The only problem with this BTR-90 is that from 1992 only 15 or something units were produced. Russian Armed Forces are not buying them. Russians to develop a new project "Gilza". Then abandoned it. Now, Russian launched a new project "Bumerang". I think instead of developing yet another project, Russian Ministry of Defence can easily buy Ukrainian BTR-4: Western layout, amphibious, better protected than BTR-80, fuel tanks outside crew compartment, remotely controlled weapon station.

pretty as it is, don't think it'll matter much when a maverick or a hellfire comes flying into the top. Russians know NONE of their armor will get anywhere unless U.S flyers have a tough time with the SAMS, and even then the wild weasels will have that taken care of.

Most IFV's aren't meant to survive direct over-105mm hits and HEAT warheads,they are meant go give the Infantry protection from small-arms fire,provide Anti-Tank/Anti-Air Defense,Screening Capability and fire support.

A stryker can only withstand small arms fire .30 cal or smaller.

Yeah right, the Stryker sucks, but the BTR series sucks even more. The protection is really shit, any small arms AP will go right through it. The BTR was meant to get as many "grunts" under armor for as cheap as possible. I guess its better than walking BUT due to the nature of wheeled carriers, the protection is never enough, especially if you want them to swim.

You mean this new BTR-90? Maybe... Although I wouldn't bet on it. It probably only has that protection level in from, on the sides it might not even be 7.62 AP. This thing is also heavy as hell and just proves that for this role, M-113 style vehicles are so much better. BTR can go to FSB troops or something like that.

all the footage shot of the 14.5 is not from a btr 90, its mainly out of a btr 80. 90's mainly mount chain guns and if you know your btr's you can tell the minor differences on the hull etc. Plus although infantry can fight from within the vehicle, the btr series are armoured personnel carriers unlike the bmp series that are true IFV's..........

I was wondering what the best weapon for a Humvee would be and I looked at it compared to a BTR...All i have to say is that the USA really has something to fight with, because a mini-gun would tear this apart as fast as this would a Humvee...but if this launcher was on a Humvee...

@videogames73 Obviously an RPG would destroy it. But that goes for pretty much almost all APC's out there. Additional armour, active protection or even slat armour would give it a better protection and even protection against RPG's. But an APC is an APC ..a battlefield taxi primarily meant to drop the infantry off before they go and do their thing, and not meant to go into a hot zone were there are tanks IFV, choppers and etc.

@videogames73 m113 has been taken out plenty of times by far less then an RPG. Hell, In Vietnam  there were even reports that a 7.62x39 mm round was able to pierce it. Without add on protection like the once I mentioned in my previous reply ..a 12.7 mm rounds would rip it in shreds. I think you're thinking of Bradley infantry fighting vehicle which is well protected even without add on protection. But even Bradley's been taken out by RPG's and older rounds of RPG's at that.

@gwhunter1986 I like your comment. However I would not call a BTR-90 an APC. It has far too much armament and can only hold 9 men apart from crew. A BTR 90 has:

A 30mm automatic cannon

A 30mm automatic grenade launcher

A anti tank missle

&

Openings for men inside to fire RPGs while moving

It can be deployed by air (with parachutes), Sea (amphibious), land (top speed is around 60mph) and can hold 9 fully equip units. Also it is not that expensive.
