  • Is this from an actual Laputa VHS or a TV recording? I wasn't aware of the original English dub was officially released, with the exception of the Japanese DVD.

  • @xvm842 tv recording :) though iv managed to get it on blu-ray.

  • Isn't this dub on the Japanese laserdisc?

  • @Romusk86 its available in 720p if you look hard enough :) but youtube wont let me upload it :( it got banned worldwide instantly...

  • can some one send me a download link or something i want this film sooo bad but only the original voices PLEASE

  • Just Encoding the Blu-Ray version...

  • wow! ive been lookin for this for about 12 years now! it was only shown on TV here twice, once on Christmas Day in 1988 and again shortly after, and the only copy I had was on Betamax (which rotted). I got the subtitled Jap version and the Disney redub, but this is the one I remember from back then - especially the name (The Flying Island) and the scene where Muska shouts 'ROOTS!'

  • @Debbiebabe69 i was the same :) just thought id best upload it before my VHS breaks. "aaah these Roots!" Consider your search complete :) hopefully this will stay online forever now so everyone else who remembers it can find it :)

  • Can't say I like this dub. The American one seems to have so much more... spirit. In this dub it sounds like half the time the actors were just... not bothering to give it their best/taking it seriously at all. Though I must add the workmen at 7:40 did a fairly good voice job.

  • @Hirotoro4692 The problem with the older dub was that it was recorded at a very fast pace, and as such, nobody really had time to develop their characters, which is a shame, because many of them are good actors. Needless to say, hearing this older dub only made me like the Disney one more; that is to say, while not everyone is ideally cast, the VAs sound much more competent and better directed; this older dub doesn't really sound like a "superior" dub at all.

  • Haha. At 5:42 an advert popped up that read "SHOW OFF" in capital letters. Watch 5:42 and you will see the irony involved in such a coincidence.

  • Also the argument about removing the silent moments is pretty much nullified now, because they released a 2010 DVD edition without the extra music OR dialogue.

  • Disney didn't destroy this film, they just lengthened the score and fleshed out the characters, and the voices are not terrible in their dub, just different. Pazu DOES sound older, but everyone else sounded pretty much spot-on.

  • I cant really tell the difference between the cast, this voice actor and Mark Hamill for Muska kind of sound the same to me

  • @Alastarsblade , with the exception of Pazu, who sounds older in the disney dub

  • It was stupid of disney to even lengthen the music effects and remove the beauty of silence and still moments in the movie, laputa is a beautiful innocent movie, and they killed it with the stupid voices that they gave to those kids, perverted disney !!!!

  • @sorcerer187 you could argue that disney killed it, but Miyazaka enjoys their dub, and to be fair you could just watch it in JPN with subtitles if you want the purest, original experience.

  • @Hirotoro4692 I actually did watch it in japanese :), loved it, only the last bit where sheeta talks about why laputa fell was lost in translation, but otherwise so much better. I've been watching all ghibli in japanese only now,

  • amen., disney killed it.,

  • @sorcerer187 over-react.

  • Castle in the Skyじゃなくて、The flying Islandなんですね^^

    こっちの吹き替えが好きかなwww

  • You want a REAL trainwreck of a Miyazaki dub? WARRIORS OF THE WIND qualifies. But Disney's dub of this film? No way IMO. It has its faults, but IMO it's a good dub overall. To me this older dub sounds like a very stiff, poorly acted, second-rate production which, although "accurate", hasn't aged well at all compared even to Carl Macek's MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. Incidentally, Macek also thought this '80s dub of LAPUTA was below par, hence why he made TOTORO to show he could do it better.

  • I grew up with this version and its extremely hard to find. The only copy I have is recorded from the TV back in the 80's. far superior to the american wreck that they released after Spirited Away. Thanks uplaoder x

  • @gemgemgemgemgemify Finally; someone who agrees :)

  • @vegetarobertson, I consider this to be super rare. Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Steven Spielberg was the executive producer for the dub, and had it released under the Amblin Entertainment banner? I also wondered: What if Family Home Entertainment released the dub on home video in 1990?

  • Now Disney's dub does have its weak points: the extra dialogue, although funny at times, is a bit extraneous, the leads sound like teens, and the last part of Sheeta's speech is changed. But the dialogue sounds consistently smooth and believable and the VAs sound more lively. And frankly, I'd rather listen to that any day than this. And this is from someone who saw the Japanese version at least one time.

  • I have to disagree. The older dub may be more "faithful" than the Disney dub, but I found it to be shockingly bad. The scripting didn't sound very natural and the voices all sounded quite off, both in terms of vocal quality AND acting. They sounded very flat and emotionless, especially Muska—I thought Hamill did a much better job with the character. I even found the leads disappointing; they didn't sound either convincing nor natural. Sorry, but I think Disney's dub is the better of the two.

  • @vegetarobertson
