Dont knock the enthusiasm of the crowd. It's pure adoration and they were dead quite when he played. Beautiful song. I miss this guy so much. Still terribly sad about his tragic death.
This reminds me of the crowd in LA when I saw him(some months before he died) at the Henry Fonda...they sounded EXACTLY the same! I thought it was just the LA crowd that acted this way. I was sooo PISSED at them...rude fucks! And he seemed a bit overwhelmed at the time...with all the shouting. I was telling people to shut the fuck up...but was drowned out. You figure that someone that would be into Elliot Smith(his audience)...would have more respect for him...pshhh...
I was at a show one time and a singer who will go unnamed responded to heckling-requests with several one-liners. The best was: "I'll play a song with the same notes, just in a different order."
Your right. The crowd is being a bit obnoxious. That may explain why he chose to cover this song because of the line, "Get me out of here. I hate it here"
taberjohnson... I so agree with you. Why do people feel the need to do that to musicians?? so annoying and rude. I love seeing someone like Steve Earle just shred those people by saying things like "Yeah, sure. I'll play that song for ya. And 30 seconds into it you'll be asleep in your chair."
@taberjohnson18 I was just thinking about that. At least 90 wasted seconds. As if there's a chance you might shout the one song he had completely forgotten to add to the setlist
@taberjohnson18 yeah it's so ridiculous, it's pointless to yell requests because usually Elliott had a set list to play. I'd be happy to just see him play any song, I don't get why these people animalistically ordered him to play songs.
Thank you so much for posting all the clips from this show! My husband and I were at this one, and it was so beautiful. The yelling did get out of hand at one point, but I chalk that up to how funny and conversational Elliott was that night. I had never seen him live before and was surprised by that. Watching this makes me really sad and really happy, I'm welling up a bit. Thanks again.
Right before Elliott made the comment about Junk Bond Trader not sounding good acoustic, I said the same thing out loud. Almost as weird as when my boyfriend is about to say something, but then I end up basically saying it for him...
I found out about (or actually listened to) Elliott for the first time while looking for a Big Star version of "thirteen" to show someone. His cover is what came up instead and now he is one of my favorites =)
Yeah, enough to make you go kill yourself. (Oops.) It's the Bill O'Reilly theory of getting noticed: shout loud enough and not only you but a few around you will think you are important.
It's funny how they keep screaming songs for him to play while he's retuning his guitar, as if the next song he's about to play doesn't matter to them.
Holy fuck. Those fans need to shut the hell up. Why the fuck do they shout out what ever they want? Elliott should do what ever the hell he wants and not get shit like that.
Despite all that interruptions, Elliott's performance was GOLD.
Haha that poor guy who keeps screaming "MISS MISERY!" throughout the whole concert never got noticed. I bet Elliott was trying to get away from that song so he ignored him.
Oh my god, you guys are so right. That crowd are a bunch of losers.
I'm not even that familiar with that much of Elliots stuff but although great back in the day, Oasis don't really fare too well against the test of time.
Platitudes wrapped up in cliches encassed in soul selling, hurricane conquering machismo? No thanks. Big Star will do just fine.
@rapmaster It was obnoxious, but for the majority of the night the audience was rapt with attention. This was an encore, so I give them a little slack. (FWIW I kept my mouth shut.)
I love Big Star...and I have fallen in love with Eliott Smith...his XO album made me think he was great but a friend recommended Either/Or and it blew me away.
Don't get me wrong, XO is a great album, but it's too overproduced, too slick. Either/Or captures Elliott in another one of his, "Everything sucks" periods, and the songs from the album are probably his best.
