YES you're alone. His staccato play his wonderful and is like an doubtful onlooking elf jumping around this crying stream of the guitar : so complementary !
Moreover, I find it really similar to Alain Caron style, a french bass player !
@kalisteboat I just feel, this is a guitar solo and shouldn't be an opportunity for the bass player to be playing and acting in such an attention drawing way, I'm not debating against his playing ability nor the sounds he's creating i just feel in the context of a guitar solo thee bassist should know his place.
@mynameisnickherpderp in what way? he doesn´t enter the high register even once.....no slaps or pops....i think he is doing an excellent job keeping a fantastic and tight groove with setting the stage for Steve....
Five Stars to the drummer and his fine way to play this solo. Simply Awesome. Also 5 stars to Steve and the Strat's beautiful sound. Hitting the guitar at the beginning to create the rhythm is a very creative way to start this solo. Bass player also did a grat job, see it al 1:01!!! I wish I were there....
@gonzataker I think all of us can agree that Steve is the Best Guitarist of all time, Jimi Hendrix has a beautiful story and all but Steves skills hit you hard.
Great... But still, so less soul than in the SEBTP version. Not only because of the solo, but mainly because of the background music. For me, at least.
Robert Fripp was asked to take Steve Hackett's place in the GENESIS when he left... but he turned the offer down. Pity... He would be THE ONLY proper replacement and the music of the band would have taken an interesting turn... at least as long as he stayed with them...
When Peter Gabriel left GENESIS it was still very much the band we knew, for a while... until Steve decided to leave also... After that, at least as far as i'm concerned, it was... kiss your ass goodbye !
damn thats a nice sustainer then. i had a little jackson shredstick with a sustainiac pickup and it could never sound like this stuff...it put out super-gnarly feedback but not smooth butter sustain. these days a nice semi-hollowbody + MXR compressor gives me as much sustain as ill ever need!
@greeeenmachine sounds cool. Fernandez sell the sustainer as 'kits' that they claim will fit 'most guitars'. That's bollocks, I got one and took it down to my local music guitar tech guy and virtually every guitar i took with me he said, no way, as he would have to channel out too much wood from the body to pack it in. I ended up getting a Fernandez Revolver Elite with the sustainer built in. Have to say, it's an awesome guitar.
ARME et AME MAITRESSES de GENESIS, Debout (maintenant), Géant de l'Emotion, du Son Pur au Son Trafiqué, tu as su, sans tapage, et tu es un des meilleur ambassadeur de la Guitare. Nice melodic lines but lacking serious soul. Very sterile sounding. Imagine if the exact same solo was played by David Gilmour. 'Nough said. Sounds like the guy went to Berklee college of music. Steve Hackett is a soulless bore. I saw him last night live. How anyone could idolize this guy is beyond me.
@MrMightyslim well I suppose it also depends on the mood you're in at the time. But saying that it did kinda sound a bit boring, kinda like an outro to an opeth song or something.
@MrMightyslim The comparison is absurd. God knows Gilmour is my favourite guitar player and main influence, but let me tell you that nobody could even dream to play this song like Hackett does. Seriously, with all my respect: if you don't find soul in this song, especially in the solo...well, it's your opinion, but I'm pretty sure that all of us don't share it!!!
If it is a Gibson, it certainly is a highly modified one. The Bridge and Tremolo are aftermarket, the placement of switches is different, the pickup covers are gone and probably has different pickups. So what you are hearing is absolutely maybe the wood from a Gibson.
@DarthKazi - Really? I agree that the Gibson name means about as much as "sworn" does in law enforcement, but back in the day my Les Paul was my world. I had Steve scratch his name in the back of my black Les Paul Custom (in the parking lot of Tower Records on Sunset). At first he said No, and then he was very very hesitant, and it barely went through the varnish. Looking back now it seems he had more respect for my guitar than I did... So, who built Steve's guitar?
@ReverbAndBeer Hell, I don't know who built it. I know Gibson will farm out guitars for artists and put their sticker on their headstock, just like Fender occasionally uses Warmoth parts for custom guitars or has a "shadow builder" make them. That's not news. Rich rockers can afford anything and the big Corporate makers will do whatever it takes to make the artist happy and, at the same time, fool the customer into thinking it was built in the same factory as their overprice POS...
@DarthKazi Lol, it's a Fernandes Sustainer with a few custom bits on it. Steve uses Les Pauls but he can't get the sustainer to work aswell in them. He currently uses a RLC80-s Les Paul Burny
@DarthKazi there is a really good recent video interview with SH on licklibrary. He states that that is in fact a '52 Gibson Gold Top which was his main guitar of choice with Genesis and the black one he uses more nowadays is a Fernandes Les Paul copy with built in sustainer, he gives a demo in the interview
@DarthKazi You are completely AND CERTAINLY 100% wrong about Les Paul's - I play a Start a lot too but my LP plays like butter & screams from time to time.
Checkout it's tone on my video tribute to Les "This Song's For You".
Love You Steve. Youre the only member of Genesis I had the chance to meet personally, and you will remain an icon to me. I believe that Genesis will always miss you cause you were part of that Genesis sound never recreated equally after. The band died when you left.
I have always felt that Steve's contribution to the early Genesis sound was enormous but that he has evolved and thrived as a solo artist from day one. He would not have done so remaining in the band with the direction they took. He made the right move, and--look whose still turning out great music!
