can you stain these guitars and not paint them? is the wood good enough for that? i have a grandson that was born in september and i thought about building him his first guitar.
You can't stain them. There is some kind of a wood sealant on them. I tried staining mine and it didnt soak in. I sanded it down but it was still all splotchy. so i just decided to paint it.
hi l have just bought the same kit did it all go together well l am sending mine off to have it air brushed but l will be using seymore duncan 1959 pickups l think the machine heads seam ok unless you have any thoughts
regards
allan l wil also post a video of the construction
Your right of course. My original plan was to build from scratch but I thought id try a kit first. I hope you recorded what you did? I'd like to see how you got on. Have you published any pictures of the finished guitar?
very nice build and finnish but em its nice and all but its kinda cheating ... this year i built my own les paul from what i could find eg. the maple top was made from recycled floor boards and also i made the neck myself it took forever to build but seeing blocks of wood turn into a guitar is really building one ... but that said i really love the paint job its really nicely done so well done on your project!!
thats really not that bad, ive played a silertone strat copy, that was 13 peice PLYWOOD, traded a zippo for it, then traded the strat for an ibanez acoustic lol
its fairly easy. Part 1 - From cardboard, cut out the basic shape of your body. Then reduce the whole thing by 2 inches. Then get some of those pin tacks used for sticking notices onto cork boards to give you about a 1/2 inch gap under your template.
part 2 - Stick them through your template pin side down and place it over your guitar body (see my vid I did it back to front first time !!). Spray around the body keeping the same angle and distance as you work around it. I used black for the under tone colour. you shoud see an nice even band of black around your guitar body fading as it nears teh middel. Over spray the whole thing with your chosen colour and you should see a nice burst effect.
I tried to do that and eventually my guitar neck broke. You could still try. The nice thing though is i could still drill through the wood filler and use it as a bolt on
Sounds good to me. Its a good solid construction and the pickups seam fine. You can always replace these if you want. Setup is upto you I found the construction was pretty good and I had little work to do to get the action the way I liked it.
some burst help? so basicly you put tacks upright and put paper over the body paint the sides black and then paint over the whole thing whatever color you want?? is this how its done? id apreciate your help dude u might have not inteded it but you educated me alot
Remember to put the pins point down so the spray doesn't show up the tack head (lesson learnt for me). I used car spray and found it was easy to get the effect using black and the blue I selected. Near the centre beyond the burst you can see the tiger stripes of the veneer which is the effect you should be after so pick a colour that is a little translucent.
I did. I looked at using wood stains but after some research I found the easiest method was to use regular car spray. Theres a great selection to choose from too.
I used car paint. Black gloss to sunburst the edge then a metalic poseidon blue to finish which left the middle a little transparent to allow the veneer grain to show through. Then finished it off with a few layers of laquer.
Well if you're patient it will take a 1/4 of the time I took. Getting the paint on is easy, 1-2 days. Its the laquer. You have to let it set 1-2 days just isnt long enough. 2-3 weeks as a minimum. Trust me if you dont when you polish it up you'll find you pick up dings and nicks so fast.

saga = fail.
You may have got a good kit, which is lucky, 1 in a milion lucky. Its very rare to get good things from saga.
Also, what is that? A 10 piece body?

would it be okay if i seal the wholes with puddy and glue the neck instead??
acousticlv 3 years ago
i guess but it wouldnt really matter because your still getting the same amount of wood-to-wood contact unless u route into the pickup area
relhek1 3 years ago
I tried to do that and eventually my guitar neck broke. You could still try. The nice thing though is i could still drill through the wood filler and use it as a bolt on
FloorSox 3 years ago
honestly, not a big fan of bolt on even though i own 2 bolt on but thats another story
acousticlv 3 years ago
i wouldnt, strings cause a lot of tension
Guitarzan13 3 years ago
hmm.... what if i route out the pickup cavity part and glue another piece to neck to get longer wood to glue?
acousticlv 3 years ago
thank you that's the best photo's I've seen of these kits yet...

are the materials quite good in these kits?
CipollaErMeyo 3 years ago
None. Its very easy to put together. Even the wiring is made very easy.
wardt999 3 years ago
did you have any major problems with the build?
conor1148 3 years ago
Hi, im thinking of doing something similar, using a kit to build a les paul junior. Can i ask, did you use any wood primer?
SouthBankOwen 3 years ago
No, the the wood is sealed using some form of epoxy filler I think. Once cleaned up to get rid of the excess residue its ready for anything.

Nice one, thanks.
