  • go to my homepage to see his great grand son a fabulous looking colt

  • this story is about to start all over again

  • I sat on my bed and audio taped this. I used to play it over and over. I live near Pimlico, so I got to see his Preakness on the lead!

  • It's too bad Americans have never had the chance to listen to Venezuela's Aly Khan narrate a horse race. Look him up and listen to him in Spanish. I'm sure you'll get the feeling he was one of the best, if not the best, narrators in the history of horse racing even if you don't understand what he's saying.

  • @PhilistineTheArtLuvr I do not know for sure if it is Aly Khan making the call, but andreseloym has posted the 1971 Preakness (color) - look for "Cañonero II (Wins)Gana Preakness Stakes 1971". edenper has a very good version from Velenzuelan TV shown during an interview with jockey Gustavo Avila - look for "Gustavo Avila, Cañonero II, 2da carrera Triple Corona 1971". Mr. Avila is a cool character, but he can suppress a smile. Your right, I don't speak Spanish, but it is an exciting call.

  • Venezuelan proud. I think Canonero its the best horse ever in My country. Viva Canonero!!!!!

  • Viva Canonero !

  • What a shit call. Mid race sounds like he loses interest

  • @dunsta69 Odd because Chic Anderson was one of the 5 best ever...his Secretariat call was a bit better ...lol

  • @dunsta69 so right. poorly done.

  • my father was here

  • I was 10 when this ran; it was the first time I'd watched or even heard of the KD.

  • great video, thanks for posting.

  • I remember reading the handicapper's comment in the LA Times on Derby Day for Canonero II... "Room for improvement" and he had him last on his list. Ha ha! Well, he certainly did improve! And 1971 turned into another exciting Cinderella year :) Viva Canonero!

  • Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this. This horse was my childhood hero. It's the best story ever about any athlete.

  • how did you know canonero ?

  • I watched Canonero II race in the Triple Crown on TV and the story has stuck with me since.

  • But did you watch some documentary thing ?

  • No, live.

  • how was that, tell me more

  • I love Canonero II Story! Besides youtube/wikipedia, where can I find more about it?!!!

  • This is proof that a good horse can come from anywhere. Most people didn't even know who it was who hit the wire. They were perplexed.

  • Hello

Do you have photos of his grave ? Its difficult to find this stuff in the internet

  • AWESOME! This was my first Kentucky Derby I saw on TV when I was only 13 years old. I loved Canonero II! Thank you for posting the video, it brings back fond memories of Canonero II. Now, if we could only save Hialeah Race Track in Miami, Florida.

  • @kroyezmoi Mira, Maldita Mierda...

  • Mill Reef would have destroyed this field and won the Triple Crown easily. He was by far the best Anerican colt of his generation, but was sent to race in England.

  • Blah blah blah. Have you done anything else in the last 37 years, other than rude posts? No?

  • Many thought the horse and his connections were a bad joke. Well I guess he woke up those turdheads, beautiful, just, beautiful!

  • Many of us in Venezuela still believe that the U.S. mob might of had something to do with Cañonero's loss at Belmont. Maybe his infection was not casual. About Mr. Charles Anderson, I will post soon the Preakness with Ali Kahn in Spanish. Mr Anderson should learn a little on how to put emotion into his call. Could it be that they didn't like a foreign horse winning?

  • The horse's nationality didn't matter to Chic Anderson. He was a journalist first and not a showman like other announcers. It might have been the difficulty of indentifying a huge racing field (it tripped him up in the '75 Derby), and the Derby is the biggest of all. And when he was on the track PA, as opposed to his TV-only calls, he traditionally started his racecalls slow then warmed into it. But I agree it was an unusually laid back call from him.

  • Could it be that they didn't like the foreign horse winning? OF COURSE! Most folks root for their home country in an international event. World Cup, Wimbledon, US Open, Olympics - everyone tends to root for their homeland. Why so sensitive, I wonder...

  • Many people dont know that after loosing the Belmont, he defeated Riva Ridge. I quote this form the Wikipedia:

Sold to King Ranch, Hall of Fame trainer Buddy Hirsch nursed Canonero II back to health. The following year in the Stymie Handicap at Belmont Park, the horse put on the best performance of his career by setting a track record while defeating the great three-year-old champion, Riva Ridge.

    He retired winning¡¡¡

  • Cañonero II was always my favorite Derby winner. Thank you for the video, and chance experience this race again. I realize in the Belmont Stakes Cañonero had just prior suffered from a foot infection. Yet, it seems that he may not have had enough gas for such a long race to be a serious triple crown winner. Any experts have a thought on the his long distance Belmont run?

  • What more do you know about C II ?!! TEll me!

  • CAÑONERO II (1968-1981),

    Sire: Pretendre

    Grandsire: Doutelle

    Dam: Dixieland II

    Damsire: Nantallah

After win the Kentucky Derby (in his birth place,

in the Preakness Stakes, the second of the Triple Crown races, Cañonero II put an end to any doubts about his greatness by winning the race and setting a new track-record time in the process.

  • The Master Gustavo Avila rode Cañonero to its victory. Cañonero was trained by Domingo Noger Mora. He was famous for his "Flota Inglesa" or The Inglish Fleet. Cañonero was "importado en vientre" or imported in the womb to Venezuela. Gustavo Avila also won El Clasico del Caribe with Victorioso.

  • Cumanagoto, Cañonero was trained by Juan Arias

  • Who was the caller? His announcing is so unexciting...but the race is good!

  • The legendary Charles David "Chic" Anderson of the famed 'he's moving like a tremendous machine' comment on Big Red. I agreed it was a bit lukewarm; Canonero II's win was so unexpected it dumbstruck everyone.

  • An unusual laid-back call by the usually peppy Anderson. Compare it to his 1969 (Majestic Prince) Derby, which he called for both Churchill Downs and CBS Sports -- that's more like the classic Anderson.

  • Reading about what Canonero II went through to physically get to the Derby and even his preparation days before - wow - his effort is that much more remarkable. While born in the Kentucky, he still the only horse shipped in from overseas to win the Derby.

  • I remember this like it was yesterday! Thanks for posting. Awesome horse, awesome race.

  • cool
