  • yer i grow up on skippy i even went there as at 10yr old on a skool bus trip i think thay should ten it into a TREE TOP ADVENTURE PARK and cafe like here in minmi were i live :) trust me this is the way to save waratah national park :)

  • bring back skippy ......

  • I remember watching "Skippy" after school when I was around 8 or 9. The program was shown on a local T.V. station here in New York City. About ten years ago I was working in the Austrailian Consulates Office in Manhattan and began singing the theme song to the program. Needless to say I was surrounded by almost the entire office staff. They applauded when I was done. I then broke into "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" and the whole place went wild. Think the Consulate was out of town that day.

  • Skippy's on the toilet paper Bro.

  • they should remake skippy for todays children its a lot better than some of the crap they are passing of as childrens programs today.

  • skippy the bush kangaro was the most fav program of my youth days and still to this day i have a betamax video recording from 1967 of the program but wish i had a betamax to play it on still i know even if all else fails fingers crossed that will never happen i will always have this to remind me of a program that brought joy and fullfillment to me (priceless)

  • I'm glad it is now Saved, it can be a great attraction. Thank you.

  • i went to Waratah Park with my school in 1981...back then it was opened to the public...and i loved it...i would love to go again...i hope with all my heart that this wonderful place can be restored to its original 1960s spleandour and returned to us again :-)

  • @AllAboutLOVEatYuToob i remember going there twice as a kid, and it may have been in the 70's. I remember a train and seeing the actual Ranger HQ and helicopter was something special.

    I don't really remember seeing Skippy..lol

In a way it's amazing this building sits there ignored for so many years, hopefully good things will start to happen there, and thats well overdue

  • @leokimvideo

I hope so too my friend :-)

  • I remember watching this show as a child, I hope they can preserve the park and make it an attraction

  • I remember watching the show in the late 60's...was curious as to what happened with the characters and animals. Would love to see the reruns on Nick@Night

  • YAY! SKIPPY IS SAVED!

  • Thank you to all who have signed the petition. Stage one has been won.

There will be no sale or development on Waratah Park By Prudentia. !!

  • @QueenBeatlesWings Wow, that's a relief to know, what is the status of the park now?

  • @leokimvideo In 2003, Waratah Park was taken over by Earth Sanctuaries Limited who restore native wildlife habitats. Its future was bright as the first native earth sanctuary in Sydney that focused on the promotion and protection of Australian native flora and fauna. Sadly the parent company of Waratah Park failed, so the Govt transfered Waratah Park to a property development group. the park was closed all animals removed in August '09. Nothing has been decided yet, but it wont be deeloped

  • @QueenBeatlesWings thanks for the update, i can see via nearmap ( updated mapping web utility) the development next door to Skippy park seems to have frozen in time. I can't see any development there since I was there 2 years ago. The latest aerial map I see is Sept 2011

I also still see the large trees hard up against the rear of the Rangers HQ, and that to me is something which needs to be addressed.

  • like wow i have been to this park like 35 yr ago on u bus trip from newcastel with my mum lol we spent u day there :)

  • Absolutely loved watching this show with my now 12 y.o. son. He was about 2-5 & it was a complete hit in our house. Brung back skippy! Preserve the sanctuary that was the park in the show. You know... The one that starts with "W". (I'll never spell it right so I'm not even going to humiliate myself with trying! Thx for the memories.

  • Penny heads Waratah Park Nature Reserve Foundation - go check the site for the latest on its future and what you can do to help!

  • The latest on the site can be found in the news section of the Waratah Park Nature Reserve Foundation

  • Thanks for posting. This is a nice memory and I hope the park is being saved.

  • Channel Nine just played an episode of Skippy just then. Shame it's on at 01:30am but it was still nice to catch an old episode again. Brought back some old memories of when it use to be on in the afternoons after school!

  • Please help save Skip's Home. emal us infoatwaratapark. org. au

  • Help save Skip's home!

  • awesome! good to see the set has not been trashed by vandals!! this needs to be saved NOW!

i would love to see this, i watched skip in the late 70's/early 80's as a youngster (i guess then it would of been repeats too!)

  • thats awfull skippy is my favorate show yes they should restore skippys home it is a keep sake,,,they dont make good family shows anymore like skippy,,,,

  • Skippy once defused a nuclear bomb...a truly amazing animal !!!!

  • Hi Leo, What a blast from the past. I didn't know the set was still around. It's been a couple of years since you put this on. How's the progress of save the ranger HQ going? Skippy fan forever! Real Aussie film production. I'm 46 and grew up with this tv show, in b+w.

  • @pjmjk I bet there were many around hoping this part of Australian history would just slip away. Funny how once something is out of the spotlight for a time it just vanishes. I was to do a follow up video but unfortunately real world work has completely taken over my life, and I don't play the tube slave game.

  • Ed Devereaux died in December 2003 aged 78

  • I met Ed Devereaux in 1969 or 1970 - we were on a cruise ship with him and his family to Europe and spent a month together. He was a charming gentleman. He was taking the family back to England. I can remember being in Germany watching Skippy in German. I commend your efforts and will sign your petition.

  • Man, sometimes I wish I was a 60's Kid....

(sniff) They had such classic auzzie entertainment for kids!

  • Good day skippy, well I know you are alive and well in the outback somewhere - a great kids programme nothing like the drivell made up today - hope you manage to save the park - when is the comeback series start then? and if anyone says you are a wallaby then just tell them they are wrong! cheers skip! see you again soon.

  • @66johnpaul

THIS WARATAH PARK SHOULD CONTINUE TO THE PUBLIC, IT IS GREAT PLACE TO THE OUR NATIVE AUSTRALIAN ANIMAL LIKE EXAMPLE KANGANROO AND KAOLA ETC.

    CHEER

    SYDNEY

  • i remember skippy .mayby if u got the actors who were in it 2 help ,they mite hilight it

  • I grew up with the TV series Skippy in Nigeria,West Africa in the late 60's and early 70's.Great series and brings back sweet childhood memories.I was remembering the song when I visited the campaigner's YouTube site to watch and listen to the Skippy tune again.I think these investors who want to destroy Skippy's sanctuary has made a big mistake.

  • I was here, thanks to my cousin's husband, when I was living in Australia, in St Ives, northern suburbs of Sydney! We got permission, somehow, when I pestered them enough to do it to prove that the show existed, as they did not know coming from Italy, originally. I was right, though and we drove through this pace thanks to Stephen and his friends at Westfield. Loved the show although I was 2 when it came out. Good on ya!

  • I'm very sorry to hear of the death of John McCallum, the creator of this wonderful TV series, who passed away this morning (Wed. 3 Feb. 2010) in a Sydney nursing home age 91. He brought much joy to all the children whose life was brightened by the series which was yet another iconic Australian TV production. My condolences to all his family and friends.

  • a national treasure , an icon to the children of the 1960's , skippy WAS Australia, bet there are tens of thousands maybe hundreds of thousands who emigrated to oz because of skippy

  • i remember that show from when i was little, is skippy still alive?

  • @hayleyluvs2shuffle I don't really know... It's been 40 years now. I don't know if she is still alive. But I do know for sure that Ed Devereaux AKA Mr. Hammond died in his early 70's...

  • Good on you for producing this informative video. Long live Waratah Park.

  • I remember watching Skippy as a kid in Canada, I hope the sight is preserved.........

  • I would LOVE to visit the Rangers Headquarters, can you please tell me how I can get there? Where exactly is the set located? thanks

  • i found this sooooooooooooooo sad. i loved the show. used to watch it when i was a kid on our black and white telly.

  • I am about to do a update to this video, some very interesting info has been sent to me related to this site, and it's time to save Ranger HQ before the developers wipe it clear away

  • I still remember watching reruns of this show back in the early 80's... This is right up there with the top productions this country has seen... To see this landmark destroyed by developing greed would be a true shame... Long live ***SKIPPY*** in the hearts of all Australians.

  • I watched Skippy when I was around 6 years old in the early 70s in the UK. It was the first time I saw a helicopter and I knew from that day what I wanted to do. 38 years later I live in Australia and own a 'Skippy' Bell 47 helicopter. Long live Skippy!

  • I have been told the Bell from this series in in a Hanger up in Queensland, still touted as the Skippy chopper.

  • Shame about the set .... and as far as Skippy himself goes ... him and his kind go down an utter treat on the BBQ!!!

  • @kiwibob72 dumb ass ! vulgar, crude and tasteless !!!!!!!!!

  • @poffy8888 NO .... they are not tasteless in the least, they are actually really nice to eat and are FANTASTIC on the BBQ, really fine grain in the meat, perhaps you should try some before commenting ...... though I'll take an educated guess that you'll need to de-hug yourself from that tree and get your head out of the clouds first!

  • @kiwibob72 y dont you try human meat too. much tastier thankanga !

  • man i remember watching repeats on GWN before it was taken off and they should preserve the park!

  • you're frozen in time dont u think

  • Truley a shame that this is happening ! .....I belive that you Aussies owe it to children of all ages all over the world to look after this monument to the " Digger spirit "

  • Well made documentery, i got the Dvd to save for Christmas, it arrived in the UK today.

The Ranger Headquarters and surrounding area should definatley be saved. It would make a great tourist attraction.

  • god. ive got photos of me in 1973, 8 months preggers, it was a good place to go.fwhat happened , dont get the developers involved, please, where is the state gov.when they are really needed.

  • Thank you for bringing to light a most cherished part of Australian Television history. I also watched the documentary

Skippy - Australia's first Superstar. In fact I

liked it so much I bought the DVD ($21.99

at JB Hi Fi). I loved Skippy and still remember watching it when I was growing up as a young Aussie boy.

boy. What a wonderful Show ! and I too feel that it should be preserved and not forgotten

  • I agree. SSkippy was shown in Canada and wish the DVD was rewlwased in Canada. I lovbed the show.

  • Yeah mate with plum sauce but he was a bit stringy I thought.

  • @motleycruesader DIKHED........

  • Its ok I just saw skip & he is going to Take Those Developers Out Now ttttttttt

  • Thanks for doing this great video. One for the memories and two for raising the issue of preserving a very important part of Australia. Skippy was and still is Australia's biggest and most well known export. Please everyone ..pass this clip on to others to raise awareness and help ensure this place is always kept alive.

  • Thank you, looks like the Skippy doco finally made it to air, it was on ABC1 tonight, nice to see some of the cast as they look today. It was a fascinating insight indeed.

  • Hi Leo, My name is Penny Edmonds and I'm heading up the Waratah Earth Sanctuary Support group. This video is wonderful, and it reflects everything I feel about Waratah. I have sent you an email and I hope that you will reply.

    Penny

  • Hi Penny..I have not forgotten you, very soon I will have a update done, just too much real world work on at the moment, I have had zero time to spend the day to do a nice update, and sort out links on this video as well.

  • Hi Leo, I need your help again now. Can you please call me.

    Penny

  • Skippy died. A friend of mine worked on the series and tells me, once, to get ''the shot'' they threw a roo off a huge bush rock (about 30foot high) that was one instance, im also told there were many other failed ''roo stunts'' resulting in fatal injuries.

As for the set still being there, great, it should be a heritage listed spot.

  • We believe you We have seen "roo stunts"

  • OMIGAWD, he's taking the piss surely!

  • Skippy let me down as a child i will never forget this brings back a deep unseated hatred for skippy and friends.i joined the shippy fan club and never got my skippy lapel pin wich is all i wanted so i could wear it to school with my mates they got theres Bloody kangaroo i Hate you I WANT MY LAPEL PIN

  • this is disgusting that this area is not preserved ,,and open to tourists and maintained as a place to see where our icon came from,,,,neglecting the animals is a disgrace...noone in their right mind should own this but the government ,,,there needs to be intervenement from the state government to preserve this site and what made it famous....im disgsted about this it makes me sick that our histrory is being rotted away

  • From what I saw of the place, someone better act fast, the area around the park is changing real fast.

The last thing the new local residents will want is a tourist attraction brought back to life.

Sort of has me thinking who is exactly driving this place into the ground.?

  • You are quite right about these Labour Governments allowing our history and heritage just rot away in all areas! As they only respect their own internal history of the party politic! Even though its large numbers of public servants are TEACHERS for god sakes? They teach what? More fore the holy dollars to the UNIONS stuff all else that which makes up this country? NOT JUST PAID VOTERS??????????????????????

  • Thanks for the mini tour.

Why do so many idiots have to comment on this?

  • you commented retard

  • @erickj247 COZ U GOT NO FEELINGS, DUDAAAA

  • Well thats where we differ, queenie boy - I'm no fag but I respect your right to out yourself on Youtube. Say it loud, say it proud....you do seem to have some other issues to deal with, though - good luck with that...

  • stupid tool - where are you from thats so fuckin fantastic?

  • Skippy is an icon,he will never die

  • Really interesting - thanks for posting. It would be great to preserve /restore the set. Australia really doesn't have a lot of places like this. Brings back a lot of memories.

  • liked the vid btw. thanks!

  • whats wrong with people?

    you got any roo,s left¿

  • I was searching this for a long time and manage to get it this time. Bring back memories. Thanks.

  • I grew up Watching Skippy and watching this short Clip of yours made me cry. I love watching the show when I was growing up in the 1970's and still am. Great work Mate.

  • That actually makes sense to me, thanks.

  • lol.

  • Growing up in Canada in the 60's Skippy gave me my first introduction to Australia. I really don't remember much about the show but it along with the Forest Rangers (a Canadian Show) were two of my favourites.

  • Money from the sale of the new dvd,s should have gone to restoring the park...

  • A perfect example of the lack of lateral thinking by the NSW Government and the NSW Tourism Board. With the degree of global 'branding' Skippy has had, you'd think it would be part of the 'Summer Bay' day trip.

  • Excellent comment, I totally agree, you could do two classics TV shows in one day, mind you the residents up that way are now quite used to the recluse this part of Sydney has.

  • Thanks for this. I can't believe they are just leaving it all there there to rot!.

  • The doco you mention is called Skippy: Australia's First Superstar. It will be broadcast on ABC in Australia and BBC in UK, both around end of August 2009. I hope you like it.. I wrote and directed it...

  • Thank you for make me revive good memories from my childhood. Very nice

    Cheers from Costa Rica.

  • We just keep selling ourselves out. SHAME SHAME SHAME

    oi oi oi

  • I email this link to ch 9 syd i like to see if they commet hear ... i bet zip ..

  • I am not sure Ch9 can do anything, they were just a station who played the series, I believe the old production company related to the series is still around, you have to remember the surviving producers would be in their 80's / 90's now, the actors in their 60's / 80's

I still find it curious that the producers of the series built a real Ranger Headquarters building, thats very unusual in the film industry to make something built to last, usually everything is fairly make shift.

  • Bloody Brilliant at lest someone cares about sydneys icons / tv show of yesteryear the goverment doesent give sh#$t about anythink australian any more 5 stars for this video ... it takes some one form WA to care bloody hell ...

  • A very interesting point, the TV series Home and Away use the park as a location, but keep well clear of Ranger HQ.

I went there as a kid on a school excursion, great memories and a tangible experience which is priceless.

Seeing it in the state it's in today is really sad, lets hope the Documentary will shine some light on this very special place.

  • It would be a cultural tragedy for this icon of Aussie TV to be lost when it has survived souvenir hunters this long.

  • I think the fact it is well away from major main roads and surrounded by electric fencing keeps looters out.

  • I love this video. It use ti be on TV when I was a kid but then b4 I left Canada in the early 70s I use to watch it on a french channel, then when I returned to the states 15 years ago I was watching it on the Animal Planet.

I hope the release the DVD collection her in Canada I would buy it,

  • I just hope the money raised from the DVD's could go into preservation of this unique film set and environment.

There is also issues related to a actor from the series now asking where is the money he's owed, seems they were verbal contracts and no one ever thought the series would be a international long term success spanning 40 years.

  • I watched Skippy in French in Quebec in the 70s and 80s, and I visited the HQ in early 2004 during a 3-month trip Down Under. At the time, they were trying to reintroduce local fauna in the park or had some sort of preservation mission going on. Now, there's a development company right next to the park? I'm disgusted.

  • The so called now owners of the park failed...epic failed in fact.

Now the area is a shell without a soul, and in need of some action.

A big issue is the park is tucked away far from the public eye, hopefully this video will act as a wake up call.

  • thanks so much - great job :)

  • I had to tell someone Skippy is in trouble, this icon of Australia needs to be saved.

  • I watched skipp in the seventies as a kid in Ghana, West Africa, it was fantastic, a show that no kid want to miss. It was very very popular and this video brings back that childhood feeling of sitting before the TV and inpatiently waiting for Skipping the Bush kangaroo show to start. Thanks for this video.

  • Amazing fact here, I never knew it was seen in West Africa.

Thanks very much for posting this info.

  • I frew up in Virginia in the sixties. I watched Skippy in the AM before school, and in the afternoon after school.

  • To tell you the truth, I am amazed just how widespread Skippy is, this video has far more comments coming from outside Oz..

  • They did an excellent dubbed parody called 'Skipinda the Punjabi Kangaroo' on the British series Goodness gracious me :)

  • I recall an interview with Tony Bonner regarding his time on "Skippy".

The funniest comments to come out of it was Tony's recollection of his first day on set.

He said that he saw a large hessian bag moving about,

inquiring as to what it was,

he was told it was the beloved "Skippy"and that this was a way of keeping Skip safe and relaxed from sounds etc.

Tony Bonner commented that if that was the treatment the show's star recieved he was not looking forward to seeing his dressing room.

  • It seems Tony Bonner is in court with the producers of the series, seems his contract was a verbal one, and now some 40 years on he is chasing some money he believes is owed to him. Some of the producers would be in their 80's now, Tony's 65.

  • Special thanks of support to my local paper who ran an article related to this video...

Bush Telegraph your the best a lovely box of chocolates is headed your way.

  • This video was gold ! It brought so many childhood memories back to me.. Thanks for producing this video LeoKim mate..

  • I've been to Skippy Park (As it was called years ago) a number of times and I'm rather disgusted at how they've let the place deteriorate. It should be preserved by the National Trust for its historical and cultural value.

  • Ahh...skippy. Now that takes me back...WAY BACK!!! "What's that skip?"

  • Skippy was a favourite of mine back in Portugal in the early 70's...sad to see that his mid-century HQ is so run down. What can we do to help Skippy's pad?

  • thanks for sending me this video, and your apparent love for this series.

  • Thanks for drawing my attention to this, leokimvideo.

  • how did you know that I was a kind of a skippy fan?

  • I was taught by a friend to "know your audience"

  • Well done. I thought it was a great series when I watched repeats in the 70s. Tony Bonner (Jerry the helicopter guy) was recently in the news, feeling he'd been ripped off for royalties from 'Skippy' and now the DVDs will make the owners of the series a little bit happier while denying Tony well-earned cash. BTW his daughter plays Steph Scully on 'Neighbours' Maybe we can get Tony to work at a revamped heritage listed 'Waratah National Park' set. Bradman, Gough, Lawson, Hoges, and Skippy!

  • i'm not sure that Tony Bonner and Carla Bonner are related?

  • Hei

I want you to know that you would get lots of support from the Nordic Countries, where Skippy is played every week on TV. Make them aware of your cause.

It seems this is something that needs to be preserved. Generations of children grew up with the little Eastern Grey Kangaroo...

Hope you get some more coverage. Go to the media and milk it.

  • Thanks for your info, and I am amazed with the world wide spread of people who know this series, not only that it seems to cover a huge age group.

  • what a shame.!!

  • sad that no one take care of the park.

  • Wow! Being an avid yesteryear fan of Skippy, I totally forgot that there could have been a film set. Great video! Hopefully it will be reopened again but NOT to developers.

I only ever knew the fate of Skippy the kangaroo. Apparently, being underpaid, he got totally bemused with his pay and one day, with the helicopter left running, he jumped into it and, being a trained pilot, he flew off.

  • He was never seen again until a few years back when it was discovered that he now owns shares in the development company that built next to the park. He also changed his name to Pete after marrying a Koala bear. They never had kids. He blamed TV pressure and the press.

  • Its not only skippy who was bemused with the pay, the chopper pilot is now taking action for money owing after 40 years, its in the courts now.

  • This video has certainly struck a nerve in many countries, overseas viewers can't believe the Skippy set still exists, but the story is unfolding to who approved the development next door, I would still love to know the future plans for the site.

  • Good one Leo! Poor Skippy - long gone but well remembered!

  • That was amazing! Poor Skip! Da Da Da Dump De Dump! Da Daaattt De Dump, De Dump De Dump De Dump dee Dar deee De deee! It's too hard to type the rest of the song! hehehhe!

  • Interesting!

  • thanks ive never seen skippy the kangaroo but you have reminded me to watch it :)

    thanks

  • Good one Leo. A timely reminder of a very popular childrens series.

  • OMFG there!!!!! i saw skippy!!!! he was running towards hq!!!!!!! he's up to somthing... ¬_¬

  • yay. 60's.

  • Yes, it should be saved. If it was restored, tourists would come.

  • Yet another very interesting video =) I liked watching this one.

  • awsome!!

  • Of'course it's worth preserving.. anything with the remotest cultural or historical heritage should be preserved! :)

  • Great video. I'll see if I know anyone who liked this show. It looked great.
