What pissed me off about this story and most people who demand everyone learn English is this fact:we are nation of immigrants. Unless you are Native American. Every wave of immigrants had to learn to assimilate and speak the language. It took awhile. Within a generation or two, the immigrants did assimilate. A great many people are interested in Spanish, including several members of my own (white) family, and French is the language people get most enamored by. I don't know why you think people like Dutch or Danish or Swedish. Perhaps because they are "Germanic," but you are under a serious misapprehension about a majority of people having an interest in those languages.

Why is it okay for a Latino in the US to not know how to speak English, but not okay for a Latino in the US to not know how to speak Spanish? I can't believe how anal some people are over someone with a spanish surname who doesn't speak spanish. Its' a pathetic hypocrisy that exists in the Latino community, which is why I distance myself from it. I'm a proud anglophone American and just because I have a spanish surname does not mean I'm required to swear allegiance to the Spanish language.

What pissed me off about this story and most people who demand everyone learn English is this fact:we are nation of immigrants. Unless you are Native American. Every wave of immigrants had to learn to assimilate and speak the language. It took awhile. Within a generation or two, the immigrants did assimilate. We have been doing this for 200 years, we need to stop acting like it is the first time with every new group that come over. We also need to teach our kids to polyglots

Giving people hell for speaking another language is just wrong! If they can't speak English, find somebody who can speak their language. I dont understand why you think she should have her job back.... the kid was being bullied and at this point she was the only one that could convey the message from the parent to the principal. I think she was embarrassed to say what happened. But either way it was neglect, being bi-lingual was part of her job.

Our founding fathers did not think about setting an official language and you have them to blame, not these Spanish-speaking people. Therefore a loophole was accidentally made. Whoops. They probably did not anticipate the influx of people immigrating from many other countries.
