the great sound is the Mapex maple! these maple drums sound awesome wide open, I have the maple Mapex Saturn Pro Series. no muffling or anything like that to make up for poor quality inferior wood. I discovered Mapex shells 5 years ago and havent put any muffing on the heads since! they are the best sound I have ever played and I am on my 4th kit in 25 years of playing. this is my 1st Mapex kit.
