I'm a surgical physician assistant. After completing my highly competitive master's degree in medical sciences, I am now nationally board certified, licensed to practice in two states, see my own patients, and write prescriptions. My starting salary my first year out of school making six figures. You sir, are an idiot.
PA's are highly skilled and highly trained medical providers.
PA's start at 75k per year for a brand new grad with no experience
PA's top out at around 175K for fields like CT surgery
PA's are not merely 'assistants' and in fact in my state we can write Schedule II-VI drugs, and manage every aspect of patient care. We are in fact the future of medicine in this country
Dang, for all of these really rude responses I bet no one really watched the entire video. He actually says "...and that's not to be confused with a Physician Assistant..." (time 1:10). I am a Pre-PA student so trust me I DO know the difference between the two in order to prepare for the interview and my career. At the beginning my feathers were ruffled too but if you watch the entire thing he does clarify. I guess all the more reason to encourage the name change from assistant to associate.
I am an independent surgical PA-C, and I collected $180,000.00 last year. Don't be taken advantage of, surgeons are making big money off their PA's, and working them like slaves. Know what your bringing into the practice, and have a structured bonus plan, not an empty promise.
I'm sure that was after 4 years of attaining a Bachelors of Science Degree first (in a related, or similar field)... Because you need to have Master's Degree level of education now to practice as a Physician Assistant (Surgical or Medical).
I am a certified surgical technologist and it is not the same thing as a surgical physician's assistant and we perform way more dutiies than "holding instruments for surgeons".
hey i questions plsss i beg you to help me i want to be a surgical tech i want to know how long they go to school and and what is the starting salary will i be able to find a job after school can i continue my education to a surgical assistant or something plss help mei beg you
WOW! This guy is way off! A surgical physician assistant requires a Master's degree which takes a minimum of 6 years to obtain. They practice medicine under a physician. They diagnose and treat disease and prescribe medicine. He seems to be describing an OR tech in the video.
Actually, a Surgical Physician Assistant is a Physician Assistant who specializes in Surgery. They can assist and perform surgery in the presence of a surgeon. For example, they may do vein harvesting in preparation for cardiac surgery. What Dr. Cathcart is decribing could be a non-physician surgical assistant as well as a surgical technician. Also, the first photo shown is actually an invasive cardiovascular technician working with the doctor in the cath lab.

PA programs offer certificates (if you already have a BS), BS in PA, or MS.. you dont NEED a MS, but I think I know what you mean..

This dude is TOTALLY wrong. A surgical technician and a PA-C (Surgical) are very different. And their pay is ALSO very different.
To FIX Dr. Dumbass's crappy vid:
Surg. Tech. Schooling - 2-4 years
Surg. Tech. Pay - $35-45,000.00 annually
Surgical PA-C Schooling - you need a MASTERS degree (about 6 yrs)
Surgical PA-C pay - Anywhere between $65,000 and $200,000.00 annually.
