  • I bet the birds are going wtf is going on?

  • Good singing, bad acting.

  • Amadeus!!!

  • Certified Intergalactic! I've heard sopranos singing this aria, but no one beats Valerie Masterson. The best!

  • le type avec la cage est vraiment pénible, ne fait que de distraire pour rien.

  • I've watched Ruth Ann Swenson and Malin Hartelius do this same piece, but sadly neither of them can touch Valerie Masterson.....Masterson's performance was truly MASTERFUL!

  • @phenom1sama gagyi. hallgass gruberovát

  • I think he swallowed a whistle can not remove.

  • I think he swallowed a whistle you can not remove.

  • This is the wonderful production, where Blonde had a blonde curly wig and granny glasses.

Osmin approached her and tried to seduce her.She told him "I am an Englishwoman" and to prove it she urolled her knitting.

She had been knitting a Union Jack!

  • What a gorgeous tone... the resonance!!! That's what I was looking for tonight.. was searching for a stirring performance of this monster aria. Wow!!! Pretty amazing. I've never heard of her. Thanks for posting.

  • SHE'S GREAT!!! CONGRATULATIONS ms. Valerie MASTERson...her last name fits perfectly to her!!

    alexXx

  • I only wish I can understand this... but still I really do feel the emotion in this....

  • Excellent!!!

  • Obrigado. Isso foi enriquecedor.

  • I think its ok to like Masterson and Damrau. I challenge anyone who says that Masterson is undramatic here. She has basically a light lyric soprano voice, but with a ringing quality. The performance is live so i am happy to overlook the slightly sharp held high note- Callas had trouble with that one too- This is a great performance from a terrific artist.

  • Actuacion increible creo k mozart fue la k interpreto asi

  • Neither did i;How could i have ever have nown untill-you hear this-GRACE-

  • It's hard to believe but she was 43 when she did this. She looked about 28.

  • Certified Intergalactic! Valerie Masterson - the best Constanza!

  • In over 50 years of Opera going Valerie is one of the voices that still rings in my ears (for all the right reasons!).

I saw her in too many roles to list individually,BUT she was undoubtedly the best (Massenet) Manon I have ever seen.

  • I'm doing this opera for school. I;m Belmonte!

  • LISTEN TO MILIZA KORJUS

  • Superb singing of a fiendishly difficult aria. A beautifully dignified and convincing portrayal of Costanze. One of my favorite ladies too.

  • wooooo

  • woo

  • ausgezeichnet!

    merveilleux!

    magnifico!

    Simply wonderful!

  • I love how they have the white doves in the gilded cage and Valerie's Konstanza in a white gown. She is herself a beautiful dove locked up in the golden cage that was Pasha Selim's Harem in Turkey. Great production. Is this available on DVD somewhere ?

  • Yes, i know its in the Glyndenbourne Festival Opera Mozart box set, with 5 other Mozart operas.

  • It's amazing to me that in the 80's she sang Konstanza and Marguerite in Faust, plus many other roles that might cause trouble for an older soprano. She was already experienced in operetta and opera with a career that spanned the 1960's and 1970's. I adore her Konstanza and this production looks great, period-perfect costumes and sets. Brava Valerie

  • such a beutifull aria and beutifull soprano!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fastantic.

    Salutacions des de Sabadell,Barcelona.

    José Luis

  • Has anyone read the libretto? this is supposed to be dramatic, really dramatic, she's saying she would rather die. See Damrau singing this, away better

  • there are too many notes. :)

  • What do you mean, your Majesty, quarter or whole notes? :-)

  • @ufukulusoy

'There are a lot of notes but not one too many' - Wolfgang A Mozart.

  • @ufukulusoy yeah :-))

  • @ufukulusoy haha :) :D

  • @ufukulusoy i loved it tooo... which notes do you mean exactly?

  • @babajaga39 He's referring to the first performance of the opera, when the Austrian Emperor remarked that there were too many notes.

  • And the winner is...

    Valerie Masterson...

    Best Constanza

  • Yes, but it cuold be comfortable also for castratos timbre, do you agree?

  • Was the aria originally wrote for castratos?

  • It wasn't written for castrati.

  • Wow!!!!! Extremely good!!! the second version befor Callas's one...XD :)

  • Val is my all time fav soprano. As a soprano myself i grew up on listening to her G&S recordings initially. She has a purity and ease which is beautiful. I adore this mozart aria and so pleased i can hear my idol singing it.

  • Certified Intergalactic! Masterson -- the best Constanza!

  • And the winner is...

Valerie Masterson - Britain's Got Talent

The Best Operatic Scene for 'Martern Aller Arten' in living memory.

  • 3:19-3:59.

quite possibly some of the best opera ever.

  • Just .. woow!

Love her! This is amazing Ö

  • omg this is remarkable amazing!

  • WOW! What a wonderful singer! Truly a great singer, fantastic technique and good looks! BRAVA!

  • would listen to 5:15- 6:05 forever

strings at 5:37-5:44 are SO good

  • omg seriously!

i fell in love with that area after watching amadeus!

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • This is a very beautiful production, and Ms. Masterson is wonderful, even if I prefer her in Gilbert and Sullivan - or Handel.

  • Intergalactic voice! Precious video for generations to come. (Hands and feet clapping) :-)

  • I did not like Valerie Masterson at all, but after hearing this and seeing that she did it live gives me alot of respect for her.

  • Valerie rocks!

  • Truly England's most beautiful woman and singer.

  • See her in her prime in the Valerie Masterson The Mikado on YouTube.

  • I love her Mikado - her best G&S is in Yeoman. Here the music is the soprano's most difficult of all G&S's. Here, she truly shines!

  • Almighty voice! Great cinematography, audio! Worth remembering!

  • Diana Damrau ist die schonste Konstanze in der Welt!

  • Ja! Du hast recht !

  • Du auch!!!!

  • Why are you stating that on a video of Valerie? But now that you bring it up, Diana is far below Valerie. Das ist alles.

  • I disagree. I think Diana is one of the best in a very long time. I will admit though that she does a have a steely quality to her voice and is tonally a bit less smooth than masterson, but she is very powerful and effective both when she sings and acts.

  • She sure has a lot of high praise here for someone who has only one fan. I hope people don't judge you the easy way you seem to judge. SHAME!

  • Sorry to say but if you don't understand the difference between Damrau and her the shame are you!!!!!!!!!! Damrau is far better than her in diction (of course, she is German), in vocal tecnic, in acting!!!!!!!!!

  • No, I don't undertand YOUR beliefs. Differences are fine - not judgements. You know very well that I am not the only Masterson fan. You can not make up facts to support your ideas. Not SMART!

  • I can not UNDERTAND you XDDDDDDDDD

  • Then stop replying!

  • STOP!!!!

  • This is what I mean by "poor English".

  • I'm not English!!!!!!

    XDDDDDDDDDDD

If you want we can speak German or Italian...

  • That is just your opinion. YOU ARE NOT FACT!

  • I love Diana Damrau, too. She's my all-time favorite in everything she has done. That's no reason to disparage another amazing artist.

  • You are right...

    I'm sorry...

But when he told Diana was a bad Konstanze I get really angry!!!!

  • Das ist nicht rechtig. Sie is slecht.

  • Btw

Das ist nicht RICHTIG. Sie IST!!!!!

  • Bravo Masterson!! Bravo Gruberova!!

  • I am Diva, hear me roar

  • A very great , but so underrated singer. Forget Kiri, here was a really true talent.

  • A wonderful artist, a superb Violetta, Gilda, Cleopatra and a stunning interpreter of the romantic French operas such as Faust.

  • she has a nice voice, its really too bad the sustained high C around 5:15 is totally dead, and slightly sharp

  • Can you please post the other aria also?

    "ach ich liebte"

  • I am not too convinced... her diction is poor, she hardly gets a single word right... "Marter aller Arten" becomes "Maaraaaarte"... I agree that German is not the easiest tongue to sing in, but I have definitely heard non-natives do a much better job on this.

  • wunderschön!

  • She performs a wonderful interpretation of this aria. Such a lovely voice! I like her in "Da Tempeste" by Handel aswell (:

  • Wow, very expressive. She has a lovely instrument, and very beautiful interpretation.

  • awesome!

  • Magnifique interprétation de cet air redoutable par une des plus brillantes cantatrices britanniques de sa génération. Bravo madame Masterson

  • bejun:

Now a days she is in the governing body of "British Youth Opera" as vice president and in the artistic committe. I also wonder if she knows her videos are here and if she has watched them. "Valerie, if you read this, send me a message" please, I adore you

  • linhcba:

Valerie Masterson is one of my favourite sopranos. I wonder if she's still teaching or retired? I can image her watching these videos and smiling about all those fabulous moments performing on stage. She's gorgeous and sings beautifully in this video.

    escaelis:

XD She has a sublime voice that is so clear.

Only Natalie Dessay as Belleza (in Handel's Il trionfo) can compete
