Dynasty was great live...Saw an unknown to me great trombonist in a jazz club Stockholm's Old Town in summer 1976. Imagine my surprise years later when the same guy appeared with Mingus Dynasty, Jimmy Knepper. He had on of the greatest album titles: "Cunningbird".
I thought Joe sounds great as always but Randy was killin, and nailed the 6/8 time. And the original solo by Booker Ervin had such a vibe to it. Of course he didn't have the modern thing like Joe. Good stuff..
@docsax I guess anyone employed by Mingus is by definition possessed of 'The Modern Thing", or else Mingus wouldn't have had them in the band...after all, what is Mingus if not modern?
this piece is also known as ' wednesday night prayer meeting ' mingus was a really eccentric guy, even the titles of some of his compositions reflect that.mingus dynasty's 'goodbye porkpie hat' is the one i like best.
Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting and Better Get Hit are two different tunes, both in the same time signature and with similar feels. They aren't the same piece.
Wonderful track with a great rhythm section providing constant infusion of creative energy. Beautiful opening bass solo. Love watching Jimmy Knepper take charge with Randy Brecker and Joe Farrell wailing. Beautiful unison riff. Thanks for the treat.
There is a concert of Aladar Pege, Hebie Hancock, and the late Tony Williams live at carnegie hall in New York.I believe the wife of the late Charles Mingus was so moved by his playing that she gave him one of his basses. The year was 1980.
This is a great version among many Mingus Dynasties...I love Billy, but miss Dannie Richmond! God rest Joe Farrell's troubled and beautiful soul..three hundred stars!
This is from a record called "Live At Montreux". That was one of the first jazz records I ever heard, and here is a video of it. Wow! Any more videos from this gig?

so they have 2 bassists? or is that a cello? or is it some weird optical illusion?
SammyLaDue 4 years ago
One is a 'guest' player - just there for that gig I believe

That's Mike Richmond (sitting between Aladar Pege and Billy Hart). The Mingus Dynasty actually had two bassists at that time.
