The real purpose for using fingerpicks is so the instrument can be played Firmly. (Loud)

You get in a string band (particularly one with a banjo) you REALLY have to be able to dig in and play Firmly to be heard.

Having (or not having) fingerpicks has no effect on speed. Speed comes with practice.

@325Chuck355 I know what lap steel is, I play dobro, I play lapstyle/lapsteel and this is not lap steel, this is more bottle neck. Actually, it is bottle neck slide. Lapsteel is more associated with guitars played flat on the lap with a steel, meaning a metal slide that you hold in your hand as opposed to one put on the finger. And this isn't even the right technique for bottle neck slide if you want to make that argument, at least it's not the commonly used technique, this is his own technique.

Hi. Apart from D G D G B D, you've also got D A D F# A D. Both these are very common and great for sliding. In particular if you're playing blues style. (that is playing the guitar the "correct" way and adding some slide now and again).

I also noticed he uses the bottleneck type of slide instead of the bar, which is basically a hunk of metal with grooves for your fingers and thumb. I'll have to try one of those bottlenecks.
