the guy wanted to make "normal" music and he resigned himself to making that fake empty avant-garde crap only because it was hip and he wanted to make an impression. besides, the common place holocaust references and remixes make it more crappy
In Simon Shama's Discourse/documentary on the History of art (BBC) he mentions about Picasso's picture of war damaged Spain there's a great part where an SS officer asks him if the he did a picture on a postcard lying on the table, Picasso said "No you did, take it as a memento", now that's class! Could this be classed as Musique concrete?
I saw the U.S. premiere of "Daniel Variations." I thought the premise was moving, but I wasn't excited by the piece. There were four grand pianos and four vibraphones onstage, so the instruments were so LOUD LOUD LOUD the whole time, and I couldn't hear the vocalists except peripherally.
I'm not a big fan of Reich's later vocal pieces (except "Proverb") - they're almost too bloated and ponderous to my ear. His recent instrumental ensembles (such as "Sextet" and "City Life") seem more elegant.
That said, though, the "Double Sextet" that eighth blackbird premiered and toured last year might be a return to form. I've only heard short excerpts, but I like them very much.
Anyway, thanks a lot for posting this show, and best wishes! (Sorry for all the comments...)
Urrrghhh this is ridiculous and pathetic. The whole of part 5 has been removed due to a copyright claim by WMG on (at most) a 5 second clip of electric counterpoint. Il have to reupload it without that clip. Pathetic.
a number of his works have similar issues, there's a point at which his compositional style simply fails, and it seems to relate directly to the level of harmonic complexity. His simpler ideas work best, this work simply demonstrates a number of his weaknesses as a composer.
@roomclear You jinxed it! This show (the South Bank Show) was one of the only half-decent things on this channel (ITV) but they canned it last year to make more room for inane light entertainment!
Thank you for posting this excellent documentary on Reich; there's not nearly enough of him on Youtube. Thank you for exposing his brilliance to so many on here.
I remember seeing this on the south bank show and crying. Very moving tribute to Daniel Pearl. This is the first time i have heard it since then. thanks so much.. :o)
ill remember Daniel Pearl

Wait I'm confused, there is a "normal" kind of music? Btw music for 18 musicians isn't really talentless empty crap

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Didn't get a penny out of Youtube for my efforts mind.

It's shameful, it invalidates Reich's earlier work. Please stop now Steve!

what a strange orchestra. uses alot of 4's. What's significant about the number 4?

The applause turns into 'Clapping Music' at the end. Did this actually happen at the performance?
whatsthething 3 years ago
Its probably mixed in from the workshop at the beginning of the doc.
timegrinder 3 years ago
Yes, actually it did. :D
A group of people about four rows down from me started to get into it, and it caught on for a few seconds.
kennyd241 3 years ago
(The applause after the piece included some people playing Clapping Music; it was the end of the festival so some thought it as fitting tribute :^)
