  • He using a dunlop?

  • winner after winner

    argh pros are too good

  • I am so jealous. Was this during the practice sessions? Did you go to any games? See any other players?

  • @throughsamseyes Yup, it was a practice sessions. There were tons more players there too. Love it!

  • I think this is harder on the knees than a traditional platform serve like Federer or Sampras, but I can serve harder with my feet together.

  • @michelleinmke it's not at all.

  • he is imitating roddick's serve, but he sucks at it. athletic fucker though

  • i see a head racket (: thats right xD haha hmm his feet are so close together...i might try that xD

  • looks like Roddicks serve!

  • he's massive

  • alright so Monfils admits emulating Roddick's serve, but why criticize him, it's a great serve and it's fundamentally sound if more players really worked on their serve (motion and all) you might see more serves looking similar to Roddick's and also being more effective, so why criticize Monfils for doing it correct...unless the serve is too difficult so only a few can do it, but that seems a long shot to me:)

p.s. I am a Roddick, Monfils and Tsonga fan:)

  • yeah but Monfils serves with both feet really tight together while Roddick leaves plenty of space in between (which also causes him to plunge forward like you see in the video response, which is probably the reason why Monfils puts his feet tighter together). I love Monfils' eccentricities and I hope he becomes a great champ someday (he sure has the talent)

  • Besides why would he imitate Roddick's serve?

  • looks just like roddicks but more in control

  • his serve resembles roddick's.....

  • gael is best

  • hes show is 47,5....HUUUUGE foot

  • Thats Roddick's serve!

  • he serves like andy roddick

  • Gael and his friends used to try and model their serves exactly like Roddick's. I think he said it in an interview a while back. Roddick's does seem more natural in his movement though

  • lol show your proof dumbass

  • TOO BUSY!

  • lol trying hard NOOB

  • Dude, you seem pretty inmature to post a comment like that.

  • he serves like roddick

  • "oh yeah Ricky Butler says"

  • according to wikipedia, when they wer younger, monfils and tsonga would practice for hours to achieve a serve like roddick's..that's why the motion looks so similar

  • for those of you who are thumbing down comments that are pointing out the similarities between this serve and roddick's. tsonga and monfis on an interview said they tried to emulate roddick's serve when they were younger..

  • such a good player :)

  • pffffffft fuck off!

  • he serves like andy roddick

  • yes because he imitates it last time,

  • I can imitate Roddick's serve. I'm sure i'll use at my training!

  • Gael copied off of Andy!!!! lol

  • beast

  • Gonna see him play in january in adelaide!

  • His serve looks so much like Roddicks!

  • lol at people who say Monfils didn't rip the serve off Andy Roddick. Just in case yous don't know he never use to serve like that during the early junior days. It was only when Roddick came into scene that he started changing his motion. Roddick's serve is the best in the world, technique wise it is by far the best power transferring motion. Why not copy it? But it's not like Monfils will ever achieve a better ranking than Roddick ever did anyway.

  • He may have copied Roddick but Roddick didnt have that service motion when he was a junior either. He had a classic serve form with a traditional take back. And Roddick doesnt have the best serve in the world. The fastest but not nearly the best. He doesnt even serve the most aces per season with it.

  • Roddick 2008 Stats:

    Aces: 2nd place with 889.

    1st serve percentage: 3rd place with 68%

1st serve points won: 2nd place with 80%

Service game won: 1st place with 91%

All of these stats have been for many consequtive years now. He's always up there in top 3. His only let down have always been only his horrible footwork, baseline and volley game. How is his serve not "nearly the best"? Give me a break if you're taking account into the demented giant named Ivo Karlovic.

  • Damn i had no idea he won so many of his service games. But that isnt the point. Roddick's service game percentage includes his groundstrokes and overall game so that is not a good indication of how good his serve is. When i said not nearly the best, i was exaggerating because i really dont even remember writing that but i am sticking to my opinion that Roddick doesnt have the best serve because against good players, it usually doesnt have much of an effect.

  • Everybody have their own opinion it's ok :) I understand also what you are talking about. If you are to talk about against top players, right now at this moment I do think Djokovic have the best serve against them. He varies it EXTREMELY well. Very tricky, but second serve can be break down due to the risk he takes.

  • Roddick has the best serve technique wise and if he were 6-10 he'd prolly be serving 160mph +. You only have to look at his serve in slow motion to see this.

the aesthetic beauty of his serve is questionable but if I had to chose a present day serve as my own (not including height) it would definitely be Roddick's at no. 1.

PS. Goran would be my all time choice. 1000+ aces in a season in three different seasons!!!

  • Ivo's serve is definitely much more difficult to return..basically he's just serving from the top of a tower

  • his serves don't look like they have as much kick as roddick's tho

  • yes he copies but he copies so good...

  • Roddick has the most powerful serve ever, and it is far from a technically sound motion. There is nothing wrong with Monfils emulating a very successful motion, especially considering he is, much like Roddick, a very powerful player.

  • what about karlovic

  • Karlovic's serve is one of the best because his amazing height allows him to hit angles that other players can't hit. So jealous haha

  • ok you didnt have to tell me that, i was arguing one priser saying roddick has the most powerful serve ever....

  • lol how is it not technically sound?

  • Well, there is speculation that the motion could eventually cause shoulder injuries.

  • The KEYWORD there is speculation...

People speculated about this in '00 and '01 yet 7 years on not a single shoulder injury.

Roddick's serve has beautiful technique that utilizes his whole body and he is in no way more likely to contract an injury then any other big server.

Ivanisevic suffered from a debilitating shoulder injury yet I'm sure there was little to no speculation that this would happen.

Just shows how accurate unjustified speculation is...

  • Of course it is mere speculation, but many people were and are still of the opinion that it could eventually be a problem. It is not the smoothest motion, and he could well go his entire career without a significant shoulder injury. Roddick serves it the hardest, but if I were going to teach a motion, it would be Sampras or even Federer, not Roddick.

  • cha I wouldn't teach anyone to imitate a pro's motion... as long as the fundamentals are sound (which Roddick, Sampras etc. all have in common) they can do whatever motion they want. If they so happen to chose a motion that looks like roddick, while maintaining sound fundamentals (just like monfils has) then good on 'em.

  • @ davoho:

    +1

  • It is technically sound and very effective, it just doesn't look as fluent as federer's serve.

  • there wasnt an ace

  • such a big talent

    great player

  • haha who cares, none of these people can serve 135 mph bombs like gael, i think he knows what he's doing.

  • i don't get why people thinks he's a copycat.'caz Roddick became famous 1st becaz of this serve style? As u know, there's many way to hit serve and these 2 players happen to use same way. Besides, this is the newest and one of the most popular style these days. Why he has to be blamed...?

  • Thank you.

  • Some people are dumb as hell... I serve just like that and it's not because I want to be like Roddick. That's how I was trained by a tennis pro to serve. If anything, you go back into the past and watch Boris Becker's serve; when he was young... then you'd have to say Andy Roddick stole his serve from Boris; with just a slightly lower toss.

    Youtube Boris Becker!

  • i mean roddick has one of the best serves in the game right now so... why not and try to be the best?

    then again placement pwns power

  • oh and to get the boom he would need more leg bend, quicker service motion(lower ball toss), boss toss further infront and yeah~

  • roddick hits it more infront, monfils more towards 1 to 2 position, oh man if monfil serve exact same as roddick, his serve would be MASSIVE even more so then roddick, what gives roddick the massive speed is, the expolsivness of his service motion, here u see monfils just using the motion, but his not BOOM! exploding into the ball like roddick

and of coz its still big dont get me wrong, bigger then ill ever be able to hit, but yea

  • can't believe he copied roddick with that serve lol....

  • Wow the serve's movement is just like Roddicks.

  • monfils does like the exact same thing roddick does on his serve

  • i saw them comparing roddick's and monfils serve on a split screen and its exactly the same...except roddick bends his knees slightly more

  • I've had Roddick's serve for so long and i never saw any of these play before

  • if any of u have looked up this guy tsonga and monfils would practise hours on a court trying to get a serve like roddicks when they were younger

  • you probably just heard that when you watched the match on tv haha

  • yeah this fool's serve looks a lot like roddick's

  • that guy couldnt return gaels serve why would gael want to practice with him???

  • wat a gun he will be one to warch in the future

  • monfils is the gangsta of tennis

  • You mean... Practicing RODDICK'S serve...

  • haha yup, they really do look alike (it was especially apparent that day since Roddick was a couple courts away)

  • Lol nice. Can't blame him for stealing the serve. I have the same motion too. But I had it before I ever knew who roddick was!

  • this guy is crazy on the court!

  • awesome. monfils is my favorite. thanks for posting
