Mel Blanc did voice the Frito Bandito. I remember some of these. Others were before I was born. I still love the Pepsi commercial. I also like the fact the commercials were shorter back then but still managed to get their point across.
Dinah Shore's NBC-TV shows (15 minute and hour-long editions) were sponsored by Chevrolet from 1951 through '61, and she was their "star salesman" during that period. The Halo jingle was written for Colgate-Palmolive-Peet by Joe Rines in 1946, and initially featured on their radio shows...
OK turkey ! This is from an "old fart", who came to the US of A in '57. Where are the good old "Hey get your cold beer, hey, get your Ballantine!" - "For the first time in your life feel really clean, get that ZEST glow from head to toe" - "Mildness(4X)makes the difference, smoke Tarryton(4)...etc." Double your flavor, double your fun with Doublemint (3)gum"
Man oh man oh man...does this bring back memories! It's amazing how some commercials back then had such big production numbers. Thanks very much for posting this!

@rayofmoonshine I was thinking more "Speedy Gonzales," but I guess after all the time we spent hearing his voice, we'd recognize it almost anywhere! LOL! From Bugs Bunny to Mr. Spacely to who knows what, he was the voice we heard.
@rayofmoonshine It's a relatively little known fact that Mel Blanc didn't do ALL the WB voices. but that's the deal his manager worked out back in the 30s as far as the credits in every cartoon. Elmer Fudd was somebody completely different.

@chuckiesjamochashake My mom would like to see the old acne pimple commercial. I think it has a jingle that says: I'm an acne pimple as lonely as can be, hey fellow pimple, I'll keep you company.
Excellent job! Some comments. The "Halo" TV spot song was originally "Hello, Everybody" sung by duo Billy Jones and Ernie Hare. Dina Shore had polio that affected one of her legs. In her TV show she didn't disguise it. Yes it was Mel Blanc singing the Frito Bandito song. The Chicano folks didn't like it later had it banned. These songs were recorded back in the great old days of analog mono sound with a top high end of about 5 Khz. And with a lot of compression. But EVERYTHING can be heard!!!
there is an old winston commercial I remember but cannot find anywhere. After they changed the slogan to "What do you want, good grammar or good taste?" It's a bunch of secretaries terrorizing their slave driver boss. If anyone has seen it let me know I only remember seeing it a couple of times when I was around 7 or 8. thanx!
@ScotAbenaki In the mid-to-late 1960s they did a whole series of those "Good Grammar or Good Taste" Winston ads in different settings. I remember one in particular with a bunch of farm hands and a cute farm girl singing the jingle (one of the farmhands was James Hampton, who played Dobbs the bugler on "F-Troop" as well as Caretaker in the original version of "The Longest Yard").
@clovis57 I don't know if it's posted here, but I could swear Barry Manilow did the vocal for "Tijuana Smalls" cigarillos. I always loved that jingle.

Made it all the way through, I'd give you five stars if I could :)
Does anyone know if the male voice in "Mr Clean' had something done to it? Or was it just normally sung and it's just a different quality. If so, does anyone know how to replicate this effect?
@hypnotisedpenguin I got the audio from a recording somewhere on the internet. I think it may have come from a record of jingles or something. I have no clue where on the internet I found the recording. I replaced the original commercial's audio with it. I think I did some additional audio editing using audacity; but I have no idea what that may have entailed. BTW, for whomever is interested; the Texaco commercial has the video from one source and the audio from another; also edited.
@hypnotisedpenguin If it means anything to you, I've heard that the guy singing the Mr. Clean jingle is 1950s pop singer Don Cherry, whose children are Eagle Eye Cherry and Neneh Cherry. The audio from that ad is probably from the CD "Television's Greatest Hits - The Commercials". The actual original commercial is here on YouTube at various places.
@hypnotisedpenguin Slight error in my mentioning that Don Cherry's kids are Eagle Eye Cherry and Neneh Cherry - their dad is Don Cherry the JAZZ musician, not Don Cherry the pop singer (who had a hit in 1955 with "Band of Gold"). However, the singer Don Cherry IS the guy singing the Mr. Clean jingle.
Love this compilation. I remember most of these ads from my childhood and later, and it was with great fondness I watched them again. Briefly I was young again and so was the world. Thanks for posting.
O the ""GOOD OLE DAYS"" if only 2 relive them all again!!!! Makes 1 wanna cry cause the good times that we once knew are gone, the family & friends that we had back then are gone, all thats left are the memories of yestur year!!!! I was born in the early 60's & remember most of these commercials!! Thank you CHUCKIESJAMOCHASHAKE for posting this video!! You did a great job......brought even some tears 2 my eyes!!
So Great! I teach a music appreciation class and one of our writing exercises is to write a jingle. This video is now part of my lesson plan. Thanks so much!
What is the best application to edit this - to remove the color credits at the start and the message at the end that spoil the video and are unnecessary (credits and messages are better placed to the right)?
@Meatpies62 This guy has a holier than thou attitude. Who is he to tell anyone what is or isn't necessary in THEIR video. His comment deserves that response.
@chuckiesjamochashake What I should have said was that the comment was rude, so I mis-spoke, and I was out of place in calling you rude on your own channel. My apologies.
@nevaeh1489 I doubt that. But even if true those are remakes and not the originals which were dangerously sharp on the ends. Your turn to say "Were not!" LOL Kindergaten Redux
@ShastaPacificRoad This is not just a video of commmercials. I'm was trying to show how a jingle can get in people's heads with their repetitiveness. Also it sets up a little joke when the record gets broken at the end. This is what people like yourself may have been feeling like doing with all the Halo bits. I don't like having to explain this, but some people aren't getting it. I'm glad you like most of the choices. Thanks for leaving a comment.
@ShastaPacificRoad Already have enough stuff running around in my head now! LOL! You're right tho, about jingles sticking in your mind. Their uniqueness, subject and frequency of airing often bear heavily upon remembering them. It can also be overkill and breed resentment agin' a product/service. A pertinent example might be the Geico commercials that seem to be saturating AM and FM radio here in the Midwest....... IMHO, some of the ads need to brought back. Think the companies might be
@ShastaPacificRoad missing a bet by not 'cashing in' on the Retro aspect. Who knows, they just might surprize themselves with good sales!!!???? Certainly a lot of the current ads are nothing more than a re-hash of earlier ads. Keep up the good work!
Love this momentary return to a time when life was simple despite the war protests. I don't remember the Halo commercials, but do all the rest. Made me think of some others... How about Viceroy cigarettes, "I'd rather fight than switch." And "Brylcreem, little dab'll do ya!" Thanks so much for the memories. (But that's a different show. LOL) Commercials today just don't measure up.
@HuskerGram Not to nitpick, but that was Tareyton cigarettes that had "I'd rather fight than switch" as their catchphrase. But you're right - today's commercials are not as memorable as yesterday's. Will any of us remember the Geico gecko for as long as we've remembered the Jolly Green Giant, Josephine the Plumber, Mr. Whipple or the Little Old Winemaker? Or the Ajax White Knight, or Mrs. Olson, or . . . etc, etc.
@elc1960 Wow! You're right, it was Tareyton. And that made me think of Eydie Gorme in the cigar commercials. Commercials back then were memorable because they were good (catchy jingle, etc.) Now they're memorable because of how awful they are. "Wheeeee Whee Whee Wheeeeeeeeeee." That one should be banned. lol
@HuskerGram Oh oh . . . that was Edie Adams (Ernie Kovacs' wife) in the Muriel cigar ads . . . sorry, that little old nitpicker, me . . . (See what I mean? You can't get those catchphrases out of your head.)
I wonder what Dinah would think of Sirius sattelite radio and GPS systems IN Your Chevrolet's now? I don't remember any of the jingles from the 60s. Sorry but I can't STAND Ethel Merman, I had to mute her sea lion voice. Now I really have no memories of cigarette commercials. I can remember the Pepsi commercial a little bit
Well, these sure beat the "Midwest Hemroid Treatment Center" jingles we get these days...

Does anyone know if the male voice in "Mr Clean' had something done to it? Or was it just normally sung and it's just a different quality. If so, does anyone know how to replicate this effect?
It's my favourite jingle, BTW. 5/5 video.
hypnotisedpenguin 1 year ago

@elc1960 Ah that is fascinating I will inquire about that. Thank you very much.
I'm sure I could try and make a microphone give shit quality speaking ha.

His comment deserves that response.
chuckiesjamochashake 1 year ago
@chuckiesjamochashake What I should have said was that the comment was rude, so I mis-spoke, and I was out of place in calling you rude on your own channel. My apologies.

@nevaeh1489 I doubt that. But even if true those are remakes and not the originals which were dangerously sharp on the ends. Your turn to say "Were not!" LOL Kindergaten Redux

I was a teenager in the 1970's and at university in the 1980's so the beauty ads of that time period brings me back to my youth.

Thanks for leaving a comment.
chuckiesjamochashake 1 year ago

HuskerGram 1 year ago
@HuskerGram Not to nitpick, but that was Tareyton cigarettes that had "I'd rather fight than switch" as their catchphrase. But you're right - today's commercials are not as memorable as yesterday's. Will any of us remember the Geico gecko for as long as we've remembered the Jolly Green Giant, Josephine the Plumber, Mr. Whipple or the Little Old Winemaker? Or the Ajax White Knight, or Mrs. Olson, or . . . etc, etc.
elc1960 1 year ago
@elc1960 Wow! You're right, it was Tareyton. And that made me think of Eydie Gorme in the cigar commercials. Commercials back then were memorable because they were good (catchy jingle, etc.) Now they're memorable because of how awful they are. "Wheeeee Whee Whee Wheeeeeeeeeee." That one should be banned. lol
HuskerGram 1 year ago
@HuskerGram Oh oh . . . that was Edie Adams (Ernie Kovacs' wife) in the Muriel cigar ads . . . sorry, that little old nitpicker, me . . . (See what I mean? You can't get those catchphrases out of your head.)
elc1960 1 year ago
@elc1960 Yes, I tried to correct it but my post ended up below a couple of posts before ours. {blush}
