Ya know, NightFlyyer....you sound like a very insightful person. I watched one of your other videos on the Vintage Hirobo gas heli that you restored. That was impressive as well as the Hammerhead. I am a rookie-novice-beginner...whatever you wanna call it and I sure do wish that I had someone like you around here (NE Indiana) that I could call upon with questions. I hope you do more videos. I'm lookin for them. Thanks! Oh, and my wife was impressed with the Hammerhead, too :-)
@NightFlyyer Great stuff! very impressive. Just wondering weather you had any experience with the Walkera Lama 3 collective pitch Contra-rotating heli, and if you did, what where your opinions on it? I'm wanting to get back into heli's after a few years of not flying them, so looking for a suitable beginner heli that can handle a slight breeze outside. any suggestions much appreciated.
NASA copied your counter balanced single rotor design and multiplied it times six! Check out "NASA Samarai hybrid-electric VTOL personal-aircraft concept" The channel name is Woracle.
One thing about watching your videos Dave, you're either making me jealous with your flying (and WHAT you're flying) or astounding me with how you're getting something to fly. LOL.
Thanks for another "well I didn't think it was possible" video.
Your videos are appreciated. Wish more people had your old-school mentality instead of being closed minded only to those ideas/thoughts fed to them by the subjective junk on TV.
I love your single blade videos. The concept is so interesting. I did have to cover the right side of my screen during this video. I just could not stand the Obama ad looking me right in the eye.
it seemed like that the heli had a lot of vibration, did you check that the balance of the blade and the hamer were equally far away from the center?
if not than it may cause a lot of vibration since the blade gets more force at different rpms than the hamer, and vibration can loosen screws and stuff can come loose, like the hamer....
Another great asset to your hangar Dave, must be getting crowded in your garage though, but I gues you will always find space to squeeze in another model or 2 lol
Wow, a hammerhead as a counter weight makes it pretty obvious how dangerous a bigger heli is. great video! HAMMERHEAD! invented by Dave H. another 5*****
Holy crap, that thing had some crazy vibration. Can see @ 2:35... it's torquing from the tip of the canopy to the tail rotor!
You may have balanced the phyiscal weight of the rotor blade and hammer together, but the problem is you are pitching the hammer head along with the rotor (along with the fact the weight is so off center, among many others...). You need to figure out a way to modify the swashplate to keep the hammer head constant level at zero pitch while the one rotor blade pitches.
@thechoosendude Thanks. I simply proved it would work. It was time consuming to balance, but it took right off. Someone else can fine tune it if they want. I just am experimenting you know.
@thechoosendude I am still balancing, you know, and it takes time. It was the maiden flight! At speed the blade and the hammer weigh the same! My other helis are very smooth with one blade, but I spent more time. I just wanted to see if it worked, you know. And in Nam, we got on helis that were throwing parts, missing parts and vibrating like crazy, but still flew, and getting shot at at the same time. Now that was Dangerous.
Nice fireflies at the end! Your videos always cheer me up! I would have liked to see you use a coconut instead of a hammer! Just because that's how the professor from Gilligan's Island would have done it!!
@desidudes78 Thank you for your concern, however after talking to the Physics teachers, they say the reason it works is because it is balanced. And at speed, that lead weighted rotor blade weighs the same as the hammer, which is also spinning a lot slower.Getting shot at in Vietnam, Korea, Afganistan or Iraq and getting on completely shot up Huey helis with parts flying off was much more dangerous to me than this simple 1/2 lb hammer that is not spinning that fast on the inside.
Looks like the torque was still a little off comparing it to the blade side because it looked like it was still shaking a little bit. Still pretty cool this can be done if you know a little physics.
hmm You don't realise how heavy a blade is until you have to counter it with a hammer head. Not to mention the damage they will do if either comes flying off the blade grips.
My thoughts:
- Isn't the single blade supposed to be longer than stock to ensure same lift is created given the same headspeed?
- lift generated just on one blade would mean the single blade grip now has to support the entire heli instead of sharing it with the other grip. This equals more stress for the grip=dangerous
@ourplaypen Im no armchair pilot. I try things myself. At speed the blade and the hammer weigh the same! It'd be more likely for the blade to fly off than the hammer, as its solidly attached with a safety strap. It spins slower than the lifting part of the lead weighted blade. In theory, the blade should be longer, but as you see it lifts just the same as my other Nexus. 3. Both blades and holders are designed to hold the entire weight. Since its balanced, it works.
@NightFlyyer Am sure you had it pretty well securred. Am sure you wouldn't want anything to fly off esp the hammer (which illustrates how much weight is there). I guess what we might want to keep in mind is the added stress to the lifting blade's blade holder. Double the stress (perhaps) and old plastic don't make a safe combination. Perhaps you can find a way to see how much more stress a single blade does to the blade grips. Am sure its more than if two blades were used since they're averaged.
@ourplaypen I am still balancing, & it takes time. It was the maiden flight! At speed the blade and the hammer weigh the same! My other helis are very smooth with one blade, but I spent more time. I just wanted to see if it worked, you know. Heli blades & holder are constantly under different stress & can each maintain lift in 3D. In Nam, we got on helis that were throwing parts, missing parts and vibrating like crazy, but still flew, & getting shot at at the same time. Now that was Dangerous.
@NightFlyyer When you compare RC to Nam.... RC would be child's play. Anyway keep up with the great videos. Love them and very informative! Next is to make a video where you use ROBOSTIR as a bomb in your bomb drop. Drop anything that's not worth keeping. Take Care from Malaysia (very close to Nam)
@gmoneyhobbit You know if you learn to walk with crutches, you will never walk well without them.. There were no gyros when I learned, so I leaned the hard way with no crutches. .Now it really comes natural, I guess. Thanks.
Hey Dave, Always like your videos, I look forward to them. Say ya not know where I can get a main gear set for the Nexus do ya ? I have one I would like to get flying again.
@sdjb111 Try Ebay, might take a few months, but parts usually pop up as well as new in box kits. Also give RCU a try, place an ad asking for what parts you need. Guys also sell used and new heli's on there on some of the OOP kits. Dave, that is pretty cool man. I gotta show some friends the hammer-head.

On a more sereous note, you should make a coX one bladed heli(technically 2 blades total). One blade per head.
to make it even more hardcore, do it double on a chinook! (4 blades total)
