A good way to scuff the sole of a shoe is to use 240 grit sandpaper. You might be able to use a coarser grit (smaller grit number like 120), but don't use a finer grit like 400 because it doesn't remove enough material to make a difference. This works for men's shoes, also, which is what I had to do to a pair of men's dress shoes to make 'em safer to walk in.
