  • Anyone knows the name of the intro? Thks

  • I saw this movie for the first time today at school, and it was like a dream, I didn't know Jonathan Caouette before and I have to say that he just made a dream for everyone from his own life

  • I'm with the others, this movie is probably the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I could only get through half of it.

  • beau

  • 400,000 $ in clearing rights

  • I still can't get over how this film cost a mere $218 to make.

  • i just got back from new york. i was in the west village at a starbucks off 7th ave. in line..i saw this guy..someone i recognized.. for 10 minutes i couldn't remember how or who? it was jonathan caouette! lol i was going to approach him, but not for the reasons you might think. i'm not starstruck...the reason was, i teach film and i wanted to let him know that i was using his film to teach. the film is incredible. 1 criticism: the shots in 2002 were too narcissistic, too self conscious.

  • Jonathan Caouette is a wonderful person. He came to speak at my college this week and he and this movie changed my outlook on life. It was the last class I attended before I decided to take a semester off because of depression. Seeing him so happy now gives me hope for myself.

  • @CrosbySinatraAndDean He seems like a good guy, and you know what? take your semester off, I did the same and it worked for me, at least to feel more at ease. Good luck.

  • That Jonathan is all right, He treats his family well. This is a great film, and really shines a much needed light on mental illnesses that a lot of families deal with.

  • I love Jonathon's grandpa and grandma. They are sweet folks. Even his mom is a sweety. She seems like a little girl or something...

  • Comment removed

  • I haven't been this disturbed/scared watching a movie since I first saw The Exorcist. That's as much of a mentally disturbed family as I've ever seen.

    Drugs er bad, mmmkay?

  • Liked tarnation...Jonathan is a wonderful man, a lovely guy...but the rawness and the starkness was too much for me, I felt uncomfortable. I can understand what they mean by "nervy" when they use that euphemism.

  • Can I buy any decent camera with $218 ?

(my insane family would make me rich !!!)

  • This is a great example on how to turn $216 into $1,162,014.

  • This is one of the best documentary films ever made. Such beautiful honesty without an ounce of sentiment.

  • @TheLeaver1234 You know NOTHING.

  • @fanguk2 boy, that was a real useful comment.

  • @TheLeaver1234 Twice as useful as yours it seems.

  • I love it!

  • I saw the movie yesterday on tv. really disturbing but sad but also full of love

    i love it!

  • one of the most powerful docs on the earth <3

  • impresionante esta película.

  • Where could I watch this for free online? :( This seems so touching and tragic.

  • sooo, what is this about?

  • i had the best wank over this film

  • this movie was an epic documentary... he went through soo much in his lifetime and still managed to make sumthing of himself...

  • A beautiful, haunting and moving masterpiece.

  • so he filmed himself over 20 years?

  • stream it online at #FTW Go Movie World . com #CUTE

  • One of the songs in this movie is called "Depersonalized", is the person in this movie suffering from depersonalization? I haven't seen the movie yet, but i will most likely see it if it has something to do with depersonalization.

  • @potetgull0

I think Jonathan suffered from it through accidently smoking a joint laced with pcp. At least that's what I remember from the film.

  • This movie is amazing, I think that I will have to watch it over and over and over.

  • does anybody know where i can watch this? i really want to see it

  • @Modog34

    Netflix. Instant, man.

  • watch it at this site for free - 1000 Movies Free . com

  • Yea I thought this movie was amazing. A masterpiece is right. Just imagine if everyone made a movie about their life and was 100% honest about it, not skipping a moment.

  • whats the name of the last sonf?

  • Wow! Production budget $218.

    Prints and Advertising Budget $100,000

And Worldwide Gross $1,162,014... NOT BAD!

  • this film reminds me of how tough life can be

  • this movie is disturbing

  • whats the song at 1: 47?

  • safe as milk by hopewell

  • Amazing Amazing film!!! one of THE Best Documentaries ever!!! <3

  • ribenapt:

It's the Tarnation Theme, and you can get it if you google for "tarnation music", first link.

  • The only way i could describe this film is that it alters an emotion in me that i cannot describe.. sadness, hatred, love, convulsing breaths of air .. this film isn't for everybody.. i yearn for films that give me a similar high like this one did.. pure gem

  • Same here. I've experienced almost every emotion watching it. It seems that life writes best screenplays. Best? It's not the most appropriate word here... Anyway an amazing film.

  • im sure i will get hated on for this but i felt that jonathan was exploiting his family members with this film. a family film should't air your dirty laundry for everyone to see.

  • to

    nobeefbaby

i think dirty laundry is exactly what most cinema is missing. We create fake stereotypes and ways to live in movies but when it is real there is always dirty laundry. This is one of the most of the most authentic films about life I have seen and do not think censoring in any way will help

  • well i mean it has its part in cinema, i'm not arguing that. i liked the documentary and i don't think it should be censored. he had a vision and it came across well. but i guess what i'm getting at is would you show your family members worst problems to the world? i couldn't.

  • anyone know what the song at 1:11 is called?

  • I saw this movie in a sleepless night 2 years ago and I can say: I love it! If you see this movie you will know that your life is very good in contrast of this!

  • Hands down the worst movie I have ever seen.

  • This movie was .... I don't know, it was good for what it was but some part of me felt a little let down by it.

I grew up in a similar situation to Caouette and was hoping this film would have a lot I could relate to. Parts of it I could and really touched me, other parts I hated and they felt horribly contrived and self-absorbed.

I guess Caouette took a different approach to this topic and to life than I did so there was less I could feel than I hoped. Guess I expected a lot.

  • @harlemfatso look no further..players guide should do it

  • @geogodley .... um what? not quite following.

  • ma che cazzo è sta roba?

  • the only film that may top this in the doc genre is dear zachary

  • this film hurt my heart butalso made me believe even more in the concept of a universal conciousness...as the pain he and all his family members experience is recognizable by many. I hope the catharsis of the creating of this film allows freedom from its sufferring as it is viewed and shared by so many.

  • whats the name of the first song?

  • It's the saddest, most disturbing/depressing movie i've ever seen ! At one point I felt uncomfortable by just watching it ... in others the LOVE just blows out of the TV ... you'll just feel a lot of confused feelings by watching it !

  • You know who gives less a fuck about your life than you do? EVERYBODY...

I won't waste my time or money on this BS...

  • I especially don't care about your life.

  • great work with just $218 of budget

  • I have seen the movie Tarnation and it is a masterpiece! Heart breaking och thrilling and beautiful...... words are not enough! You have to see for yourself.

  • The song in 1.11:

    "Tarnation" - Max Avery Lichtenstein

    He wrote beautiful music :)

  • I saw this film and was in a state of bliss. Excellent work.

  • Anyone have an idea of the name of the song 1.11 in?

  • its called tarnation and its on itunes

  • one of my favourite portrayls of psychiatric illness in cinema - very interesting.

  • only costed $218.32

  • not bad for $600000 profit

  • 1 million worldwide

  • This movie was absolutely unreal. One of the most amazing experiences ever.

  • Could someone please tell me what is the song that plays at 1:51 ???

  • Safe as milk by Hopewell on their album The Curved Glass. It's really good, go buy it!

  • Thank you so much for this. Problem is, i can't find their album :OS I even checked on imesh.

  • This is an astonishing, almost unbearable movie. I think the scene where Renee walks around his apartment with the pumpkin may be the most uncomfortable thing I've ever seen in a movie - and I've seen Titicutt Follies. It's a deeply flawed movie, made, as it is, entirely out of flaws. So what? It's also not like anything else.

  • a miracle of beauty, that is what this movie is.

  • Thanks for posting this. A reminder to see what looks like a fascinating and important film. Obviously this hits very closely to where some people cannot go. All the more reason to see it.

  • I am un inspring film maker. After seeing these true filming ginus I feel in love with it. It is not a chicken or beef film. By that I mean your not thinking what your going to have for dinner when waching it. your in the movie and captured by itself, from the cinematography and the music. A ture art was made.

  • Then again - maybe I need to

  • I don't think I can watch this film...

It hits about every nail there is on the head.

  • I'm sorry, but I can't get over how sooooooooooo self-indulgent this thing is. HE ambushes the people he loves on camera. That's not good film making. It's sheer conflict for shock value and sympathy. No purpose but that guy's own love of watching himself on screen.

  • Everyone has their own opinion, especially about this movie, because you either love or hate it. But I loved it. I know the ending scene when he laid against his sleeping mother seemed a tiny bit contrived, but in the director's comments on the dvd he explains, to the audience, that it might seem that he was exploiting his family (pumpkin scene) but in reality he was just filming everyday stuff without the idea of making it into a movie someday. stop trying to use big words and look deeper.

  • Which word was "big?" "Fucked" or "pap?" Here's a big word: DILETTANTE! "Everybody has an opinion" is the most useless, PC aphorism used today. Not looking deeper into this movie is what I did. Follow your own advice and realize this isn't that enlightening. Any of those words too big?

  • who the hell starts their youtube comment by saying "this is such a pretentious overrated piece of masturbatory pap". just fuckin say "this was a piece of shit". Its people like you that really dont know shit, I am a PhD student but that doesnt mean I dont listen to other's opinions, dumbass. If your not enlightened by this REAL story then ur fucked up. Until you have filmed the past 20 years of your life and actually had a interesting story to tell dont give this guys story any shit.

  • The rich irony of your comment is astounding. Essentially Johnathan (the filmmaker who you are fighting for) is finding a medium in which he can be fully expressed about an issue he can't simply talk about. "Solidgold" is expressing himself in a medium in which he feels comfortable. It's staggering. The rage you feel over his pretentious and devil-may-care attitude is exactly what you are displaying in fighting back.

And I want to know when using the English language became pretentious.

  • righto good sir lol.

and the english language never became pretentious people became pretentious. its just one medium of language as is all ways and as a film is a medium of language as well

  • This is such a pretentious overrated piece of masturbatory pap. I sat through the whole thing hoping this guy would do something of value for his fucked up family, and it turns out it was just an egotistical unabridged youtube video. It was never about his mom. It was about getting his ass on camera and in Shortbus, or some shortsighted ego-driven jeremiad. And that last part is soooooo contrived. I can't believe you don't see that. Youtube "Frank & Cindy." It's "solid gold."

  • I thought I was a cynic! some people just have to disembowel everything that has beauty. This film is mesmerising. I couldn't stop watching it. No point in being jealous. Just enjoy it!

  • Best documentary since Woodstock. Woodstock and Tarnation are my top 2 movies! Roll on All Tomorrow's Parties!

  • One of my all time favorite and most personal documentary!

  • he made this all on iMove.

  • This movie is good if you like watching a gay guy as a kid dancing around in his moms clothes for a good 20 minutes.

  • This is one of the sadest things,I've ever seen.

  • i saw it... its very good film ... no doubt about it

  • thank you

  • oh my god i love this movie.

it's soo powerful. i cried at the end.

  • I want to know the name of the song at the end of the trailer if anyone could help me out? :)

  • Safe As Milk by Hopewell. (:

  • Thank you sooooo much!!!!!!!!!!

girl or guy idc i'd kiss you if you were here right now! haha

  • haha! awwh, no problem! *kisskiss*

    - ~mystery girl~ :P

  • haha you're a star!!!!! * SMOOOOOOCCCCHHHHHHH *

  • great film..and the music makes it perfect!

  • a great film !

  • por ke dicen k es perturbadora???

  • porque la gente con mente cerrada es idiota

  • Anyone know the name of the song at the 1:48 mark till about the end?

  • does anyone know the name of the beautiful song with the piano? great movie by the way.

  • flutterr its "tarnation" by Max Avery Lichtenstein

  • GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!

  • I saw this movie many months ago (in french ^^) and I think that it's the best film! I think about it ever, it's very strange... But I love it, it's a very great movie, congratulations Jonathan :)

  • damn i fucking cried through this movie this shit is so brilliant

  • perfect example of how a a good trailer is not indicative of a good movie. unless you enjoy nonsensical imagery and depressing home video (and we're talking actual home video shit here, edited in imovie), just enjoy the trailer and leave the mvoie itself alone

  • This is the most disturbing, scariest movie I've ever seen. I turned it off halfway through the movie. I couldn't stomach it.

  • What is the film/documentary actually about?

  • This movie is amazing, I've seen it at least 5 or 6 times and it still amazes me when I watch it. Jonathan Caouette is a very talented and strong man.

  • trailer > actual movie

  • this movie looks real good

  • i love film

  • Muy bien hasta el final, bueno, donde acaba porque: NO HAY FINAL!! se hubiera esperado para que se definiera algo en su vida no?

    Brillante edición

  • This is a beautiful film, I have the deepest respect for this man.

  • Crumb! is way better. I guess the truth is, I like a good travelouge much more than navel-gazing, but fuck all if "Sherman's March" ain't the best doc since Primary.

  • i saw it yesterday and yes i think so. the best movie ever. lot of feelings in it. i love it.

  • one of the best films ever:)

  • I see it yesterday too.

It's the best film I've ever seen.

    Wow...

  • Incredible. Better than any fictional movie wich I've ever seen. Why always make up storys about robots, aliens, murders and whatever when live gives us so incredible storys? This is a film that really touched me. And that's something that NO fictional film ever really did!!!!!

  • fucking GREATEST MOVIE ever. i watched it so fucked up and it is magic

  • Additionally, if this is exploiting his family for fame, then you could say that about just about any autobiography out there, as a previous commentor says. The message is there, and it is a beautiful one. That is what is important to me.

  • I have to disagree with those that are saying that this movie is exploitation, or that the son is obsessed with himself. I believe that what he has produced here is a natural extension of himself, not forced, because videotaping himself was how he coped with his situation at home. It is a part of him, and the most natural way to create an autobiography.

  • I saw this movie in Brazil and I have no doubt that's a great movie, deep and powerful.

    thanks Jonathan!

  • I personally thought this was the worst movie I've ever seen (and I've seena lot of movies). But hey, to each his own, so if you like it that's good. Judge for yourself.

  • yeah you "thought". good you changed your mind.

  • Cool , german friends...

    :)

  • I saw it in Germany too yesterday. Unfortunatly I didn`t see the first 10min. If someone could upload it, that would be nice.

  • I've seen this movie yesterday on the channel 3.SAT, too! After the Movie I thought: "WOW, What a great movie, I've got to go and get it somewhere on DVD!!" But here in germany, I can't find it with german subtitle!

This movie is one of the greatest I've ever seen, really! Respect!

  • I saw this movie yesterday in germany ... and it was so amazing

I would write more about this movie but my english is to bad for this

    --->this movie is awesome!

    Alles Gute aus Deutschland!

  • What's the first song in the trailer?

  • im trying to figure that out too. shazam can't recognize it either.

  • It's funny how poeple love to hate this movie, saying it's made by a narcissic guy... Yet nobody will be called narcissic for writing and publishing an autobiography.

Even if the story it tells was fictional, this movie would still be powerful and poignant, to a far greater extent than other very good movies.

  • I saw that film yesterday.. I've never seen such a wonderful thing!

Choking, powerful, secret, strange... AMAZING !

  • Very powerful movie.

  • i think this is just a film who wanted to share his life with other people. sometimes people just need to do that.

  • I saw this movie yesterday, amazing!

    Jonathan so charming and unique

  • I saw this movie at the Wexner Center at Ohio State University. The director had a Q&A session afterwards. The film itself was busy, messy, exploitative nonsense; completely self-indulgent. He came across not as someone deserving pity, but as someone deserving a good punch in the face. During the Q&A, I realized something: I was 100% right.

  • I saw this through netflix. I loved it so much, I bought the dvd. AWESOME!!!!

  • This film is the product of a man obsessed with himself, who is clearly in need of significant help. In my view its an exploitation of his own families mental illness, with the aim of making him famous. Him releasing it is unhealthy - the media reacting in the way they have to it - is nothing short of sick.

  • This is one of the best movies ever in my opinion :D

  • I agree!
