  • I haven't read beyond the first Dune novel (although I plan to). Will this game spoiler anything from the novels or is it just a stand-alone story?

  • @MozartsGhost11 "Emperor: Battle for Dune" is a stand-alone story based on the Dune universe; it is non-canonical and has nothing to do with what's conveyed in any of the novels. My commentary might spoil a few things - I provide supplemental data about the many factions we encounter - but, as you've read the first Dune book, I don't think there's anything you should worry about.

  • I was really getting into the story right up till the little fighter jets with the flapping wings appeared. I don't think I'll be able to take this game seriously anymore.

  • @joemamaUSA You're looking at least twelve thousand years into the future. There's no telling what crazy shit humanity will drive. One day, a descendant of mine may drive what appears to look like an armored platypus.

  • the spoice must flow

  • what... who are these characters... i know who they're based off of, but why use different names?

  • @rey9006 Because... the game's obviously telling a different story?

  • @GrimithR yeah, but it's based on Arrakis in the Dune universe... i mean, i guess you can't really set it after Dune with all the characters alive... *shrug* just really weird.

  • @rey9006 I can't say I know anyone who feels the way you do about the affair. Different stories based upon the same universe happen regularly. Nothing weird for me.

  • Grimmith, Do you have a card you read off of when you do these intro-things?

  • @SnixTruth A card? No, heaven forbid I actually go old school and write down something.

  • All hail Emperor Grim! £_+

  • GOD! i was playing Red Alert 2 today and this was in the sneak peeks.

  • I'm guessing that sacks of potatoes make a hefty percentage of commentators on youtube. Also looking forward to seeing you play this, since I've never actually managed to beat it when I had it.

  • Does any one else smoke what the planet is made of?

  • Love the acting in the live action sequences. :D

  • Awesome! You're doing an LP on one of my favourite childhood PC games!

  • I know almost nothing about Dune but I absolutely love the games with the FMV and real actors like this and Wing Commander IV and the early Star Wars games.

    Looking forward to more.

  • Wow that was a great introduction to the game. Now I wonder whether any of your other series have a similar one. I'm looking forward to this one - thanks Grimith!

  • Hmm, I have the game disks for this lying around here somewhere... I will have to re-install it. I still prefer Dune 2000 over Emperor, though. This is still a great game, however.

  • I wonder who Grimith is going to pick...moneys on Ordos hopefully.

  • @Astartes94 ...Really? You bet I'm going to play as House Ordos? That's amusing. I mean, far be it from me to stop you from furthering your gambling addiction, but you should at least bet on something that hasn't already been decided. As I mentioned in this very video, I'll be serving House Harkonnen.

  • @GrimithR Sorry, i was multitasking at that point in the video :P whoops

  • Sweet, one of my favourite games and sci fi universes :D

  • Comment removed

  • Will this game/commentary contain spoilers of the books? I'm still reading them and would prefer not to have many spoilers.

  • @TheBobanator4512 The game itself won't, but the commentary might.

  • Oh snap! I think I've still got my discs for this somewhere..

Sadly, I didn't get to play it quite as much as I had wanted as I think I was enjoying Earth 2150 more at the time. Still, I know I got through the campaign a couple times with Harkonnen and Atreides - didn't care as much for the Ordos. Looking forward to seeing some good ol' Sardaukar walking-death again if you opt for that route!

Also, did you have any troubles getting this game set up? I recall the installation being.. moody.

  • @Szeron Nope. Everything installed smoothly. Zero issues.

  • also, i never really got this but what the hell does the spice do then? it says it is in all this stuff but what the hell is it, gods freaking dandruff???

  • @dowdpride1 Yes. Everyone in the known universe is fighting over Dune, The Dandruff Planet.

  • @dowdpride1 Spice is a drug that if taken regularly can make you immortal, it's also the maguffin of the dune genre.

  • there are deaths, and there are deaths? umm sorry lady, no, there are is only death. what the hell are you talking about?

  • @dowdpride1 There is a rather large difference between being shot and being slowly tortured to death over decades by physical, mental, and spiritual means.

  • Only played Dune 2000 so this will be an interesting adventure GO BARON GRIMITH!!

  • I just wanna say thankyou for doing this. I mean it.

  • As someone descended from a sack of potatoes, I am greatly offended by your callous remarks about my people's intellect. Things like that are what made the Irish Potato Blight happen.

  • alos... Play Ordos.. cause they are sneaky gits :D

  • 3rd? Dune, Dune2, Dune 2k, Emperor.. i counted 4 :P

  • @McVillly Cryo Interactive and Westwood Studios were two different developers. Your entire line of logic is fucked.

  • @GrimithR my bad.. I somehow slipped "westwood" part, thought you mean globally.

  • @McVillly Also, now I see there is 5th one as well... bugger :/

  • Michael Dorn, Michael Michael McShane and the Illustrious Vincent Schiavelli, you have garnered my interest yet again, kind sir.

  • This will be fun. I never beat the last mission with any house..even on easy, but that's 10 years ago now and I'm curious. Harkonnen are fine and if you won't play on hard I already guess what will happen. Hated that part as much as i loved it.

Good luck Baron Grimith and may Atreides blood let Arrakis look like a red Caladan. o7

  • @HellraiderZap The only time I cleared the entire game - many years ago - I did it on the standard difficulty setting, with compulsive saving, so I know I'm doing the right thing. The final mission, however, is what it is, and it's actually not why I dread Hard mode. There's another mission - which I'm going to do, of course, because I'm a moron - that I hate, hate more than AM hates humans.

  • @GrimithR

Oh i think we mean the same mission, but I'm afraid to spoil stuff so I'll mention it when the time has come.

  • Fucking love Westwood games, really excited for this let's play! :D

  • whatever happen with games with movies?

  • 02:13 I have never played this game. When showed the scene recently, I thought it was a boring parody of the david lynch movie. So it is from this one. This looks like there will be fun to be had with this cut-scenes. But I would have preferred the other version.

03:43 I was hoping for Sting here :(

  • Well this game seems rather spiffy. Though for all around originality, I think its hard to beat the first Dune game, point and click adventure strategy games are quite rare for some reason.

  • Don't even REMIND me what a heartplug is! NO, THANK, YOU.

  • INTERNET why you no let me watch grimith!!!!!

  • YES! Thanks for delivering, Grimith! Very much looking forward to this LGWI adventure!

  • Aw, yeah! My first RTS was Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis ages ago, and the series has always been dear to me. It's great to see Grimith picking it up! Great choice.

  • a magical time when the year 2000 stood for the future..... lol

  • Ha.... Michael Dorn...

  • I'm looking forward to this. I would have loved for you to play house Ordos, because i would like to know more of what they are all about. Hm, maybe i'll get the game for myself and see what is to see...

  • @Leibowitz I still see the game in stores sometimes, for about 2 bucks. It's well worth it.

  • @Tehnexie wouldn't that be the bene Tleilax

  • WHARRGARBL.

I'll probably be watching this, if only for the Dune Story bits, more so than the strategy gameplay.

  • I miss westwood C&C isn't the same anymore

  • @torcidasucurac You're telling me... C&C4 was a stab in the heart.

  • (oops) invaded Arrakis and the emperor was killed.... Then the freemen army continued to conquer the rest of the Empire (it may have a specific name that I don't remember) and.... House of Ordos was mentioned in the book (I think) but in nothing more than a very short description and did not play any role in the events of Dune, Children of Dune, Dune Messiah, or God Emperor of Dune

  • @0Bonaparte Cool story, bro.

  • This is going to be hard for me to watch..... Paul Muad'dib over threw the house Corrino when the sardukuar

  • while the book and movie are very old and rather silly nowadays, the movie adaption has an awesome cast that (now) looks like they shuffled the high command of at least 4 different newer Scify Series together.

  • @olllj Watch the mini-series. It's much better than the overrated Lynch movie.

  • I can't wait for this LGWI Adventure Grimith, I enjoyed every single Dune Game including this rushed product via EA.

  • kinda looks like star wars

  • @visaman1000 star wars probably took some insperation from Dune.

  • i know that you won't listen to the comments, but what house you should play... goddamit, play them all!

  • The spice must flow

  • Pretty cool intro (the one you made, not the games, that one was generic sci-fi drivel). Looking forward to the series; NOT looking forward to all the comments telling you how to min max your micros. Suppose I can just not scroll down! =)

  • I feel that "Emperor: Battle for Dune" was a rushed game. Lot of levels lack polish and in the mid-game the gameplay boils down to how well can you chees.

  • @AgonifyeR24 I love cheese

  • lol, I almost predicted the future there on the Four Fun Facts video :D

Tho it is not very surprising since it is one of Westwood's best titles (besides the C&C series which got horribly slaughtered by EA games)

  • * two thousand and one *

  • @RebirthWoWGuild Excuse me? If you're referring to my opening in an attempt to correct my language, American vernacular discourages the usage of "and" except in reference to compound numbers. While folks will still understand you by including the aforemention conjunction, it is superfluous and may result in ridicule.

In other words, go fuck yourself.

  • @RebirthWoWGuild Yeah! Stop picking on our Great and Glorious Grimsy's Grammar and go get 'born again' man! O_o

  • AHHhhhhhh I'm so excited :3 Upload now :3

  • Grimith? I love you. You have an uncanny knack for picking amazing games!

I guess we just enjoy the same types of games. Regardless, this LGWI is gonna' be awesome...

  • I knew I knew the voice of Duke Achillus, he is Michael Dorn, the actor who played Worf on Star Trek!

  • @ytiralc

Yeah, Micheal Dorn is a badass. I love how once he said he wanted to leave showbiz, "But Sci-Fi just keeps drawing you back in."

  • Westwood made the best cutscenes.

  • Long live the fighters of Grimtih!

  • Since seeing your "Four Fun Facts" video, I had a hunch this was coming. Can't wait for more.

  • Ordos is easily the most awesome House. Their sneaky and cynical approach, although not necessarily good or evil as much as appearing to be 'chaotic neutral', is the attractive strength of Ordos. They'll turn man against his brother, your mind against yourself, and use pace and accuracy in order to strike decisively against their foes.

Ordos always had the greatest image and mystique about them, as far as I'm concerned. Their intentions are unknown, but their interests are obvious. I love it.

  • @dradeel Obviously, House Ordos is perceived as fictitious and nonexistent in canonical Dune because it is so skilled at obfuscating the truth.

  • @GrimithR Hmmm... I'd say that's quite a sexy way of putting it.

  • AMFG!!?! GRIM GRAMS AN A AWESOME GAME!!!!

    Nice choice :)

  • 9:18 - Holy crap, it's Michael Dorn! Worf works for the Atredies!

  • This sounds like an excellent LGWI adventure! I shall be waiting eagerly for the next installment.

Y'know, my knowledge of the Dune story is pretty much only that of the movie, which I watched once with some friends. I should probably add the book on my long list of "stuff I need to read"

  • @Taiyama2 If you've watched the movie, then you're in good shape when it comes to understanding what the hell is going on in this game.

  • That duke sounds very, very familiar.

  • @Ashbringer108 Questions are the beginning of wisdom, the mark of a true warrior.

  • @Ashbringer108 It's Michael Dorn; AKA Lt. Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation :)

  • This is for sure my favourite game in series. So as the House you've chosen....and I wonder if by hard you mean that mission that I have in mind but don't want to spoil for others ;p

  • THE SPICE MUST FLOW!!!

  • Ah, emperor. One of my favoriate games. Harkonen wouldn't be my choice but they're all good campagins. Warm up the devestator reactors and perform the preflight checks on the death hand!

  • @rmod42 I think the Harkonnen cutscenes are the most entertaining. I want to punch the Atreides mentat in the face, and the Ordos mentat... uh... well... haha, yeah. It's not Edric O from Dune 2000, that's for sure.

  • Holy crap, Worf is the Atreides guy!

  • FOR STARCRAFT!

  • thank you grimithR needed my fixed of RTS game was begginning to have withdraw symptomes

  • o god this brings back memories ahh dune, love it

  • my internet paused as soon as grimith said "you remmber what a heart pulg is dont you?" thank god for that

  • @opraners Your internet also remembered and decided not to see it again. Huzzah!

  • I regret never having played this chapter in the Dune RTS series; it looks so badass. That said, lemme just say - I love the David Lynch depiction of Dune - yes the movie is flawed and the movie deviates from the novel(s) but I can appreciate why the changes were necessary. I think it's safe to say that without the fantastic art direction of the movie, it seems unlikely that the Westwood games would have been as good or even if they would be made at all.

  • @mikepalomino On its own, I think David Lynch's movie is worthwhile, but I much prefer the Sci-Fi television series released in 2000. Ian McNeice, for example, plays a far better Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

  • @GrimithR I own both but I have no love for the SciFi Channel's version, even if Ian McNeice is arguably the highlight. The wonky art direction (butterfly hats and the Emperor's snazzy purple-satin jump suit) and panoply of Euro-accents made the entire miniseries sound and look like gay vampire fashion week (no offense to gay vampires). Interestingly, I thought Children of Dune was excellent and made me wish that its predecessor had its production values.

  • @mikepalomino What, you don't think Shaddam looked like a twat?

  • @GrimithR Let's just say I prefer Jose Ferrer's robust Emperor Shaddam IV to the guy in the space age pajamas ;)

  • @mikepalomino I don't know. I just spent the past 495 minutes watching my Director's Cut of the Sci-Fi Dune, and Shaddam's Perpetual Pajama Party is awesome.

  • Yep, I used to like this game. Why'd I stop playing it back in the day? Cd exploded into billion pieces while I was playing.. and I almost shat myself because of the sound of the explosion.

  • those 2 women in the opening remind me a bit of data from startrek IDK WHY they do stfu D:

  • great now im going to have nightmares after seeing that heartplug scene

  • @cjmdlkr54 Just imagine: Your nightmares would be greater if you had seen the heartplug scene in David Lynch's "Dune."

  • @GrimithR That is a disturbingly awesome scene. I liked Lynch's take on the novel, even if he did take some creative license with it. And House Harkonnen, Grimith? Never could have guessed... Really looking forward to this LGWI!

  • @CyberViking27 Shocker, I know. While I'd like to show off Duke Worf, I think the Harkonnen have the most worthwhile campaign to showcase.

  • @GrimithR *shudder*

  • I could hump you right now, seriously.

I love Dune! But I would argue that Dune 2000 was a better game. The live action cutscenes are by far the most impressive of any Westwood games. Bar maybe Kane.

  • @Asher535 Noree Moneo is definitely better than the Atreides mentat in this game, and Edric O has his moments too. However, I disagree; Dune 2000 is a worse game. That is why I'm not playing it. Besides, PolarDash is already playing Dune II, and that's too similar of a game to Dune 2000.

  • could you do all campaigns?

  • @ShadowWolfRising I'm only committing to the Harkonnen campaign.

  • I thought the heart plug was a frag grenade when I first saw it.

  • so the no atomics rule I broke that in Dune 2000

  • @PrimeroAtreides Man, I love the Death Hand Missile.

  • More videos going to be uploaded tonight? Or am I going to have to wait until tomorrow?

  • Grimith, I didn't think you'd be so crude as to insult me and my fellow sacks of potatoes. For shame.

  • Wait Worf was/is a game actor? That makes me a bit sad.

  • @Lokius1 So you'd prefer hearing him in another one of his roles, then: I.M. Weasel.

  • @Lokius1 Michael Dorn has voiced and acted in many games.

  • Is... Is that Michael Dorn? As the Baron of Arrakis? Wat.

  • @DoctorBottle Yes, Michael Dorn plays as Duke Achillus Atreides in this game. We won't be seeing much of him, what with me playing as the Harkonnen and all, but he's still there.

  • @GrimithR That's all kind of hilarious, and I don't even know why.

  • @DoctorBottle Worf has a sense of humor. On the Enterprise, he was considered to be quite amusing.

  • 12 min introduction! Lol WUT

  • @dylan522p Is there a problem?

  • @GrimithR nope chuck testa, but no i was just amazed
