I'm a retired Chief Petty Officer. I've read John's book 3 times. I've seen this movie twice. I've also read the book "Into the Mouth of the Cat" & read the story of "The Incredibly Stupid One". I have personally met the Medal of Honor Recipients that know John. To put everything into prespective, one man's character is judged by those who had the most influence on one's life in the most trying of times. Leadership is earned, not bought. The movie is...lighter than the book. It was made for TV, and thus couldn't be too gory. For instance, in the book, McCain's broken leg from the knee down was twisted up at a very unnatural angle, something they couldn't easily replicate in a TV film. There is a scene in this moive that is based on a propaganda video, but the orinigal footage is much more powerful:
