XMBC and Boxee are much better than the WMC for anyone who is interested in making one of these. If you notice the issues they have with web applications taking forever to load.
I so want a Home theater PC. I tried to configure the Dell XPS 8300 which they say is their ultimate multi-media PC, but if you want to use any of the ATI cards, you have to give up the Sound Blaster titainium card. Not cool. They should add 1 more PCIE slot.
@msbunnypaws it all comes down to what your media needs are. I have one, but I also have a expansive collection of digital movies and TV series. It is nice to watch them all on the TV while I use my other computer to play games and surf the internet. The case just looks nice on the entertainment center too, no one who comes over ever guesses that it is a computer.
OK I've built many a gaming rig but even I think this hardware is kind of overkill.
Wouldn't a home theater PC be fine with a cheapy Athlon ii x2 3 GHz, 4 gig of RAM and a cheapy Radeon HD 5670 in there? I mean, all you're gonna be doing is watching HD movies. You don't need a very good system for that. Heck go with a 6670 if it's cheap enough.
for a home theatre pc should i be looking at a lcd tv or lcd monitor for best video quality. I was looking in some lcd tv manuals and it says do not connect pc via hdmi and only use the pc input port which is only a blue vga port and lcd tvs don't have a dvi. Will a blue vga port mean poor picture quality. what will achieve the best movie quality between a dedicated bluray driver or a pc for playing films.
Go with the HDMI over VGA, digital always wins over analog.
Depends on your bluray player vs the PC's bluray reader. Honestly you probably wont be able to tell the difference.
LCD TV vs LCD Monitor? For quality the monitor will win, but didn't you say you wanted it for a home theater? Are you really going to sit on your couch and watch a 24" computer monitor? Get a TV... HDMI input.
To the people asking why so much hardware for an HTPC, it's Newegg. They sell hardware and want people to buy it. Why would they show the lowest cost setup when they want to sell you the contents? If people have the money I say go balls out.
Great Vid, Im Soon Starting My HTPC Build, But I need Ur Expert Opinions & Recommendations As I am Using a Massive Graphic's Card ( RADEON HD 6990), Do U Guys Know of any HTPC cases that is Compatible with This Graphics Card, I Know to house this Monstrous Card I Would Need a Big Case, Which is not really a Problem, Just as long as it is A HTPC Build with Remote etc... @ttham11223344 Yes I Wouldn't Mind, Just As long As its a HTPC Case That is Compatible with The High End Graphic;s Cards like The HD6990 etc, Thankx for ur reply
Ok, I'm not even 2 mins in and I can already see what I'm going to say at the end. Why do you need such a powerful PC for a home theater pc? 6 cores? 4 GB? 120 GB SSD? You could get by just fine with 1/2th of that or less.
@brandonbush1 The CPU I wouldn't agree with "now"< but this vid was put up in 2010. Now if it were an HTPC, I would use the AMD A8-3850 cpu, which has a radeon GPU built in. The idea behind the SSD, is silent super fast windows operation, with the regular high TB HD's set as PURELY storage, and that makes them swappable if need be, so you can switch them out based on what you have stored on them, movies, shows, etc. The ram? 4gb is around $25.00, not that high of cost.
@CatalystDestiny Yeah, I'll agree with most of that. I hadn't considered the noise aspect of wanting an SSD for reduced noise and having swappable HDDs. I have a 5 year old Core 2 Duo/2.4GHz/4GB DDR2/1TB machine that's about to become an HTPC and I know it will do just fine and cost a LOT less than this, especially if I were to buy those similar components today. This is more of a mid-high level HTPC build they're showing, and I was being a little more budget conscious I guess :)
@brandonbush1 Cost isn't really so bad. Not using an SSD saving money, with an A8 build, can easily do one with a hardware cost of $500 or so, I can spend more on a basic crappy home theater system with a basic bluray drive that can't do 1/10th of what the pc can do. The big thing about new hardware HTPC's is being able to do 100% of entertainment, AND 100% of pc capable things, on modern day hardware standards, including modern gaming if someone wants. Well worth the cost for what it can do.
Everything that everyone else mentioned...700 Watts, a hexacore, and a $300 case? There's a HEC/Compucase offering that has a case as good as this one with a built-in 300W power supply (more than sufficient to power this) for like 60 bucks. Even the RAM is overpriced.
i strongly reccomend to use a modular PSU, and at least 2 core the six core is not needed here...ohh and buy a good video card so u can see a high quality...
LMAO what? no way do you need all this for a HTPC.. a mid end dual core with a good GPU will play any Blu Ray/HD video you have, the 6 core cpu is NOT needed as the video playback relies on the gpu! overkill for a HTPC!
for a home theater pc you don't need top of the line parts. as long as it has a graphics card which supports 1080p for blu ray and a good hard drive space its a very good htpc
@willeyboy2 You don't even need a graphics card quite a few new motherboards have decent built in graphics. For example the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H has an integrated ATI Radeon HD 4250 which is easily good enough to play and stream 1080p.
@willeyboy2 You don't even need a graphics card quite a few newer motherboards have decent built in graphics. For example the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H has an integrated ATI Radeon HD 4250 which is easily good enough to play and stream 1080p.
you spend money on a ssd and the dont put in a decent video card?what about a tuner card that can accept a hd tuner card from the cable company /or multiple hd tuner cards?also the remote is crap and the case in low end,i though he said it had a lcd on the case at the begining, you should have a lcd on the remote and maybe 1 on the case too
@HeadouCompany Name Calling? Wow, okay I have 4 hard drives for my HTPC. Media Browser runs much faster on a SSD or using RamDrive if you have the extra RAM to spare. One drive? Even at 2TB for $80 or so, I have 1.35TB of video, audio and game images and currently have about 40-50GB left. If you don't keep anything then you can use one drive and smaller one. I'm considering building a Windows Home Server for archiving, so I can build a much smaller HTPC. No physical media = WIN
@HeadouCompany I did... Much of it is animation or auto racing and I enjoy watching stuff without commercial interruption. I also like to re-live some moments so I keep it around. I don't keep everything but for example I love Event Horizon or Heat, instead of renting it again at the Red Box, waiting for the movie channels to show it again, I just have it. I don't keep everything....
@MoonOvIce No its great for My Movies and Media Browser which has lots of background content like HD quality images which don't load that quickly from standard hard drives.
woh woh woh wait up a minute. 2tb hhd $69+ ps3 299.99 +$20 ext encloser = 368.99 owe and yes there is an internet browser. oh yeah mine plays games very well. he he
@ViennaMoose I spent about $400 including case but this was in 2007 and includes a HD4670 I added in late 2009. That is about to become a workstation for either a Ilano mATX or Zacate m-ITX build. SSD? Maybe...You can squeeze W7 onto 30GB SSD but not much else... 64MB is plenty though, still cheaper than 120GB which with rebate run about $150.
@TheJKeibler an HPTC doesnt need 6 cores. your current dual is suffice for you. Just save more money and when one day you need it get a performance PC. for playing videos and dvds any PC today is suffice really
Ok, I just got one of those Blue Ray drives iHBS-112. On the website it says that it is a blue ray burner. The dude in the video says it is just a BD player and a DVD burner. I hope he is wrong and not the website.
I cant help but notice that Matt obviously has a hard on for AMD processors. I know everyone has their preference but change it up a bit, go Intel for once
Cool Pc, but I think the 6 core CPU was a bit unnecessary for a home theater Pc. I would go with either a quad core @ 2.50 ghz or a dual core @ 3.20 ghz
This is seriously the biggest overkill for a HTPC I've ever seen. You only really need an Atom dual core cpu for that, and any graphics that can support 1080p and you're good.
Some of these parts are actually not so overkill. Running the OS from a 64gb SSD is a good idea. Fast boots and wake times...Have you ever tried booting and running windows from a full 5400 rpm hard drive? What if you are recording two HD video streams and watching a ripped blu ray at the same time?
Second, an Phenom II X6 is a great idea if backing up movies. Ever heard of Handbrake? Its multithreded and and X6 makes backing up your bluray collection and recoding TV much faster (hours less)
Gee how come windows booted so slow? You guys haven't a clue how to properly hook up a ssd.I suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing and are actually comfortable doing it.
for those who want a HTPC, Get a Athlon II X4, If you want to do some light gaming with it buy a lower end card, like a 5670, 4GB of RAM, A 32GB SSD (or you can buy an 80GB and pay a little more) along with however much Space you want. (I have 1TB internal, and 1TB NAS.)
Even an Athlon II X3 would be fine for this. If you are building an HTPC you wouldn't want to get anything more than a GTS 450 or 5770. I would suggest an SSD because it helps everything boot up so much faster :)
Wouldn't it be cheaper, easier, and maybe better to buy an onkyo, pioneer, or other HT reciever because they can work with real speakers like polk audio, and they have more inputs and decoders. Dont spend $300 on windows 7 and not even use the standard OS. And, are you going to show us how to hook up the volume? Though lots of people might already know how.
WTF? this shit is soo stupid.... way to try and rip us off Newegg! There is absolutely no need to sink more than $500 or $600 into a HTPC. More than that, is just really overkill and stupid!
the barracuda LP probably wasn't the best choice, the new samsung f4 has 667gb platters vs the 500gb ones in the seagate. fewer parts means more reliable, quieter, cheaper, and faster drive. Id also trade the six core cpu for a much cheaper triple core one and get a low profile 5750(or gts250) for better gaming and less money :P.
Seriously? 6 core cpu for an htpc? get a cheap amd dual, ram is fine, WTF SSD???, unnecessarily large case too... I would go mini itx. Video card is pointless as your mobo has integrated.
@creedrulz6000 Complete overkill... It's running Windows Media Center... Not rendering videos and playing games at max settings. A cheap dual core and a 400w PSU is more than sufficient for that and at 1/4 the price.
I lol'd at a 6 core HTPC with a 700W PSU with a 120GB SSD.
A cheap dual core with a 400w and a cheap HD is more than enough for a HTPC. As long as you're not using Atom or something you don't need GPU acceleration for video.
When building something like this, I think the main thing to think about is how quiet it will be. Choosing your PSU and CPU fan can be critical. I should have to hold my ear up to the unit to hear a faint whisper.
Hey newegg. Think about making a video on how to build a silent pc, from case, HDD's, PSU, Fans (or liquid cooling if need be). Silent High Performance. :)
what a horrible tour de force

why not buy a cheap computer and network ?
stinkykuntz 1 year ago
Cool Pc, but I think the 6 core CPU was a bit unnecessary for a home theater Pc. I would go with either a quad core @ 2.50 ghz or a dual core @ 3.20 ghz
hahaveryfun 1 year ago
That $300 case cost more than my entire HTPC.

Why no cable card tuner? Seems like that'd be mandatory if you still want to have cable tv coming into the thing.

Wow, a 6 core proc for a HTPC?! What a waste!!

Building this kind of PC would be good for someone like me, that doesn't have space for a traditional tower setup.

I LOVE at 6:12 he drops the screw down in the case, then scratches his head and grabs another screw!!!! good work though like the build.

ozzybot 1 year ago
This is seriously the biggest overkill for a HTPC I've ever seen. You only really need an Atom dual core cpu for that, and any graphics that can support 1080p and you're good.
dethtilldeath 1 year ago
My god, this would cream my desktop.
emomotorgeek 1 year ago
Some of these parts are actually not so overkill. Running the OS from a 64gb SSD is a good idea. Fast boots and wake times...Have you ever tried booting and running windows from a full 5400 rpm hard drive? What if you are recording two HD video streams and watching a ripped blu ray at the same time?
Second, an Phenom II X6 is a great idea if backing up movies. Ever heard of Handbrake? Its multithreded and and X6 makes backing up your bluray collection and recoding TV much faster (hours less)

why do you need a six core for a home theater pc?
ILOVEKATIE96 1 year ago
for those who want a HTPC, Get a Athlon II X4, If you want to do some light gaming with it buy a lower end card, like a 5670, 4GB of RAM, A 32GB SSD (or you can buy an 80GB and pay a little more) along with however much Space you want. (I have 1TB internal, and 1TB NAS.)
Even an Athlon II X3 would be fine for this. If you are building an HTPC you wouldn't want to get anything more than a GTS 450 or 5770. I would suggest an SSD because it helps everything boot up so much faster :)
ksidornseif 1 year ago
$1200 for a HTPC? Right... I am going to pay that type of premium for something I can also "browse the web" with?
I would rather buy the WD TV Live HD Plus for $120 and stream from my desktop PC.
I am sorry, but you guys look like you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about in these videos.

Who would pay all the money for that kind of hardware and still be using cable? lol
devan12100 1 year ago

Id also trade the six core cpu for a much cheaper triple core one and get a low profile 5750(or gts250) for better gaming and less money :P.
thebeetalls 1 year ago
Seriously? 6 core cpu for an htpc? get a cheap amd dual, ram is fine, WTF SSD???, unnecessarily large case too... I would go mini itx. Video card is pointless as your mobo has integrated.
tormaid42 1 year ago
I would have taken this in a different angle...
Athlon II X2 240e am3 45w
WD1002FAEX 1TB (ssd's don't belong in a htpc)
SS-400FL (+80 gold, no fans = epic win)
Graphic card is pointless for a htpc..
I would have stripped all the unnecessary startup programs & services, and the gui itself.
Next would have gone the bios flash screen, and the startup flag
My next htpc build will be purchased from newegg

A Six core CPU, 700w PSU and a SSD for a simple HTPC??? Seriously Newegg... For Reals?
UnluckyGaming 1 year ago
@UnluckyGaming why not?
creedrulz6000 1 year ago
@creedrulz6000 Complete overkill... It's running Windows Media Center... Not rendering videos and playing games at max settings. A cheap dual core and a 400w PSU is more than sufficient for that and at 1/4 the price.
UnluckyGaming 1 year ago
@UnluckyGaming
Which is why it has a junk ati card. If it was running games it would have a good gpu.

Microcip83 1 year ago
I lol'd at a 6 core HTPC with a 700W PSU with a 120GB SSD.
A cheap dual core with a 400w and a cheap HD is more than enough for a HTPC. As long as you're not using Atom or something you don't need GPU acceleration for video.

Its so funny that these guys work for newegg and dont know what the products are... how random.
devildogg311 1 year ago
When building something like this, I think the main thing to think about is how quiet it will be. Choosing your PSU and CPU fan can be critical. I should have to hold my ear up to the unit to hear a faint whisper.
Hey newegg. Think about making a video on how to build a silent pc, from case, HDD's, PSU, Fans (or liquid cooling if need be). Silent High Performance. :)
