All the dunks are nice, but I'm a huge fan of defense, even in this video highlighting dunks you see the "block party" that Hakeem was throwing. The paint was his house and the opposing team was not welcome.
College basketball may be the one sport that's gotten worse over the years. There's not a team in the country today that could stay within 20 points of these guys and they never won a national championship. One of those "I wish" matchups would be Phi Slamma Jamma against the 1990 UNLV team.
The Thing That Im Most Proud Of , Being A Proud H-Towner, Myself, Is, That With the Exception Of Olajuwan(Nigeria) And Benny Anders(Louisiana) ,Most Of The Team Was Composed Of Players From The Local High Schools, Who Were Not Heavily Recruited.
@dishman1966 Probably similar to Hakeem and Sampson as the twin towers but that only lasted a lil bit, but at least got 1 NBA finals and destroyed the Showtime lakers in '86 WCF.
God i miss these guys, when houston was Phi Slamma jamma it was the first year i sat and watched every game. but i hate talking about it because they lost the NCAA championships but these guys were the best
OP...Phi Slamma Jamma - The Doctors of Dunk? No...that title was, as still is reserved for 1980 Louisville Cardinal squad. Regardless UH was one most impressive, devastating college basketball teams ever. They literally ran & dunked MF'ers out of the building.
Benny Anders had the power of the jheri curl. Awesome. Also noticed that no one was willing to take a charge on Clyde because he came in there with his knee up. Try to take a charge and get your head knocked off.
I played against these guys. It's hard to explain the fear in the heart of a point guard going up against the PSJ 3/4 court press with Rose at top, Hakeem in middle, Young and Drex on wings, and Rob shake-n-bake Williams back. The wingspan of Drex, Young, and Hakeem felt like it was sideline to sideline. I still have nightmares. They drooled for a dunk-a-thon. Arkansas was tough too. I remember eating Tony Brown's knees on a breakaway at Barnhill arena. Crazy pig fans, damn!
Man those were the days when college bball was the best. There had been full integration of the southern schools for 10 or 12 years and all the top NBA talent stayed in school for 3 or 4 years. We will never see teams like that again.
man i was in high school back in brookshire texas 1982-86. i would not miss watching the cougars have a dunk fest on a lot of teams. man they had one of the most eletric teams ever to put on college jerseys.akeem, clyde, michael young, larry micheaux, benny anders, alvin franklin, reid gettys, that was a squad.i remember watching the championship game vs.n.c st. wolfpack. i was sick for weeks after that play. man that shit stills pisses me off 27 years later. this was real basketball. phi slamma jamma
I feel you pain...still have to watch that highlight versus NC State and it makes me sick...that was the best team ever and they lost because of free throws and a fluke play.
When you average close to 100 points a game and could score at will, didn't need to shoot free throws...as I recall they averaged about 30 wins a year during their run...doesn't appear that free throws decided very many of their games!
Seriously thanks for putting this up, tight ass music with it also. It always bums me out the fun and memorable college teams never win the championship (77,87,91 UNLV TEAMS, 08 MEMPHIS, 88 OKLAHOMA, 89 ILLINOIS and the 83,84 HOUSTON TEAM
Yep, all very entertaining teams. That '89 Illinois team knocked out a very talented (and entertaining) SU team in the Elite 8. One of the better NCAA games I've ever seen. All kinds of talent on the floor. Too bad Sherman Douglas fouled out in this, the last game of his SU career.

I agree. Mike Young gets overlooked as well.

I loved their matchups with Louisville... fast break after fast break dunk after dunk, back and forth. The two best college dunking teams ever.

The best team lost to North Carolina State in the 83 NCAA tournament by a dunk lol!go Pack

@polarbearjew Guy Lewis got too comfortable and spread out the court, that's how we lost. Really more a Cougars loss than a Wolfpack win.
