What a lot of people don't realize was that Ric Flair is the Dick Clark of wrestling. He worked hard to promote the guys in Mid-Atlantic and really helped make it what it was. Remember, Flair broke his back in a private plane crash in North Carolina near Wilmington in 1975 so imagine how hard it was for him then.

T.A. was a great character and a great performer in the ring. He represented what a lot of the fan base was at that time. He was a big draw and the perfect face. HHis injury came at a time when they were giving him a push. Would they have put the strap on him? nah, flair was the company, but T.A. got over with fans at that time for sure.

I totally agree. I have stated before that he was very green in Florida in 1982 and early 1983. But, Magnum got better and better each year.

I am a big fan of Flair but keep in mind Flair was in the business for 12 years at this time while Magnum was in for 3 years. Flair had to learn the ropes too and learned quickly and if you saw Magnum in 1982-early 83 and 84 and 85 he was a quick learner too.

Flair came back from his injury, sadly Magnum TA could not.

yeah, I have the "Wrestling Gold" DVD, and they have a few matches of Magnum in Southwest Championship Wrestling from Texas, one of them against AWA Champion, Nick Bockwinkel. he was very green, but you could see the potential.

Flair really made a habit of seeing the future in people. Steamboat, Magnum, Sting, Pillman. all soon to be greats. it is a shame that Magnum got injured...

I always hated Magnum as a character, but he's a great athelete. My uncle who introduced me to wrestling around this time, was always rooting for Flair and I guess it rubbed off on me. They have great chemistry in this interview and their matches are all classics.

This was the beauty of the NWA. Promos and interviews were done in a natural setting, giving it a far more realistic, intimate feel to it. The point is, we were outside observers, not participants in these feuds. The WWE does the opposite. They use the crowd and overproduce everything to the point where it's way too flashy, like a Broadway (or Las Vegas) act. The WWE has always been about flashy,gimmicky characters, as opposed to "real" athletes like Blanchard or Flair, Magnum, etc.

Hey no apologies needed,look at some of those classics and see that it took real talent to make the most out virtually no money,gimmicks,or high power stars,which most big comapanies use today. All they had were themselves and they sold it very well. What would a lot of these performers today do without all of that? Very few would make it,especially in that era! To be honest,some known wrestlers couldn't cut it. Remember Bobby Eaton, he wasn't very good on the mic, but great in the ring. The One Man Gang,another one who really never found his niche as well,but made a name for himself in quite a few federations. I could name a few more, but you get the pic.
