My dear friends...the chords used are the 4 chords that are being used in 99,9% of all pop-songs on this planet. So stop accusing anybody of stealing and instead enjoy.
I guess it is a common enough cord structure that they could have come up with it on their own...but the beats per minute and length of the song are nearly identical and it's funny how the "Aahaah"s of Coldplay and Alizee's "Bada boms" occur at the same time and then transition back into lyrics at the same time. Just saying. Not really complaining. I'm kind of glad Coldplay had a hit with it, how else would geeks like me get to sing J'en Ai Marre at karaoke night in an NYS Bar?
No me gusto la mezcla ya ves que los 2 ritmos tienen los tiempos un poco distanciados y el mix de voces tampoco acopla Ninguno de fondo del otro. Solo las fotografias de Alizee me encantaron. Gracias
@croemy the third chord is different, the pitch in j'en ai marre goes up, and the pitch in viva la vida goes down, the fourth chord is also different as it is the same as the second, whilst the pitch in viva la vida is higher.
@startrekwarsmixguy the 4 chords are exactly the same, the only difference is the bass at some point: instead of C# - D# - G# - Fm, it becomes C# - D# - G#/C - Fm. That's all
also the chord pattern of "i'm yours" by Jason mraz has already been used by so many composers only that the key is different but progression is roughly the same. why nobody single out jason?
what about songs that use a common chord progression like canon? and not to mention mariah carey's "bye bye" is almost similar to an indonesian pop song which was created many years ago before bye bye. so everybody is copying each other?
Coldplay are kinda psychic : they excel at reinventing without their own knowing Cat Stevens, Alizée, Satriani... Maybe they invented a new wave ? After psychedelic, Psychic Wave ? LOL
It's not copying. I know many songs that use almost exactly the same chords anyway. This is shocking however. Is this what that that Coldplay case was about? Apparently someone (either Coldplay or the other) "stole" the notes and they went to court....Man I wish she did more concerts! They are my 2 favorites!
ok... coldplay sucks period... alizee is WAY better... coldplay = ugly, alizee = hot... so shut up :S alizee wins ++++++++++ alizee made her song WAY before viva la vida N !!! viva la vida (if u have seen the video) is about the french revo... so HE SO copied it
question: if it's not an uncommon chord progression, then... why aren't there more people saying some other band copied this from coldplay, or alizee, and vise versa?
I have been an Alizee fan for a couple of years and enjoy the pop sound. I never realized that Coldplay has taken that same melody and altered it to fit another song slightly, but the song is still there for our ears to hear. I think Alizee wins this one.
@goodolddaysgal51 Correction: they used the chord structure. The melodies are totally different! Strictly speaking, you can't copyright a chord pattern. The chord pattern in question has been used for decades. So Coldplay could've taken the pattern from any song since the 60s! Nonetheless, the fact that's in the SAME FREAKIN' KEY suggests that Coldplay did kinda copy Alizee. ;-)
@goodolddaysgal51 Are you ok? Coldplay's melody didnt remind me of J´en ai marre at all. And I listen to both!!! You only say this because Viva la vida beats Alizee so bad. And well, the people who write here are deceived fans of her because a Coldplay fan would never compare them to her.
i definitely hear the sam rythem.. but thats it. There's so many songs with same rythems, or even worse...same meolodies! This definitely isn't close enough for a law suit lol... but I think where they are going to see the problem... is the same BPM's... it's gonna look like they used her song as a guide! Whatever.. i like Coldplays
So the chords and rhythm are the same... but so are a million other songs that exist. That's what Pop music is... the same chords and rhythms with different melodies. Coldplay's melody is entirely unique and different.
I think you all need to shut-up. Its Christmas. Stop fight and enjoy the music.
So what if you sound like him, and he sounds like her...
Its music. No one owns it. Just sing along, enjoy it, and remember why baby Jesus was born, so Coldplay would be free to record a hit that sounds similar to a song Satriani stole from some french chick.
Enjoy music for what it is. Don't let EMI and copyright law tell you who's song is better. If it rocks, it rocks. Period.

PIRATAS.
