I've watched Ruth Ann Swenson and Malin Hartelius do this same piece, but sadly neither of them can touch Valerie Masterson.....Masterson's performance was truly MASTERFUL!
What a gorgeous tone... the resonance!!! That's what I was looking for tonight.. was searching for a stirring performance of this monster aria. Wow!!! Pretty amazing. I've never heard of her. Thanks for posting.
Lyrics! Segenbelohne dich! (a couple of them are different, but not by much!)
I think its ok to like Masterson and Damrau. I challenge anyone who says that Masterson is undramatic here. She has basically a light lyric soprano voice, but with a ringing quality. The performance is live so i am happy to overlook the slightly sharp held high note- Callas had trouble with that one too- This is a great performance from a terrific artist.
I love how they have the white doves in the gilded cage and Valerie's Konstanza in a white gown. She is herself a beautiful dove locked up in the golden cage that was Pasha Selim's Harem in Turkey. Great production. Is this available on DVD somewhere ?
It's amazing to me that in the 80's she sang Konstanza and Marguerite in Faust, plus many other roles that might cause trouble for an older soprano. She was already experienced in operetta and opera with a career that spanned the 1960's and 1970's. I adore her Konstanza and this production looks great, period-perfect costumes and sets. Brava Valerie
Has anyone read the libretto? this is supposed to be dramatic, really dramatic, she's saying she would rather die. See Damrau singing this, away better
Val is my all time fav soprano. As a soprano myself i grew up on listening to her G&S recordings initially. She has a purity and ease which is beautiful. I adore this mozart aria and so pleased i can hear my idol singing it.
I disagree. I think Diana is one of the best in a very long time. I will admit though that she does a have a steely quality to her voice and is tonally a bit less smooth than masterson, but she is very powerful and effective both when she sings and acts.
Sorry to say but if you don't understand the difference between Damrau and her the shame are you!!!!!!!!!! Damrau is far better than her in diction (of course, she is German), in vocal tecnic, in acting!!!!!!!!!
No, I don't undertand YOUR beliefs. Differences are fine - not judgements. You know very well that I am not the only Masterson fan. You can not make up facts to support your ideas. Not SMART!
I am not too convinced... her diction is poor, she hardly gets a single word right... "Marter aller Arten" becomes "Maaraaaarte"... I agree that German is not the easiest tongue to sing in, but I have definitely heard non-natives do a much better job on this.
Now a days she is in the governing body of "British Youth Opera" as vice president and in the artistic committe. I also wonder if she knows her videos are here and if she has watched them. "Valerie, if you read this, send me a message" please, I adore you
Valerie Masterson is one of my favourite sopranos. I wonder if she's still teaching or retired? I can image her watching these videos and smiling about all those fabulous moments performing on stage. She's gorgeous and sings beautifully in this video.

This is the wonderful production, where Blonde had a blonde curly wig and granny glasses.
Osmin approached her and tried to seduce her.She told him "I am an Englishwoman" and to prove it she urolled her knitting.
She had been knitting a Union Jack!

In over 50 years of Opera going Valerie is one of the voices that still rings in my ears (for all the right reasons!).
I saw her in too many roles to list individually,BUT she was undoubtedly the best (Massenet) Manon I have ever seen.
