alright so Monfils admits emulating Roddick's serve, but why criticize him, it's a great serve and it's fundamentally sound if more players really worked on their serve (motion and all) you might see more serves looking similar to Roddick's and also being more effective, so why criticize Monfils for doing it correct...unless the serve is too difficult so only a few can do it, but that seems a long shot to me:)
yeah but Monfils serves with both feet really tight together while Roddick leaves plenty of space in between (which also causes him to plunge forward like you see in the video response, which is probably the reason why Monfils puts his feet tighter together). I love Monfils' eccentricities and I hope he becomes a great champ someday (he sure has the talent)
Gael and his friends used to try and model their serves exactly like Roddick's. I think he said it in an interview a while back. Roddick's does seem more natural in his movement though
according to wikipedia, when they wer younger, monfils and tsonga would practice for hours to achieve a serve like roddick's..that's why the motion looks so similar
for those of you who are thumbing down comments that are pointing out the similarities between this serve and roddick's. tsonga and monfis on an interview said they tried to emulate roddick's serve when they were younger..
lol at people who say Monfils didn't rip the serve off Andy Roddick. Just in case yous don't know he never use to serve like that during the early junior days. It was only when Roddick came into scene that he started changing his motion. Roddick's serve is the best in the world, technique wise it is by far the best power transferring motion. Why not copy it? But it's not like Monfils will ever achieve a better ranking than Roddick ever did anyway.
He may have copied Roddick but Roddick didnt have that service motion when he was a junior either. He had a classic serve form with a traditional take back. And Roddick doesnt have the best serve in the world. The fastest but not nearly the best. He doesnt even serve the most aces per season with it.
All of these stats have been for many consequtive years now. He's always up there in top 3. His only let down have always been only his horrible footwork, baseline and volley game. How is his serve not "nearly the best"? Give me a break if you're taking account into the demented giant named Ivo Karlovic.
Damn i had no idea he won so many of his service games. But that isnt the point. Roddick's service game percentage includes his groundstrokes and overall game so that is not a good indication of how good his serve is. When i said not nearly the best, i was exaggerating because i really dont even remember writing that but i am sticking to my opinion that Roddick doesnt have the best serve because against good players, it usually doesnt have much of an effect.
Everybody have their own opinion it's ok :) I understand also what you are talking about. If you are to talk about against top players, right now at this moment I do think Djokovic have the best serve against them. He varies it EXTREMELY well. Very tricky, but second serve can be break down due to the risk he takes.
Roddick has the best serve technique wise and if he were 6-10 he'd prolly be serving 160mph +. You only have to look at his serve in slow motion to see this.
the aesthetic beauty of his serve is questionable but if I had to chose a present day serve as my own (not including height) it would definitely be Roddick's at no. 1.
PS. Goran would be my all time choice. 1000+ aces in a season in three different seasons!!!
Roddick has the most powerful serve ever, and it is far from a technically sound motion. There is nothing wrong with Monfils emulating a very successful motion, especially considering he is, much like Roddick, a very powerful player.
Of course it is mere speculation, but many people were and are still of the opinion that it could eventually be a problem. It is not the smoothest motion, and he could well go his entire career without a significant shoulder injury. Roddick serves it the hardest, but if I were going to teach a motion, it would be Sampras or even Federer, not Roddick.
cha I wouldn't teach anyone to imitate a pro's motion... as long as the fundamentals are sound (which Roddick, Sampras etc. all have in common) they can do whatever motion they want. If they so happen to chose a motion that looks like roddick, while maintaining sound fundamentals (just like monfils has) then good on 'em.
i don't get why people thinks he's a copycat.'caz Roddick became famous 1st becaz of this serve style? As u know, there's many way to hit serve and these 2 players happen to use same way. Besides, this is the newest and one of the most popular style these days. Why he has to be blamed...?
Some people are dumb as hell... I serve just like that and it's not because I want to be like Roddick. That's how I was trained by a tennis pro to serve. If anything, you go back into the past and watch Boris Becker's serve; when he was young... then you'd have to say Andy Roddick stole his serve from Boris; with just a slightly lower toss.
roddick hits it more infront, monfils more towards 1 to 2 position, oh man if monfil serve exact same as roddick, his serve would be MASSIVE even more so then roddick, what gives roddick the massive speed is, the expolsivness of his service motion, here u see monfils just using the motion, but his not BOOM! exploding into the ball like roddick
and of coz its still big dont get me wrong, bigger then ill ever be able to hit, but yea
He using a dunlop?

what about karlovic
appppppppple 3 years ago
Karlovic's serve is one of the best because his amazing height allows him to hit angles that other players can't hit. So jealous haha
roadlesstaken 3 years ago
ok you didnt have to tell me that, i was arguing one priser saying roddick has the most powerful serve ever....
appppppppple 3 years ago
lol how is it not technically sound?
davoho 3 years ago
Well, there is speculation that the motion could eventually cause shoulder injuries.
priser24 3 years ago
The KEYWORD there is speculation...
People speculated about this in '00 and '01 yet 7 years on not a single shoulder injury.
Roddick's serve has beautiful technique that utilizes his whole body and he is in no way more likely to contract an injury then any other big server.
Ivanisevic suffered from a debilitating shoulder injury yet I'm sure there was little to no speculation that this would happen.
Just shows how accurate unjustified speculation is...
