@MsSharpie05 It isn't. It's just an optical illusion caused by the boat moving so fast (it's like when you get a bike moving really fast and the wheels appear to be moving backwards).

This version of the scene doesn't show it, but before the tunnel Veruca says she wants a boat like this one: "A beautiful paddle boat, that's what I want!" But then the scariness of the ride convinces her: "Daddy, I do NOT want a boat like this!" At least that was one thing she did reconsider.

This scene gave me the absolute creeps as a small child (heck, I still find it creepy, but at least now it doesn't actually scare me!). Among the many things I've never understood about this scene is this: Willy went ballistic over Augstus contaminating his river...but then he turns around and actually encourages Mrs. Teevee to get sick into said river by giving her rainbow drops (that make you spit in seven different colors)!

As a Manson fan, I'm glad I finally fully understand where the "Prelude" to "Portrait of an American Family" came from and the environment that the Dope Hat's video is in. I'd seen the whole movie before, except this scene. I think TV channels usually cut it out for being too disturbing for small children.
