One of the biggest differences between the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia is that the Tour remains loyal to the course whereas the Giro remains loyal the riders, especially Italian riders. There is no better example of this than the Giro courses designed for Francesco Moser in 1984 (mostly flat with plenty of ks dedicated to TTs) and the one designed for Marco Pantani in 1999 (mostly mountainous with few ks dedicated to TTs). Moser's maglia rosa non vale un cazzo!!
The 15th stage in the Giro 1984 was a time trial as well and MOSER distanced FIGNON of about the SAME time as in the final chrono. And no one talked about helipcoters !!
The fact is that MOSER was a lot better than Fignon in time trials and for that reason he DESERVEDLY won the Giro. END OF STORY.
@remoganda actually he wasnt better, the organisers just got rid of about every mountain pass so he could win and then cheated by placing a helicopter that creates about a 60 mph headwind in front of fignon. Moser was undoubtebly a great rider but had the organisers not fucked around with the route (saying some mountains were snowed over when they werent) fignon would have won, look at his tour performance later that year and tell me different
What a lot of crap !!! Moser was at his best and deservedy won this Giro. In this period the Giro was built "easier" because the best cyclers at the time weren't grimpeurs but athletes like Moser, Saronni and Maertens.
EN ESE MISMO AÑO,1984,FIGNON ESTABA EN EXCELENTE FORMA.LE GANÓ EN EL TOUR DE FRANCIA,A HINAULT Y A LEMOND. A HINAULT LE SACÓ 10 MINUTOS;Y A LEMOND 11.Y LA MONTAÑA LA ATACÓ DE MANERA MAGISTRAL.
Yes, I'm Italian but I must recognize that Giro was ruined for ten year (1977-1986) cause the organizers wanted at all coasts a Moser victory... It should be like to create today a Great Tour hoping Cancellara win it...The funny thing is that after 1987 Giro became the hardest of three Great Tours...
The importance of the RAI helicopter cannot be understimated. It was placed exactly between Fignon and Moser, creating a headwind for Fignon and a tailwind for Moser, helping the latter and harming Fignon.
@wenck in the 85 Vuelta, Robert Millar was robbed! He had 5mins lead on penultimate stage, the teams ganged up on him amongst other things, Delgado broke away & nobody informed Millar of the lead until it was too late. Some of his team mates were also stopped at a level crossing for minutes, no train ever arrived!

Thankyou - good information and footage about this Giro. Please do the same with the 1985 Vuelta if you can :)
