  • King Kelly

  • Brilliant commentary, really adds to the excitement of the race.

Kelly was some man, wasn't he? That descent is awesome, especially at 5:30 where he's pedalling down around those bends, out of the saddle, while Argentin freewheels them.

  • kelly was a hard , hard man on the bike!

  • Argentin still speaks affectionately, if that's what you could call it, of his defeat at the hands of Kelly that day. A superb ride considering the gap Kelly had to make up in such a short distance. Bravo Sean.

  • Duffield is the worst cycling commentator af all time. He will talk about the local shrubbery while the winning break goes down the road. Idiot.

  • !!!! Kelly's gonna get it!! Kelly gets it!!!

  • fantastic race, fantastic commentator....

  • Great win,Dave Duffield a fantastic commentator.

  • I've watched hundreds of cycling races and this is still my favourite clip... of all time... love the bit when he says "Kelly's ROCKING out of the saddle!"

  • Great video, thanks.

Superb race that year - Kelly was a deserved winner with some awesome descending and astute tactics.

  • Awsome!!!!!!!

  • King Kelly!!! last classic victory with toe straps (i think) praise to David Duffield, who is the voice of cycling.

  • A pure Irish legend!!!

  • A pure Irish legend!!!

  • Love the part where you can hear the spectators at the finish go "Aaaaah" when the commentator states that Argentin has been caught by Kelly. They knew that Kelly would take victory from their man. Kelly's descent of the Poggio, proof of how fearless he was on the bike. Great days for Irish cycling. Ireland's greatest sporting hero.

  • @STKKCYC has he knocked dunphy off the top?

  • 2:08 "The firemen are behind pumping on the coals trying to catch..."

I'm assuming that's a reference to shoveling coal on a steam train? I love European sports commentators.

  • happy days here in ireland, sean kelly and stephen roche gave us great times back in the 80s and early 90s, once i got a taxi from nice airport when i was on a vacation in france, the taxi man asked us were we irish, we said yes, he went on to say he had cycled with the same team as kelly , he said sean kelly was a total gentleman who was a real humble man who insisted on sharing his winnings with the team, he could not speak higher of sean kelly

  • a great, and well deserved, win by Kelly. Argentin didn't descend fast enough, you can see him spinning more where Kelly is getting out of the saddle after each turn. then toward the bottom Argentin kept looking back... a bad move. it slows you down when you do that. he should have just gone like mad and never looked over his shoulder.

ditto on the Hincapie comment. Hincapie is a cry baby and can't, and never will, win in style of the likes of Kelly and the greats of the classics.

  • Wheel suckers you say..........., oh, you mean george hincapie. As in (he) george hincapied throughout the race. As in the guy's nothing but a george hincapie. Hincapie, wheel sucker extraordinaire.

  • Exciting race ! I like also the commentator...

  • Duffield is a complete idiot, he talks about irrelevant crap

  • Wheel sucking some say! What!!

Kelly caught Argentin with 1Km to go! Then it`s down to cat and mouse antics! Kelly was right to hold back to win!

    King Kelly!

  • nothing wrong with sucking wheel all the way, it's a bike race.

  • Truly wicked

  • i remember that day, i was sorry for Argentin's defeat, but Kelly was great, there's no doubt. Hats off!!

  • It is not true that Kelly sucked all the way. He was the only one able to close the gap. All by himself. Clearly a deserved win.

  • love this race, king kelly, thanks for uploading!

  • Ian Schur and Sean Yates between the involved in the last pile-up

  • Holy Shite!! I forgot about this!! Kelly's last great win! That was great!!! Toe clip pedals as well!! AWESOME!!

  • who's the commentator on this clip????

  • David Duffield.

  • Duffield really makes this clip different class he seems really emotionally involved which adds to he excitement

kelly has to be irelands most understated sporting hero. he was and is a man of absolute steel

thanx for the clip brilliant stuff

  • I love to watch this - Kelly totaly unexpected, comes from nowhere and Italian pride is shattered!! Marvelous sporting history

  • that was

    Fabulous!

    thanks

  • Excellent race - I remember watching it live. Truly a classic.

  • I remember i was sad for many days after this race, but Kelly was a Golden Fox (remembering from a Irish Pub xD )

  • YEAH BLUD...!! SEAN KELLY! NOT ON DRUGS!!!

i have a cycling game with him on the "ledgends teams" and he's called sean killy coz ogf copy rite, but thats not the point. just sayin' HE OWNS ASS!!!

  • Kewlios

  • He named his son Nigel? After Nigel Mansell???

  • Kelly the sidewinder!

  • Kelly-double hard.

  • bicycles.

  • I appreciate the posting, have the race on tape with different (Ligget's) commentary. This is one of the best finishes I've seen, wonder what those guys were on.

  • Sean Kelly: great, classy, outstanding !!!

  • Moreno Argentin! Big Work on the Poggio!

  • Kelly , the hardest of the very hard

  • What a fantastic chase and a dominating sprint. Kelly was a fine classics rider, though he is inclined to cheat at pub games! Being such a star, he can get away with it though.

  • Sean Kelly was super hard......thanks for posting this video, brilliant to see the great man winning another classic.

  • If memory serves, the '87 Giro did a time trial down the Poggio -- great idea!

  • I can't stop watching this video, I'm from Cork (around 2 hours from where Kelly is from) and it's great to see Kelly on top of his game :) I have a great picture of Kelly on Patricks Hill in Cork (a hugely steep hill) with the pain and determination on his face, an amazing man :)

  • where u get the kelly pic?

  • It's in the programme from the 1998 Tour De France

  • Sean Kelly was my hero, what a rider.

  • Absolutely magnificent. Am from Sean's hometown, this brings back some memories. Thanks a lot for posting.

  • I just love the way he had the confidence to still make Argentin work for the last km even though he caught him with such ease.

  • kelly is back with a bang!and the riders behind him otherwise!class ha

  • Good man Sean

  • brilliant! thanks for that. legend.

  • Thanks for the video, Sean Kelly was the man

  • Sean Kelly - what a class act.
