Yeah ABS on my Terrain has saved my ass a few times lol. It feels weird though, your tire feel like their grinding sort of and your brake pedal hits the floor lol
I want see you do that at 80 mph, at rain , in a road full of holes, while you are with a half of the car at the side of the track (that is made of gravel), while you are trying to deflect
from a drunk truck driver in you lane passing another truck, and riding a 1 point NCAP car loaded. Welcome to Brazil folks !
The modern ABS apply the higest ammount of power possible to the brakes, when the tyre locks, the pressure lifts up. I would love to see you make a shorter stop without ABS. You cant brake with full power= Lockup and manually lift of and push down the brake, right, or brake with less than 100% braking power. The ABS do lock up for a short time, but since the ABS controll all tyres, 3out of 4 could still brake perfectly.
This has saved me from a 40 MPH mile crash by a construction zone(there was gravel scattered on the road) and prevented me from hitting the side of another car whos driver was a 70 year old woman. She pulled out in front of us while we were real close and my car weighs 3,600 Lbs. But still most people slam hard on the brakes, and are the people in the video hitting the clutch as well?
2:22 this is the trick used to market ABS... only an ass would slam the brakes and lock the wheels like that... people that know how to drive would use threshold braking which will stop the car in a shorter distance than ABS brakes...
ABS doesn't shorten braking distance at all... it only makes the car more controllable - thus more safe - during hard braking on the expense of braking distance
@mmamdouh75 In adittion, not all da drivers on the world knows that or reacts like u mention in case of emergency. As @renold4u says, in case of panic it would safe your life ;)
@renold4u Certainly. I would say I'm a better than average driver, and when I'm fully aware, I can stop a non-ABS car in the same distance as one with ABS. The thing is, in a panic situation/sudden unexpected stop, it is human nature to just jab the brakes and hold on. A couple weeks ago someone cut me off while I was still accelerating: I locked them up; thankfully I had sense to let off when the car started to go sideways to avoid a wreck, but I still flatspotted 4 brand new Michelins. :/
@renold4u this video is more of a marketing video. There are videos around that show how ABS isn't stopping you earlier, just safer. Even drive-training instructors would tell you that you can't expect the car to stand still faster, just that the ABS makes it more controllable. In corners it would be good, but if you know how to threshold brake, you are okay as well. I drive a car without ABS everyday, but ofcourse I still notice myself blocking wheels sometimes, but it's definitely not too bad.
True enough, but when a dog jumps out on the road in front of you your concentration won't be on threshold braking, it will be on "OH CRAP!", which is why ABS works. The driver just slams the brake, looks for an exit and steers towards a safer path. It's true that threshold braking would likely stop you sooner, but the number of people who would be able to do that in an emergency is pretty slim.
@mmamdouh75 Do you really think an average normal human being in a panic situation will think O shit let me use threshold braking to not slam into that truck over there....... No
@mmamdouh75 ABS DOES shorten the distance, it applies the maximum amount of braking without locking up the tire(s) Can you do this without ABS? Of course but its hard as hell.
@mmamdouh75 If many people end up having to brake heavily, such as in traffic, if everyone has the slightest bit more control, they can not only steer their car to a more predictable halt, but predict the braking and steer of others. In everyday driving, it's better everyone have ABS on. The option for ABS off would be nice too but save it for a track or more private setting.
@mmamdouh75 lol marketing abs... if you are driving, and somehting happens on the road, like, for example, a truck crashing and crossing the road, anyone will be scared, and the first thing you'll do is slam the brakes, is not about being an ass, you just dont have to worry about the breaking. you just press the pedal, and the abs will do the work for you. abs mantain the wheels on the edge of slippery, the fastest way stopping is using abs..or maybe is faster to block the wheels and crash...
@mmamdouh75 If you are on a highway and a truck just crash and cross the road anyone would freak out. Dont pretend to be a Raikkonen. I'll ask you the same thing form a diferent angle. Assuming you are an experienced driver, and you are on a small road. There is another person driving, but hes not so skilled. Now imagine the 2nd guy step on a huge rock and ends up on your lane. The only way to avoid crashing both of you must stop. Would you be thankful if he had ABS? be honest...
@Rydn i don't pretend to be Raikkonen or have a huge experience that would allow me to escape any accident... i had my share of accidents just like anyone else... i am just stressing the fact that ABS is not a device that make miracles happen... if your stopping distance is not enough you will crash... doesn't matter if you have ABS or not...
@Rydn i am trying to make people aware that what they see on vids like that is deceiving as the comparison is not fare... they are comparing a wrong application of brakes to ABS thus making people think that ABS will shorten the stopping distance regardless of anything else thus making ABS look like a miracle creator rather than a driver aid
i do appreciate ABS as well as other driver aid devices but i just hate promoting them wrongly to people and make them think they do things they doesn't
@mmamdouh75 You are somewhat right, but the proper thing to do, in my opinion is to aim to non skilled drivers when they market ABS. People like you who know how to brake will just ignore that. Anyhow, its just a fact that ABS provides the shortest possible brake distance. Maybe you can get it as shorter as abs being skilled at breaking, thats true. I'll just get ABS, it much easier to me to slam the brakes, and i know i would be scared as shit when a crash happens on the road.
@mmamdouh75 Actually you're horribly wrong... You ain't a machine and can't control the wheel traction and wheel locking nearly as precisely as an ABS computer. In a straight line braking, no human can stop quicker without an ABS system than compared to having it.
@mmamdouh75 Didn't find the video you talked about. Also in theory, it's not even possible to be more efficient on a surface that the ABS isn't malfunctioning. It's just basic physics calculations to figure this all out. Unless the ABS is malfunctioning, it's not possible for a human to break more efficiently than the ABS computer, assuming of course the ABS computer is ideal in it's performance.
if you look at how ABS works you will find it cutting braking power once wheels lock and then let the brake pressure build up till a wheel lock then cut the pressure again and so on so forth... this means ABS will be flicking around the optimum braking power in a rapid rate thus you are not full time braking at the optimum point and that makes the difference between ABS vs no ABS
@sampsalol threshold braking is 100% at the optimum point thus it will be shorter than ABS braking... the problem is that it needs really skilled driver to apply it and road conditions will severely affect how how often you get it right... needless to say it will be hard to do in a panic situation if you are not used to this type of braking so with all things being even you are in a much safer position having ABS.. but it is important to know that ABS won't cut your braking distance by 50% or so
@mmamdouh75 So how come a car with ABS has a shorter stopping distance? ABS works the same as you use thresold distance, but lowers the pressure(lifting off the pedal) and apllying it (pushing down) faster. Name one car that can stop shorter without ABS.
@Jimpank90 the answer i: it doesn't... go back to the vid and you will find all comparisons are done through comparing full locked brakes vs. ABS brakes... surly the ABS will be shorter... if you do the same comparison with threshold baking you will find that the ABS is longer... ABS does lock the brakes intermittently thus a little skid is involved... that is not part of threshold braking
@mmamdouh75 my father as a driver almost 30 years, he had 5 crashes... and all of his cars had no ABS. He is very experienced, but in real life there is not time or thinking when something suddenly jumps infront of ur car.. You just slam on ur brakes. There is no "Slow-mo" in real world.
