  • @hanzithaking Sorry to reply to such an old comment, but no, a ton of gold would still be gold.

    It's red in water because of the charge that was introduced changing the size of the individual atoms, not because of the amount of gold atoms that were in contact with each other.

  • So you know how science teachers would always give the example of a physical change by ripping a piece of paper into smaller and smaller bits and say its still a piece of paper, does that mean if you did the same thing to a piece of gold it would eventually become a chemical change, or is it still physical change?

  • What do you mean by "the particles are given a charge"? Does that bottle have a net charge? Does the water also have a charge? Why doesn't the gold discharge?

  • @Envergure If each nanoparticle in that sample has a +1 charge with no counterbalancing, the particles in the sample would repel each other to a degree on the scale of nuclear bombs, I'm guessing. I guess each nanoparticle has a +5 to + 20 charge and the solution itself is quite basic (with a lot of OH-)

    No, it is the properties of the material not whether there is air about which makes the difference.

  • harvesting gold from the sea would backfire economically.

    No matter how secret you try to keep it, the news that gold is pouring out of somewhere would set off an espionage war to dwarf that over the atomic bomb.

    Eventually everyone would know how to do it. Then the supply of gold will explode and cheapen it. Then all these currencies based on gold during the early 1900s would crash. Causing a worse depression than what happened.

  • Great video and enjoyed Moriaty he obviously takes a great interest in what he speaks about. it was interesting to think about how perhaps elsewhere in the universe perhaps there is a world where gold is in fact red, or blue just due to a difference in how its composed. Its just a shame that a great video about the properties of gold has to have some comments left by people who obviously lack proper socialization (WW2's victor or whatever is not the topic take your nonsense elsewhere).

  • Why couldn't this have come out half a year ago? I wrote a research report on how changing the radii of gold nanoparticles changed the colour of the solution. Nothing would've made me happier than referencing the periodic table of videos!

  • Fritz Haber is a very interesting historical figure. He was a brilliant scientist and a nationalist, who'd do anything to server Germany, be it fertiziler or poisonous gas. And he was of the Jewish faith. It is a good thing he died in 1934, knowledge of what came later would have ripped his hearth in two.

  • @Intervene I don't think so because the gold in video was dissolved in a liquid

  • @Intervene Actually no. That's because by melting gold, you are simply changing the physical status of the metal. When melted, gold molecules are still bound together, so they react with light in the same way than solid gold do. In a nano-colloid you have a suspension of groups of gold molecules so small you can't see them to the naked eye. But each of these groups is separeted from the others, so can react with light in a different way.
