What a lot of people don't realize was that Ric Flair is the Dick Clark of wrestling. He worked hard to promote the guys in Mid-Atlantic and really helped make it what it was. Remember, Flair broke his back in a private plane crash in North Carolina near Wilmington in 1975 so imagine how hard it was for him then.
@skinwalkerxxx He had plenty of matches for it. just never won it. He chased Flair for nearly 2 years (and had challenged him in Mid-South too) before his wreck.
"you keep your mouth shut or you'll find yourself in the ring in a minute." Flair was always HILARIOUS on the mic when he would randomly address a fan who was heckling him during an interview LMAO
a shame Magnum got hurt because he was the next HUGE thing and a Flair/Magnum feud would've been all kinds of awesome
Flair could take a nothing happening punk like TA and make him a star. That's the gift Ric had and why everyone wanted time with him in the ring and on the mic. God I miss real wrestling. Long live the NWA, Mid - Atlantic and Memphis era.
Damn, a lot of sexual innuendo here, unintended of course.
Besides talking about doing "a personal favor," he also says, "Anyone who has ever enjoyed 60 minutes w/ me is a man" and "I'm gonna make your chimes ring."
Doh! I wonder if Ric looked back at this and smacked himself in the head.
Flair just flat out owned Magnum TA in this talk down. Magnum looked out of place with Flair and Mag's mic skills were kind of monotone and limited. Flair.... best ever!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Sucks he got hurt but I always found his act to be boring... can't see him being the Champ for more than a month only to have him drop the belt... he just wasn't that good an act.
T.A. was a great character and a great performer in the ring. He represented what a lot of the fan base was at that time. He was a big draw and the perfect face. HHis injury came at a time when they were giving him a push. Would they have put the strap on him? nah, flair was the company, but T.A. got over with fans at that time for sure.
u may be right about that. at the time he was the next big thing. nwa was pushing him 2 be the new ric fair. if that had not happen. i dont think sting would have got the push he got
I totally agree. I have stated before that he was very green in Florida in 1982 and early 1983. But, Magnum got better and better each year.
I am a big fan of Flair but keep in mind Flair was in the business for 12 years at this time while Magnum was in for 3 years. Flair had to learn the ropes too and learned quickly and if you saw Magnum in 1982-early 83 and 84 and 85 he was a quick learner too.
Flair came back from his injury, sadly Magnum TA could not.
yeah, I have the "Wrestling Gold" DVD, and they have a few matches of Magnum in Southwest Championship Wrestling from Texas, one of them against AWA Champion, Nick Bockwinkel. he was very green, but you could see the potential.
Flair really made a habit of seeing the future in people. Steamboat, Magnum, Sting, Pillman. all soon to be greats. it is a shame that Magnum got injured...
amen, bro..for all the Larry Zbyszkos, Scott Halls, Scott Steiners & Bret Harts of the world who might have legit beef with Flair, for their own reasons, I still respect him for that.
even Lex Luger, who might not have been a "great one", Flair made him look like a star in the ring, and he always tried to bring up the future guys, and put some shine on them. at least in MY opinion...
you keep your mouth, you're gonna find yourself in the ring in a minute, when I'm out here, punks like you keep your mouth shut, I'll take your girl out back and make a woman out of her
Agreed. Magnum's mic skills were pretty good, he could get his point across and pull you in, but Ric Flair was just that much farther ahead of everybody else. Probably - and I say probably - the only person that could come close to Flair in terms of charisma and mic skills at that time was Dusty.
Whoah!! sh8t!!! this is Magnum TA at the age of 26?? I cant believe how much older he looks than 26 years of age. He lookslike he could be 40 years old. But oh well professional wrestlers dont age well due to their high ammount of anger, stress and steroids. Has anyone seen Magnum TA now?? He lookslike he is 70 years old even though he is 49. Shit look at Rick Flair back than for only being 35 , he came across as someone in their middle to late 40s
Even the fucking mid-carders back then had exponentially better mic-skills than any main eventer today. These 20 year old punks are nothing today...never should be allowed to perform until they've proven their worth in the big leagues.
I always hated Magnum as a character, but he's a great athelete. My uncle who introduced me to wrestling around this time, was always rooting for Flair and I guess it rubbed off on me. They have great chemistry in this interview and their matches are all classics.
I was looking at the comment that wildbilltexas made. In all due respect,

This was the beauty of the NWA. Promos and interviews were done in a natural setting, giving it a far more realistic, intimate feel to it. The point is, we were outside observers, not participants in these feuds. The WWE does the opposite. They use the crowd and overproduce everything to the point where it's way too flashy, like a Broadway (or Las Vegas) act. The WWE has always been about flashy, gimmicky characters, as opposed to "real" athletes like Blanchard or Flair, Magnum, etc.
Hey,nyyterp it's refreshing to see that there are people out there who truly know their stuff, and aren't blinded by the spoonfed antics of the WWE and other promotions. Continue to call things as they are,and not just how you see them. Because there's always more to wrestling than what meet the eyes!!!
My apologies about that. I've gotten so used to WWE's kiddie gimmicks that it makes just a 80's promo like this one look so low budget. They hardly do a long 5 minute promo like this anymore.
I wish I could get the WWE channel on my cable just so I could watch the old shows.
Hey no apologies needed, look at some of those classics and see that it took real talent to make the most out virtually no money, gimmicks,or high power stars, which most big comapanies use today.
