I don't know how many of these kids saw the film Amistad but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that these "children," not one of whom appears to be African American, understand and personally identify with what this song truly means within the context of American history. And that as John Quincy Adams argued before the US Supreme Court, we are the sum total of who we were. We have always been about freedom. And freedom is colorblind.

I'm playing this now and it is SO fun! But I'm the only bassoon, I play most of the melody and I'm surrounded be trumpets, violins and flutes... I can barely hear myself... but no the less! I try my best to play my high notes as loud as possible!

I remember I sang this song when I was in 5th grade for a massed ensemble... I remember having my mind blown when I walked in and saw the entire band, orchestra, and the middle and high school choirs there too...

Now I'm playing this song in band. The french horn part is frustrating though, since I picked up the instrument a month ago...

Yeah, my school choir is singing this song and it sounds like the exact same music. We don't combine the orchestra though...we just have a piano. And male singers like me.
