I find this particular scene so silly it's funny! I mean, it's a guy dressed as an ape bashing bones, it's too hard to explain. It's just kind of like...wot the???
The actual movie is ok though... ;)

This scene is far more than just an ape bashing bones. It's meant to illustrate our ancestors first discovering tools which could be used as weapons. When the ape finally throws the bone into the air we flash forward to the present where we're presented with a current weapon in space. From bones to space. Kubrick was a genuis.

P.S. you're right, Stanley Kubrick was a genius, ppl make jokes about him saying how he was always a little "Out of this world" In a way they were right...
