  • This song would be a lot better if he didnt use that whiny singing in the middle of the song. That " i need you to hold on to" part 1:50 he didnt need to say it whining. He should stick to yelling and sounding angry. Theres enough bands whining.

  • The 8 people who disliked this are still believing the terrible lie.

  • From 3:28 onward - I could listen to that all day and never get tired of it.

  • can this world really be as sad as it seems?

  • Cool!

  • God, his voice is sexy. I love this band, so much.

  • @InternalPeace93 You inlove with Trent Rezner??

  • The original PHM album has a certain sound the 2010 remaster does not. I dunno it is not so loud. Not that he remaster sounds bad, because it is a sweet ass upgrade. It sounds like a brand new NIN album IMO. NIN fans and new fans alike can now experience the album with a new clairty and the albums message is much more aggressive since the sound is more in your face.

  • They've been playing this on 106.7 KBPI lately :)

Been making me happy, even though I hardly listen to the radio.

  • A very estimable album but the production hasn't aged well!

  • Found this CD right after joining the Navy. Used to listen to this while studying weapons and submarines. Many long hours spent with NIN.

  • Oneof the best albums ever! Not a bad song on the entire cd!

  • one song and everyone is now a scholar -__-

  • A rare perfect CD

  • my 3 yr old loves this song. I have hope for the next generation.

  • TERRIBLE LIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This should be in 480p

  • Trent Reznor is the reason I started writing poetry etc., Layne Stayley is the reason I started singing. Trents lyrics are F'n unbelievable, poetry in motion....he sings about my life, pain, depression and struggles...

  • @WDHJR2007

    Get over it you noob.

  • @WDHJR2007 in a way, Layne sings about pain, depression and struggles too.

  • I'm thinking half you idiots commenting on this weren't even around when he was writing the shit. It's about abandonment of beliefs, and abandonment of a god (i think u owe me a great big apology). It's about the hypocrisy religion is, (your promises, your promises and lies) He wants a concrete belief, all he's given is the disillusionment of an omnipotent god.."Lost my ignorance, security and pride" (lost belief, and the false security and pride it brought)

  • how can religion ber so poisonous, for sure the makers of religion are sick minded people losers of life that's because they hate it. to be honest there are no words for them. it's disgusting and sick to the extreme. people think religion is not designed , that is like a normal evolution of society or something. actually it was, but since christianity appeared it stopped to be it. people cannot handle the true porpoise of this religion of compassion and lies. actually is too lame. too bad.

  • @jcliveron shut the fuck you nine year old now u will never get laid dumbass

  • @jcliveron True porpoise? Do you mean Flipper or the singing ones from Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy?

  • @grimmorrigan HAHAHA!

  • I Blast nine. especially when it is crummy rap being played. bad lyrics- no flow of the rap. I got bass to. 80's thash is fun also. metal.

  • This album is great!! Trents writing is just out of this world. Just a talent all around

  • When you don't have God or religion to get through tough times, you have NIN.

  • "Hey, God..." literally, so powerful to me, that little statement in itself is a shining example of trent reznors wrighting prowess to me.

  • classic NIN

  • industrial + energy

  • this will probably sound insane, but Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (a totally duff ps1 game) got me into industrial, not because NIN were on the soundtrack, but because it's got some really atmospheric & industrial sounds- Finish Him!

  • @hellbadger84 There wasn't a NIN track in MK:mythologies.

  • all feeling and rawness...

  • 7 ppl who disliked this song made a 'Terrible Lie'.

  • Sounds a lot like Skinny Puppy and Ministry.

You guess he hanged over with both of them.

  • my song to my husband making me go through broken lies

  • @MsFunky4u God be with you (lol)

  • Pretty Hate Machine is the best NIN record made!! Thanks to this song :)

  • Old Nin>New Nin

  • I love the eighties "sound feeling" !

  • It is as sad as it seems.....cant wait for it all to be over!!!

  • I've just split up from a woman I've been with for a little over 2 years. Everything had been going great and we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. Then, she fell in with a religious crowd and all of a sudden broke up with me because she now believes god is telling her we're not meant for each other. These people have distorted her mind and ruined our relationship. Religion is poison. Terrible lie, indeed. It felt good to hear this song right now.

  • @zian1977c

80s alternative, not the same as 90s alternative

  • Years, months, days, hours, seconds and I'm back for my therapy..

  • im on my hands and knees, i want so much to believe

    god is a terrible lie

  • I was happy enough to see NiN's last (I hope Trent changes his mind lol) gig, which took place in Poznan, Pl... I've seen many, but he's the only one who sings live so perfect you could suspect playback if you didn't know better....

  • @w00ysiah....and we all believe Poland WILL get cured from the evil-mafia-like Catholick church one day. AMEN.

  • trent resnor is a musical genius -he truly is a gift -he truly is what his music is-amazing

  • i love this fuking song!!!!! i just cant get enough of it...

  • @zian1977c Industrial

  • i love nin so much fuck it

  • fuck u

  • Trent Reznor is a unique vocalist and musician.

  • I dedicate this song to My Government because it's one big terrible lie. Fuck you Obama .

  • Love the 'industrialness' about NiN and the many layers within...thank you Trent...

  • My fave NIN album XD

  • I used to listen to this album and when I'd start thinking "fuck you trent, you don't know pain" I'd go outside and cheer myself up.

  • fucking amazing , had forgotten how so brilliant trent was and maybe still is !!!

  • One time i was driving and i wasnt listening to the radio for once and I saw this guy singing his heart out to this song and I have to say it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

  • @milhousezchick I wish that more people would blast NIN on their car stereos than the people blasting rap in their cars so loud that their windshields are cracked and your ears start to bleed and you want to scream!

  • @hiracktoman9 i blast nin outta my car :) so i'm helping the cause!

  • @hiracktoman9 Once I was in a parking lot and one guy was blasting Disturbed. I think that is the closest I will get to hearing NIN from another car.

  • @TheDestinyDragoon Haven't drove past me yet!

  • @hentaichibi True :D

  • @hiracktoman9 can this world really be as sad as it seems. I mean really. blasting rap! Thats just lame!

  • @hiracktoman9 funny you mention that, because ever since I was little my dad's been blasting a downward spiral in our car.

  • @hiracktoman9 I remeber blasting skinny puppy driving in up in the east bay, really funny experience, got a lot of weird looks

  • @hiracktoman9 i do NIN ALL DAY EVERYDAY

  • @hiracktoman9 I used to blast Ween

  • @hiracktoman9 Have you heard the bass lows on terrible lie? I can't even turn the treble down without a black hole opening up, and sucking up all that is truly terrible down.

  • @hiracktoman9 That's what my buddy and i do alllll the time. Industrial=badass driving.

  • @hiracktoman9 You should hang out with me and my bf, we do this a lot. Everytime car comes up next to us blaring rap, we out in NIN or Tool or Slipknot and turn it up as loud as it'll go.

  • @TheVampiressLisa I do the same thing!!! Blare out the crap!!

  • its amazing how they sound remakably like inxs

  • wow....to me this song sounds so angry for its time. Great song though xD

  • honestly not that good but still a good song. NIN 4-EVER

  • this is my favorite NIN song ever. i heard it on the radio as i was on a road trip yesterday and was reminded of how much i LOVE IT.. still have this album on TAPE :))

  • God I can't wait to get stoned and listen to this. Good shit, good shit.

  • @PatrickJMiskimon i bet you're a 12 year old kid xD

  • @poorscoobydoo no, I'm 18. so what the hell are you talkin about?

  • hey god !!!!!!

  • This song is perfectly epitomizes my struggle to finally break free of religion a few years ago. It was a terrible lie that I had a hard time seeing through. Judging by the lyrics, I believe Trent wrote this song because he was struggling with his break from religion as well.

  • @TheSwinePrincess Uhm, no, it, like all the other songs on here, are about drugs...

  • @Wasserkaktus I think you need to read the lyrics. The whole song is written as a letter to God.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheSwinePrincess Great news! in my humble opinion religion is the wall that separates us from our fellow humans and causes segregation...etc and ever worse is of course.... War....

  • i thought he said "Take a line" ?

Then i went back and thought wtfkk

    its Terrible Lie xP

this is a kickass by NIN ♥

  • @cruenikkisixx lmao take a line

  • @cruenikkisixx Misheard lyrics +1

  • I always thought he was saying "tow the line" in the chorus. Oh well both make sense to me now.

  • I live a lie, I am a lie. In a a pink cloud of oblivion hides a monster who want's to kill you all. I was made to love and so I hurt everyone. I exist to create and so I destroy. Destruction is such a lovely thing. It's so easy to forget yourself and then there is no coming back. I still fight for my innocence even thou I lost it a long time ago. My biggest enemy is my own brain. Don't tell me you name I will forget it -just like every unpleasant thing I have ever encounter.

  • I always come back to this, always

  • Hurt was the first music video i seen, back in 95. My parents didnt have cable but my uncle did. And then i asked him for NIN material and he had this cassete tape of pretty hate machine . This album helped me and still does through life...

  • my mom and her sisters (my aunts) love this song,

they used to play it for me all the time when I was a little kid...

  • The song makes me start to think about one specific thing. Why so many of us have to suffer emotionally and psychically, differently. When we think our problems are horrible, there are others who suffer far more worse than what we could imagine. And sometimes, no matter what we do, we feel the problem will remain.

  • Boo Cha Cha

  • I'm 13, me and my best friend love Nine Inch Nails, we're the only people at our school who listen to it...

  • @MirandaWinn I love nine inch nails and I'm 14. Nobody else listens to them and they kick ass!

  • @Manlund dude you described my life :o

  • @Manlund Mee too! XD

  • i love entropy.

    this song rox.

my emotional state is like this song.

  • This whole album wants to make me skullfuck things.

  • @anthrax1991 Hahahahaha

  • @anthrax1991 Hey, atleast when I die I got something to look forward too?

  • thanks Jiidai for this album. Talk about memories!..... especially intimate ones lol. I also love Ministry! Another great industrial punk band x x

  • Was going through deep depression, college was breaking down, relationship breaking down. Had this track on my stereo system. I remember there was a thunder storm and i had a J and a lot of alcohol. I know this track will relate to a lot of people. But this song relates to me like nothing you know. And I didn't even know much myself. Thank You Trent... fucking.. thank you man...

  • @stabbingmeagain you realize this song is about religion not a girl. right?

  • @theverenduschuck who cares

  • @Jess712712712 obviously you

  • @theverenduschuck Didn't you read what he said?

"she fell in with a religious crowd and all of a sudden broke up with me because she now believes god is telling her we're not meant for each other"

    How isn't that related?

  • @stabbingmeagain

haha freeing the mind is the best!

  • @stabbingmeagain Me too , I was alone for the firs time in my life , and the guy that gave me a ride to work was blasting this one day . I bought it . I hope you're feeling better , now ...

  • @stabbingmeagain Fuck. Yes. I can totally feel you on that. Recently I've had people and their damn double standards expect me to be tolerant of their crazy when they won't forgive me when I apologize profusely for things said in anger. It's bullshit. This song...Helps me get through their deception and lies.

  • @stabbingmeagain Aren't lies and abandonment worse than the harsh truth, especially if you try to make repairs???

  • Perfect angst music for the "X Generation"

  • My best friend and I use to play this album as our soundtrack in what middle school?!

Trent Reznor is the Ray Charles of this generation, period!

  • It's not okay to "explain" what songs are about and stick to it. Songs are like paintings, the listener decides what it is about.

  • Ive owed a Pretty Hate Machine....

  • you must have a unique and uncanny sense of beats to do that.

  • this is giving me a 9inch boner (& I don't even have 9inches)

  • I also a 75 man my older brother bought the album cos he liked the artwork, said hey bro listen to this, man defined my world form 91 onwards listen to these tunes at work home and play will never forgot those years to this albulm thanks bro

  • sexy :)

  • I really have to say that I've come to enjoy the live version on "and all the could have been" a lot more. anyone else?

  • I was born 75, but i discovered this Record 21 Years after Release...

my first NIN Record was "With Teeth" - but this one is much better - where have it been so long.... :-)

  • 3: 28 = Alternative Miami Vice theme

  • well then never wisen up a chump, nobody gives a fuck about ur existence or your musical preferences to help you get through...the society you live in is a fucking lie and you are left to rot in emptiness

  • @plastickilberty1 I'm 16 and my friends and I are keeping this music going :) We live in Scotland and its really quite sad because the masses are missing out on something amazing. I totally agree that it's not around anymore, but thats why we need to musically educate the next generation and what not. In my opinion NIN should be compulsory on every music playing device.

  • you should start hitting yourself in the face, tell me how it feels in 15 years.

  • hey hate to be the nazi dictator here but all you pathetic losers need to stop replying to eachothers stupid im drunk or high comments on youtube

  • @tool404 ???

  • @NeuSwabiaPanzerwaffe you're slow

  • @tool404 What do this imply?? You have a penis, or something

  • @NeuSwabiaPanzerwaffe lol r u serious?

  • @tool404 ...So, you got a penis or what?

  • @mercifulkyle no, i dont

  • @tool404 Sweet lol

  • @tool404 I do not know...

  • Trent understands letting the song say what it needs to say...he's not in a hurry to get right to the climax....he's a patient lover....thats why this music delivers every time.

  • listen to "dig it" of skinny puppy and then listen this song again..

  • Reznor is fucking god!!!In agreement to the 1st comment on here, yes, our generation has produced the best music and far better than these trashy ass young fucks ever will!!!

  • @demonsweat138 You must be like 50 or something now....huh.. huh.. huh?

  • the music produced by my generation sucks but every decade or so the scene changes so here soon someone's gonna come along and change everything, its overdue

  • @dictatorpepper I second that ; )

  • @Polyfusia doo d. im not a noob man. the new bands are fuckin tools is the problem. i really wish i could find a bass player. i skull fuck the record exec and then piss in his eye socket after having my way with his wife.

  • Can't express how much I love this song. Perfection.

  • @Technochick95 Yeah I love this tune too. I think it always sounds 10 times better live though

  • gosh.. the sounds of my childhood .... soooooooooooo fucking good .. was born in 83... where is this sound today ????? hahaha ... joke .. right ..?? its cause it doesnt exist anymore ... i remember rocking back and forth on my mom and dads porch .. where i grew up .. southern Louisiana... yeah cajuns actually know good music .. but question ??? where can i find more of this today???? as of now just sticking to this album..,. back in player .. lol... who agrees?

  • @plastickliberty1 i was born in 84

  • @plastickliberty1 This song gets played on the radio all the time where I'm from.

  • @spawn22222 Are you from Heaven?

  • @plastickliberty1 Dear God, Please bring back ALL of the greats that sadly left this earth, and you can have Bieber, and all those guys. Amen.

  • @JessicaAntoinetteUK Alright! Geez! I wasn't nitpicking. I was just asking. I wasn't sure. The r is what threw me off.

I appreciate the answer, though. I am SO much less confused now.

  • @Bandaids4ever That's okay :)

  • @JessicaAntoinetteUK You could try shortening your sentences rather than your words, so that people can know what the fucking you're writing. Better yet you could refrain from posting, since nothing I could interpret in that long-winded paragraph was particularly interesting. Just pretentious whining from another teen who blindly idealizes the past and thinks s/he should have been born earlier, right?

  • @xreddragonx Why not :) I'm 16 now and a little more mature... must say though this was a while ago... fancy dropping the topic grammar nazi? Cheers. Oh and my boyfriend is 26 nearly 27... sick right :) Thanks for you input, really value it...

  • @Bandaids4ever Dunno... But I know what a Billy Bob is.

  • @plastickliberty1 ya i def agree, there are very minamal bands out there still performing good hits today like this one, this album will certainly go down as being one of the best ever
