Isn't he really the best coloratura tenor ever?! Check out his Idomeneo (Fuor del mar like NO OTHER!) or Septimus from Handel's Theodora. He gives Juan Diego Florez (a very different kind of tenor, no repertoire overlap, I understand) a run for his money.
How beautiful!! The voices are absolutely sublime. Mozart at his best, the music is light and sparkeling like the golden sunlight dancing on the waves of a calm sea. And the plot contains everything. Drama, romance and comic relieve. Mozart in that respect truly was the William Shakespeare of the Opera. Thank you for posting this. Every opera fan should own this jewel.
Richard Croft is as great in Mozart as in Händel. The tempo is perfect. The aria is about Belmonte's loving heart beating with excitement (oh wie feurig = oh how fiery). His singing in German is very good, too, there is hardly an accent and the diction is perfect.
Thanks for your comment unisono. I did not mean that I find Belmonte boring. I had read an article by Ian Bostridge who said he, as a tenor, found him boring. I think Belmonte needs to be played as young and feisty not stuffy and dull. I think Richard Croft got it right here.
He is the best I ever seen and heard in this opera. Its hard to hear someone else seens I heard Mr Croft in this character. He is the best. And how he is singing it...Ahhh!
Oh Here it is. My favorite. He sings so beutiful here, I just loved this. I think Mozart, if he listen to this man also would have tears in his eyes because of this mans beutifulness in his vocie.
Do you have any of the other arias from Die Entfuhrung? I'm curious as to how he might have done Ich baue ganz :D

R.Croft has a very warm and elegant timbre. He is one of my favorites in current years. His Orphee with Mincowski is sublime.

@vitellia His "Fuor del mar" is INCREDIBLE! The cadenza at the end is just amazing in the Jacobs recording.

@vitellia I really love his Fuor der Mar. Wow! Totally agreed. Thank you very much for the information.
I also love Messiah, too.

what did you all think of the tempo? seems faster than all other versions I've heard. seemed a little rushed imho. voice is awesome though.

This is the sort of performance that gives one hope for the human race.

It's only just struck me now that Croft is a coloratura tenor (and not just a tenor who can sing coloratura), in the mold of Jadlowker. Awesome.

If they think Belmonte is boring, that's just cos they can't sing him right. :D

I thought I was going to melt around minute 2:05. This could not be more gorgeous. Richard Croft fantastic, as usual.

It's really quick. Personally, I'd sing it slower, and make Belmonte a little more brooding and anxious as opposed to nervous and ardent.
It's good, though. It's an interesting take on the character.
g4thz 3 years ago
I think most singers who take it slower than that do it because they can't do the coloratura that quickly.

Belmonte is not a boring character - at least not for me, a listener.
His and Konstanze's arias are jewels in the history of the opera!
