbals, but those cymbals would suit you set up like a glove and you would get a more together sound

  • True, but I use Flix sticks a lot, and a 17" crash would not make a sound with 'em! I already have a custom A 16" crash, on the right. The one on the left is a 15" Paper Thin circa 1986. I love it, and it's great for my flix sticks.

    :-)

  • there r some left notes, but the reason i'm writing this comment is that you should seriously change the configuration of your set, simply because you're making more effort than you should, your crashes would feel more comfortable more on the left and inside (the left crash a little lower and the right next to it (chek out danny carey's set for that matter)

  • Hmmmmm. Interesting point. I do keep moving the crash on my left, and had it nearer the splash over the hi hat recently. However, it felt weird, so I moved it back near centre. have always had a crash near the ride, simply so I can get from ride to crash quickly. never thought to put 'em both on the left.

Without doubt I hit cymbals badly - its 'cos I played with nothing but brushes for 15 years, and this has had a permenant affect on my style. Only played with sticks again three months ago!

  • i now realise how hard that cover must of been how did you go through the whole thing without loads of mistakes?

  • Lots of practise!

  • Again, great playing!

Now, would you try Cinema Show (studio)? The bit in 7/8 includes one of the best drumming by Phil.

And as I wrote somewhere else, it seems that you really admire Phil's playing in "riding the scree". Why don't give it a try? In 9/8... just like Supper's Apocalypse... but a faster beat... just amazing drumming.

Yes, I know, requests and more requests. Sorry.

  • Thanks again!

I'm doing Cinema Show live first! Scree is horrific, and although I once could play the first half, not at all sure I am capable of second half - Phil is awesome on it. Makes Suppers Ready seem easy. Have you seen my Suppers Ready cover?

  • Yep. Very nice.

  • Trust me, mate. You are ready for the studio version of Supper's Ready! This was awesome.

  • Ha! Ha! Thank you for that! I take it you have seen my live version of Supper? Not sure I am up to studio version, but I will look into it, I promise!

  • too rigid. try to feel the music.

  • Ever attempted Emerson, Lake and Palmer?

Carl Palmer, the greatest drummer of all time..

  • just a small suggestion. i would invest in a pair of vic firth head phones. They prevent a lot of the sound from coming through and you can hear the music without blasting it. The save your ear A LOT.

  • Thank you - i will look into that!

  • Wow, Awesome!

You are one hell of a drummer;)!

hope to see more of you!

  • Thank you!

Have a look at my channel for all my Genesis (and Police) vids. You can also subscribe, which means everytime I post a new vid, YouTube lets you know.

    :-)

  • Thanks! I just did;)

Can you post a vid with Brand X?

    That would be great!!!

I really LOVE Brand X and Genesis.

and I know it's a though job, my dad also plays genesis on drums (And I'm playing genesis on the guitar)

  • Thank you!

I have not heard any Brand X for like 20 years! My memory is it was horific (as in, amazing drumming). Not sure I am capable, but you are the second person to ask this - I will get hold of some and have a listen with my now more experienced ears! No promises though!!!!

  • Thank you! Started playing aged 8, self taught, now 42, so thats 34 years. Wish I was younger. Phil always played exactly the right drum part for the song, and always the best fills for the songs. Beautifully technical and not afraid to be inventive.

  • Well I think this song is ok but you really need to work on your skills. I think it might just be the audio but idk

  • Well done. I was thoroughly impressed with the entire Trick of the Tail album the first day I heard it ~1975. You give the viewer an inside look at Phil's percussion skills & talents. How long have you been playing? What impresses you most about Collins abilities? Thank you for the video.

  • Some time ago a freind of mine said that phil is a good drummer but he isnt technical. Obvioulsy he hasnt heard this stuff. It winds me up when people just think of phil with his poppy stuff.

  • Do you reckon that phil collins could drum to this song nowadays?

  • Yeah, I am sure he could!

  • Er, just for the record, my comment was not 'sarcastic'. I actually mean that I am sure Phil Collins could still play it spot on.

  • awesome great job keep up the good work

  • Whats your view on the new sacd versions i assume you got the box set? do you think they sound better? or not? sorry to be a bit obsessive but not many people drum to genesis tunes and reply back.

  • So far I have only played Volcano and Squonk from the SACD, and I was drumming akong to 'em for my vid, so not really noticed differences yet. I am still intrigued how you could identify it as the SACD from my youtube post!

  • Could you try and do Genesis Down and out. from and then there were three album.

  • Thanks for the comments! Down and Out is not something I have ever attempted - I certainly know it, it's extremely interesting on drums! I will give it a go sometime!

  • YE sorry great covers, dance on a volcano you do very well and squonk was fantastic too your a great drummer. I guess you had to tune your drums a bit to get the collins sound huh lol

  • Thanx jouxplan for noting my requests yor a top bloke and could you please do los endos (studio version) thanx.

  • Thanks - hope you liked this Volcano cover (and the Squonk one) - you have not actually said what you think of 'em!

I have listed all my planned covers on my channel - have a look. Los Endos studio is not on my 'set list' (!), though the live version is. Let me get through my intended list, then I could maybe try the studio one for you!

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB!
