Tarantulas are invertebrates. This means they have no nervous system and consequently can NOT FEEL PAIN. There are no "inhumane" ways of killing any arthropods or molluscs. This is why in the UK, it is illegal to feed live mice, gerbils, hamsters, rats etc, but feeding live insects and myriapods is common and completely legal.

So, though it may be a waste of a great, fascinating animal, this is in no way "inhumane." What is sad though, is that I doubt the chefs knew that.

It is not known whether or not they can feel pain because there are no/few extensive studies on tarantula nervous systems. They can react to what would be "pain" in our terms, but the belief is they cannot perceive it as actual pain.

In Florida, where I live now, if you catch a Cuban Tree Frog or Widow spider, you're supposed to freeze and kill it, but if you want, you can burn it, blow it up, cook it, anything, as long as you don't release it back into the wild.
