This is fantastic! I have this 78 recording. It was one my father had along with many others of Louis, Bix, Red Nichols and so many others.Copyin' Louis is my favorite I think. Jack runs out of steam at the end of Mental Strain at Dawn. I always thought that was a shame because otherwise it would have been a perfect recording. Hey, could any of us even make it half that far?!!! Thanks for posting this. Is there any more open solo work of note by Jack? What does he sound like on trombone?
Great video. Love the music, and the pics strongly depict the desperation of these of these poor people. Their travails are etched in their faces. They certainly did not have a lot to smile about.
Thank you for sharing this excellent post, which I have added to my "Jazz Playlist".
There are some cd's available issued by Jazz Oracle - check them out - he was an incredible man, just incredible.... Thank you for posting the record and also those beautiful pictures...
Thanks for the info on Jack Purvis, I also checked one of my books and found that he also played trombone, was a pilot, ran a dancing studio, set several of his hotel rooms on fire to avoid paying, worked as a chef, went to prison for a robbery in El Paso, in jail played piano in prison band, was granted conditional pardon which he violated and returned to prison, after prison worked as a pilot, radio repairman and a carpenter. Never returned to playing, what a life!
Nice stuff, Emrah - think it might be the first time I've heard Purvis, though I've known of him for years. Like the Depression-era photos, too; especially the bloodhound!
Funny, this has more to do with "copying Jabbo":-).
Great trumpet!!

This is amazingly rhythmically free for 1929. The Louis influence is there but Purvis has his own voice.

Sorry I realize that this is all Jack Purvis. A movie should be made of his life, what an fascinating life he had.
