OMG THEY ARE EVIL!
You are right that we only drove the Z axis. There are actually three motors that could have been driven.
We removed the z-stage and extruder just to make sure it didn't impact. I think the motion would have been OK with it, but we weren't sure.

How much did the z-stage nuts moving freely affect the sound? And why did you move the z-stage entirely? to keep it from hitting anything or for sound reasons?
