I've listened to all the greats singing this and Carreras is just the best - stop whingeing about the half step lower and listen to the passion and the tenderness which he imparts - you don't need the pictures, the voice does it all.
it is enchanting, how Mimi looks at Rodolfo here. with love. and it doesnt matter how much she weighed:-) or how much she didnt. and in his voice you hear all the emotions so clearly. he neednt use anything to act the part, his voice is so powerful.there is much more to a tenor than his c´s.
Carreras wrote in his book that every time he appeared on stage with Caballe he "fell in love with her all over again". Love hearing this, but his Rodolfo with Stratas two years later was a real triumph of passion and artistry. They were magnificent together!
Who needs the high C when you can sing like this guy? I love the completely entranced looked on Ms. Cabelle's face while he's singing...like she's just mesmerized. Carreras' version of this always brings tears to my eyes, it's so ardent and beautiful.
As beautiful as this version is though, I actually like the version with Stratas 2 years later even better, his voice is a little darker and richer. The look on Cabelle's face while he sings here is priceless!
Wow, are we twins or what?? 110% do I agree. In fact the very 1st VHS of classical music I ever bought was this Met .Opera 1982 version with Stratus. I once said Stratas is the only singer of the time one could actually believe to have tuberculosis........ The BEST (in my opinion of course) Traviata is the Stratas/Domingo Zeffirelli FILM. Again Stratas was a believable consumptive. She's a good actress. Zeffirelli is great director. Germant was reeeally good. Stratas sang well in that film.
Not really bothered by the half step lower. I'd rather listen to his rendition of this aria any day. He actually tells the story with his voice. Unlike many others who do sing it in key. So tender and such musicianship heard in his rendition. Unlike no other.
I often find Pavarotti's voice piercing. So I understand personal processing of sound in your own ears. What I hear in Carreras is emotion, tears in his voice.
I think it beautiful. HOWEVER if you like a GREAT high C from one of the most wonderful tenors I've ever heard - Try Jerry Hadley - American Tenor. The best posting is from moh672 posted November 19, 2007. Sadly he took his own life just months earlier. Depression can and does kill.
I don't think he's the only one among classic singer who has transposed an aria. Anyway I prefer without ant doubt a tenor without an high C than a tenor ho is technically pure and cold but nothing else. Bravo Carreras, W your B!
what i hate most about carreras is that he transposes arias with higher registers a half step lower... but what i like about him is that he is a pure musician in terms of acting, words, stress and tenderness in his lines, the nuances and everything.. its so great to watch him.. but with this aria i cant help but hate him for transposing it a half step lower.. but great musicianship here..
Carreras was the most romantic out of all the three tenors to sing Che Gelida Manina. When I listen to him sing this aria, I enjoy every word and note.
Carerra's quality is beautiful here, but as he enters the passaggio or higher the voice has a wow or wobble to it and the high note isstrained but ok

If it would be prohibited to perform tenor repertoire transposing down the material...
Then, I bet you, the Domingo's Carreras, etc, will tune their techniques a notch up, and nail them C's.
Otherwise, they just get comfortable and loom around the B's....

All I can say is "I wouldn't throw him out of bed fer eatin' crackers." To those who
don't understand this American idiom,
it means "I would happily share a bed with this magnificent tenor." Oh and he
doesn't even have to sing - ha ha ha.

Yes - Teresa Stratas was amazing as Mimi in La Boheme, such a believable performance!

nadie canta el che gelida manina como Carreras para mi es la mejor interpretacion que un tenor puede hacer de ese fragmento de la boheme

He's a great singer...but I've always found his voice to be rather harsh. But a beautiful voice nonetheless.

Is an impression or he seemed a bit plump in 1980? anyway he's always so tender, so emotional, even if he had put on weight. Bravo!

¡Saludos!
