You can't really tell where the segments are, you just have to try to criss-cross back and forth roughly the same distance both right and left to stay in the same vertical zone. Doing multiple runs I think you get a feel for how far you should be traveling for the maximum spawns and probability of actually being over the segment line. - DragonSoul
