i made one with pvc and instead of using a ball valve i inserted an 0 ring inside the coupler. with three pumps from a standard bike bike i can shoot a ping pong ball 80ft.

at about 2:19 you can see the ball is already out of the barrel but the valve isn't even a 1/4 of the way open, need a valve that moves faster than you do.

shorter barrel won't give you more power. the expanding gasses will excape before they can release all of their potential energy behind the ball. optimum chamber to barrel ratio is 2:1. would also be improved through the use of a piston or modified sprinkler valve.

nice job though. best to start of with a basic ball valve design.

longer barrel should increase power too. as we all know from physics class gas expands and if you give the gas more time and space to expand in a barrel, your speed will increase
