Well, I thought this remake/revival of WKRP with original and new actors was a rarity in the world of TV....until I saw recently where TNT is reviving Dallas in the same fashion, with Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy reprising their roles, as well as some new characters thrown in the mix. Some things never change.
This came on when I was a kid, 11:30 on Saturday nights. Me being a big "Wayne's World" fan, I of course watched SNL instead. I've since grown to enjoy the original WKRP and see I wasn't missing much here. :-)
never saw this rehash of wkrp and glad i didnt .. without johnny, jennifer, venus and andy it just doesnt feel right .... i mean the blonde who they obviously got to be a loni anderson knockoff doesnt wash and why is tawny kitaen here? she is more of a bimbo than anderson ever was
I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy all of the WKRP episodes with the original music. Its my favourite show - I'm only sorry I didn't tape them when I had the chance. - the new version with the altered music just isn't the same.
@radams36 I agree with you, the show was more geared toward physical comedy then the original but it had some really great moments. I loved all the episodes that had Johnny Fever involved in them as well.
Was there actually a reason to watch this show without Gary Sandy and his spandex jeans that left little to the imagination? His junk was on full view for America on a weekly basis.
"The New" WKRP in Cincinnati ran for two seasons in syndication back in 1991 and 1992. Three of the original cast members, the late Gordon Jump reprised his role as "Mr. Carlson," Frank Bonner reprised his role as the repugnant "Herbert R. Tarlek, Jr." and the late Richard Sanders reprised his role as newsman "Les Nessman."
One episode included a live remote at the "Pinedale Shopping Center," where the infamous Thanksgiving Turkey Drop happened. This time the remote went off without a hitch.
Howard Hessman was eventually brought in to reprise the role of Johnny Fever(reason why he left Head Of the Class) as a recurring character. Loni Anderson appeared as Jennifer in an episode directed by then husband Burt Reynolds.
@TEMPmichaelhansen He played the assassin Murdoc in MacGyver. He also guest-starred in an episode of the original WKRP (season one). I don't know why they hired him to be a regular cast member.
Sure fire way to kill the series lets hire French Stewart instead of trying to get Howard Hessman. Oh and Tawny Kitean (The Bachelor Party Chick) to play the Bailey role?
I WATCHED THIS, IT WAS OKAY . BUT THERE WAS NO DOCTOR, OR JENNIFER. YEAH THEY POPPED IN A FEW TIMES, BUT, YA GOTTA HAVE DOCTOR FEVER AND JENNIFER, OR - NO WKRP.
Wow. I never even heard that they tried to revive this. What a horrible idea! You can't replace any of the original cast and have a viable alternative! What the hell were they thinking. They even ruined the theme song.
@jemjean - Personally, I liked the updated opening theme...kept the spirit of the original, yet took away the disco-esque vibe and made it a bit more modern.
@dtjesus101 Hugh Willson only wrote the pilot ep and didnt have much or anything to do with the series. Bill Dial, who played Bucky on the original, oversaw the series. It was MTM and not Hugh who revived the show.
man...This is like a completely different cast from when I remember it when I was young...Never saw one with these ppl. No Tim Reid and Lonnie huh.....Never knew French Stewart was on this...big fan of his on 3rd rock from the sun.
I remember an ep. of this where Mykelti Williamson's character on " New WRKP " was supposedly killed or lost when his plane crashed over the Atlantic or somewhere. I forgot how that was resolved.
@knoxvilleguy2 Hope youre ready to afford her expensive "coke" habbit...did u see her on celebrity rehab....she spilled the beans on how much she does and how much she usually partys....hope she finally stopped!...Alot of it was pills too...which is just as bad and then mixing the two...Whew!...Trouble with no appologies!
Ahhhh..... Forget I mentioned. If she doesn't stop, they'll find her body in a dumpster in a back alley somewhere, or wandering the sidewalks like poor Margot Kidder ( although M. Kidder's problems weren't drug - related, I know ).
As one of my friends said at the time "they took the three weakest characters and only brought those back." (I know, Hesseman and Reid came back for one-off guest shots, but really...)
@qbc176 Did last two seasons, the problem was it played at like 2 in the morning on Sunday in NYC. Johnny, Venus & Jennifer showed up now and then. Wasn't the Original but, Wasn't really bad. I've seen worst retread shows.
@qbc176 it was late 80s and it wasn't nearly as popular as the old show obviously but the cost of making the show was just under what it was pulling in IE not enough to keep paying for it so it got cut. I wouldn't mind watching this again even though Johnny and Bailey aren't on it, though it DOES have Tawny Kitaen and at least Les is still on.
@qbc176 it was a spinoff on CBS. it was made for syndication from 1991-1993. yeas the original is way better, but I must say tawny looks so hot! I'd buy that for a dollar!
@wannawatchu66 That was one of those things that proves realism should not trump coolness. It was totally unrealistic that the DJs never wore headphones on the original, but it made for much better scenes because they had more freedom to move around.
I never knew French Stewart was either! I mean, I recall watching this show, but it seems as long ago as the original. Oh, I got one for ya. Check out the intro to The New Leave It To Beaver.
This was not better than the original But I still like it especially with Tawny Kitaen. And Marla Jeanette Rubinoff who was also very sexy and hot on Down To Earth as Candy.
This was one of the few revamps of a show that was actually s good as the original, it got even better when Venus and Johnny Fever started showing up semi-regularly. they should run this alongside the original when it repeats.
I watched this revival a lot during its first season, but lost interest after that. It just wasn't the same without the original characters. I have the first season DVD package, and it's better than nothing, but it really is rotten that we can't have complete episodes for all the seasons just because of a bunch of greedy music publishers.
Yeah. I was really pumped when the show came out (I'd watched the original when I was a kid and on reruns in high school), but the new one just fell flat. You can't capture lightning in a bottle twice.
Since first season of WKRP wasn't a huge hit when it was released onto DVD, I don't think the following seasons and this spinnoff will ever come to DVD. Why Season 1 of WKRP was not a big hit was because of the entire first season being edited. Edited out original music that was used and replaced with unknown/misc. 70s style music for one. And some scenes were cut out. That's why I feel that if they don't released them in original/unaltered format, people then will purchase WKRP on DVD.
Yep...Tim Reid guest starred in a first-season ep, Loni Anderson did so twice, and Howard Hesseman had basically become a recurring guest by the 2nd season, appearing in 9(!) eps.
I liked the theme tune and credits to the NEW WKRP in Cincinnati!
They kept true to the original version while modernizing the theme tune a bit to eliminate the disco pieces heard in the original theme tune and also for not going too modern.
Some people say this revival was bad?
at least this revival kept a 1/3 of the original cast.
And there are faaaaarrrr worse revivals than this one!
I also liked that a # of the new cast members had ties to the original series...for instances, 1st season regular Michael Des Barres had previously guest starred in the orig series' classic "Hoodlum Rock" ep, while the character of Art Carlson Jr. was also introduced on the orig' series "Young Master Carlson" ep...also, both Edie McClurg and Carol Bruce dropped in occasionally to reprise their guest roles as Lucille Tarlek and Mama Carlson, respectively.
Oh, and engineer Buddy Dornster was played by John Chappell, who previously guest starred in the orig series ep "Preacher" (the brother of former engineer Bucky Dornster, a role Bill Dial reprised for one ep on the revival), while Allyn Ann McLerie also returned as Carlson's wife for a guest shot in a 2nd season ep.
Who knew French Stewart would go from playing a wacked out DJ to being a spaced out alien? :)
As i've said elsewhere in other places the New WKRP wasn't as bad as some make it out to be. It wasn't true to the original show's style but some episodes were damn funny from a slapstick perspective.

"Venus, We Hardly Knew Ya" (they actually showed the ep's title @ the very end of the closing credits, w/the copyright notice), which originally aired 1/11/92.
