  • why the fuck don't Andy Partridge, Colin and Dave all get a bleedin' knighthood for services to music. And in particular my musical education. cheers chaps!

  • Cover competition winner, even better than Todd Rundgren or Flaming Lips versions

  • BRILLIANT

  • Brilliant. Definitely Dave Gregory, one of his cover-band projects was called Arch Marble and the Hallmarks if memory serves?

  • Nothing is real....... Precisely.

  • Paul is Dead.

  • Purest Andy. Thank you for the orgasm.

  • A great version by Andy Partridge, this remember me to Martin Newell xD!. The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever original is much better i think.

  • Gorgeous and thrilling!

  • XTC FOREVER!!!

You have Andy Partridge's I Am The Walrus Version?.

  • gregsy "released" a full CD of exact replicas of his favorite 60's songs.

  • @GeminiOsirisDream Correct. Gregory was obsessed recreating EXACT Bealtes songs. I wish he'd release a whole CD of them. The Smithereens actually did that...2 CD's worth!

  • Wow. XtC, all or in part, are ALWAYS going to be relevant.

  • Nice to hear XTC to do a cover one of the Beatles songs.

  • @jayfey77 the flowers on the cover of Sgt. Pepper spell "Beatles". They didn't change their names... at all. On the Dukes of the Stratosphear EP/LP there is no single mention of XTC, Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, or David Gregory (or his brother Ian (?) for that matter) ANYWHERE. That is the definition of a pseudonym. Sgt. Pepper was not a pseudonym for the Beatles. It's awfully hard to steal an idea from someone that never had it. Your whole point is... pointless.

  • it does sound right

  • ugh i cant believe people prefer this to the beatles it doesnt do the song justice, the fact he is copying says alot but then xtc pretty much copied the beatles in every aspect throughout their career and you can hear it in all their albums.

  • @jayfey77 Being influenced by someone is not copying, and XTC's music is quite distinct from the fab four.

  • just listen to this song they are copying.even down to the intro.ytou are either deaf or stupid or both to not hear it.even xtc admits being influenced by the fab four and you can hear it in their music.

  • @jayfey77 I'm not talking about this cover song. You just acknowledged my point: being influenced by someone is not the same as ripping someone off. Green Day rips off the Sex Pistols, the Clash and every other classic punk band song after song. XTC is a melodic pop band, but with a unique sound. Listen to "Statue of Liberty" and explain how that is "copying" the Beatles. And thank you for being so pleasant.

  • so u dont call this ripping someone off? he is doing a beatles song u retard.thats ripping someone off.and xtc doing the dukes of stratosphere thats ripping off the beatles using a different name making a psychedelic album like thebeatles did.lol at unique.xtc would sound totally different today if the beatles never existed.ur a good man albert brown is a total rip off of the beatles sound.ur just deaf or to stupid to hear it.

  • @jayfey77 It's a cover song, so royalties go to the writers, i.e. not ripping off. I'm not sure you understand what a cover song is.

You obviously can't grasp my simple point. By your criteria, pretty much every rock band after the Beatles is copying them and ripping them off. The Dukes of the Stratosphear LP was a tribute to many 60s artists: the Beatles, Traffic, the Beach Boys, the Zombies, etc. That was XTC acknowledging their influences.

  • its a cover song and they are still copying the beatles by doing it.and those other groups u named didnt change their name for one album like the beatles did.and xtc changing their name for that album was the same as sgt pepper.no sgt pepper no beatles no dukes of stratosphere.

  • @jayfey77 The Beatles did not change their name for Sgt. Pepper. It says "THE BEATLES" right on the cover. The Dukes LP (I'm talking vinyl, when it came out) didn't mention XTC anywhere. They even used pseudonyms on the LP. Regardless, I've enjoyed the back and forth. I'm an avid Beatles fan, as well as an XTC fan. I always enjoy hearing other artist's take on the Beatles catalog; by the way, this one isn't terribly impressive to me. Thanks for at least not calling me retarded this time.

  • it says sgt pepper on the cover.for you to argue that xtc didnt get the idea to c hange their name from the beatles who did sgt pepper shows what a retard u are .everybody knows this its and for u to disagree proves how ignorant u are.u are a retard.

  • @jayfey77 I made an effort to educate you, but you seem willfully ignorant. Go back to your Justin Bieber cds, since you obviously don't know anything about music.

  • i hate justin bieber and i only listen to music from the 60's and 70's i hate new music.you are an idiot since you think i listen to new music.and the beatles put the name sgt pepper on the cover of the album and took on a different identity including changing their look.usually all their albums have the name beatles on top of the cover but not sgt pepper.you are a dumbass to think the dukes of stratosphere would have existed i9f sgt pepper had never been made.

  • @jayfey77 You obviously have not the slightest grasp of what I've been talking about: influence vs copying (plagiarism). I've not once denied XTC/Dukes being influenced by the Beatles, BUT, while there are plenty of Beatle-esque elements in Dukes, the songs don't sound like any SPECIFIC Beatles song. The boy talking segues are inspired by Traffic's "Hole in my Shoe," "Pale and Precious" by Good Vibrations, etc. But I give up. You win. Mark it down on your calender.

  • listen to you're a good man albert brown that sounds like a beatles ripoff to me you are just deaf or stupid or both to not hear it.

  • @sputnik102 and "Vanishing Girl" is the Hollies, "25 O'Clock" is The Electric Prunes" and so on. In fact, only "Shiny Cage", "Mole From the Ministry", and "Collideascope" leave me (personally) with a distinctive Beatles flavor. As for XTC songs: good luck finding the Beatles influence in Senses Working Overtime or Making Plans For Nigel. Wow.

  • @mafelton collideascope is more lennon solo than the beatles, i'd say.

  • @sputnik102 The only thing Justin Bieber is good for is to give first-class blowjobs to smelly old men who pick him up on Santa Monica Blvd., where is is working as a male prostitute. He is a sex toy for men, girls and women, but a singer????? No fucking way.

  • @nicodagger - Can you be even more immature?

  • @GeminiOsirisDream - Thanks for clarifying to all. Dave had/has a hobby of trying to duplicate certain classic recordings on his own. There's also a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Son" out there under the pseudonym "David Dreams" which is Dave on all the instruments and Andy singing.

  • @xnonsuchx - Forgot to add that this "Strawberry Fields" cover was released under the pseudonym, "Colin's Hermits."

  • sounds like partridge still uses his cheesy emu proteus synth from early ninties ) )

  • pretty faithful cover

  • Todd Rundgren did a pretty good job of it, too, on his "Fasithful" album. The best cover he did on that album was, "Good Vibrations". Except for one VERY tiny bit, it's such a perfect knock off, nobody can tell the difference between Todd's cover and The Beach Boys' original.

  • This is actually only Andy on vocals...Dave Gregory did all the instruments and this is one of his 'hobby' songs of trying to duplicate original recordings of other songs he likes. There's also a recording (not on Fuzzy Warbles) of Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun" w/ Andy on vocals, under the pseudonym "David Dreams."

  • not enough of a new wave sound.

  • It wasn't SUPPOSED to have any new wave sound! It's a psych tune.

  • Everyone who composes original music should consider doing exercises like this. It teaches you so much just to "copy" what you most love to the best of your ability. Listen to those drums. Andy programmed a great Ringo Robot!! Getting all those chords under your hands, practicing the phrasing. This makes him a greater artists on his own works. GREAT!

  • perfectly right !!!!!

  • @Corporations8MyBaby I agree...we learn from each other. I love what Andy does, and I admire his talent to mimic. I try to do the same (although not as well)

  • Good Cover!

  • Wow! I love this version.

  • Gotta agree, this is my fave song of all time, not just bt the Beatles but EVERYONE! Sure its somewhat rough, but for what they could do with it, it's the best cover I've heard out there! Cindy Lauper's and Sandy Farina's versions are quite good. But Peter Gabriel doing it with a 'Kermit the Frog' accent just doesn't get it...

  • The idea of doing this cover was to make it sound as much like The Beatles' original as possible using what they had in the home studio. It was sort of a hobby of Andy Partridge and Dave Gregory's. Judged in that context, I think they did pretty damn well.

  • Cranberry sauce for Andy.

  • I'm dissapointed with this cover. It sounds almost exactly the same as the original. Remember XTC's cover of 'All Along The Watchtowers'? Sure, it was terrible... but at least it's interesting to listen to.

  • Those looking for a different arrangement will be disappointed, but Andy's eccentric voice is great for this song, isn't it?

  • What idiots you people are... 'better than the original Beatles version' even Andy would say that's rubbish, how can anyone beat the Beatles at their own songs..gotta be Yanks to say something so stupid!!

  • But he's still alive!! How did you bury him?!! I'm intrigued and somewhat baffled!

  • I love all the version, but the beatles version is the best

  • i like it more than the beatles version too

  • Needs more "cranberry sauce".

  • Sounds so incredibly different from his XTC tracks, but I still love their songs and him doing my fave song of all time...priceless.

  • More on the nail than Todd Rundgrens version !

  • Late Dave Gregory?

  • Wow. He really took pains to get the instrumental track arranged like the original.

I don't have any of the Fuzzy Warbles set. Do the liner notes say anything about this version? Did he do it as a 'study'? Again, amazing. Thanks for posting this.

  • Actually the track was minutely dissected and played by the late Dave Gregory (all instruments) with Andy adding vocals.. the result, credited to Colin's Hermits, was included on the compilation '1967: Through the Looking Glass' way back in 1990..

  • "the late Dave Gregory"????

    Dave Gregory's not dead.......

  • I buried Dave!

  • A good one lol

  • Reply to miiastro: It's a joke and a Beatles reference. (I'm saying that for future readers too)
