Thanks for the post. I've worked for Toyota Motor Manufacturing for 22 years and this is like second nature. Switch from production to training and development now. Designing a course on PDCA to teach and stumbled onto your videos. Deming was a giant. To bad the good old USA missed the message. I'm afraid most of the country still does.
Thank you for this! Winning can be based on quality, cooperation and respect. Instead of cheap, competition and manipulation! What a gift to humanity. Thanks for 1 to 3!
It still amazes me how many people cannot accept that it really is the answer to so many problems. The turf wars with mgmt & labor cause so many problems for society.

Thanks for the post! In my opinion, in this country, greed is what kept these methods out of the market. CEOs are all about looking good for the short term, & then jumping ship to the next company when they show profits from cutting on foundations like education & training quality suppliers etc. The ego of the corporate heads is like a virus, & it appears that no one is immune to it.
No accident that Peterson of Ford Motors is here, & Ford is now competitive with the Japanese.
@murphicus I was fortunate to spend over a year working with Ford management, contracted to them by my employer to help them develop and pilot the training for the worldwide roll-out of the Ford Production System. I am no longer with that employer and I have no connection to Ford, but I have to say that of dozens of auto industry companies I've seen in operation firsthand, Ford impressed me the most in that all of the managers seemed to be heading in the same direction. Deming sparked that.
During my lifetime, I have lived Deming's principles. I've seen them transform complete corporate failures into unbelieveable financial successes. What makes a company turn to his system? When it's standing on the edge of financial oblivion. Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing it!
Amazing, this guy will shape the 21st century and he did it in the 20th century. I'm going to study statistics and this guy, and people like bjorn lomborg make the subject exciting.
I know - and the shame of it is that most American companies and management schools STILL DON'T GET IT! If you get the chance, "The Deming Library" is a great series of videos that follows the outline of his seminars. If you want a very interesting book that is more "outside the box" philosophy - Robert Pirsig "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"
I'm a consevative and I get so frustrated with the way fellow conservatives just dont seem to get this. I think that this is the way forward but people still seem to manage in that old style of 'drill your workers' and 'the only mistakes that are made are due to incompetence' just seriously dumb stuff like that. demings focus on systems is the key. workers cant make mistakes if they cant make mistakes (it seems obvious doesnt it).
I think that one of the problems is that people who get to the top got there through the "old" system. It's like changing education when those who were the successful ones run it - why change? It served them well. On the other hand, in competitive circles there is a Win/loose mindset - win/win is foreign - also, everyone wants to put their mark on things - consistency is hard when the next big job is the goal. it soes not look as good on a resume to say that "we continued constant improvement..
Also, it's not just conservatives. I work in a very liberal academic environment - and the habits are the same. When things go wrong it's always easiest to find someone to blame, rather than look at the system. The "Power Myth" is strong. Just like "rugged individualism" in the US that ignores all of the cooperation that it took to build the country. Most employees know the dirty secret that most in management are climbers who want to benefit by others labor to get their rewards. The mindset...
As Deming also said, management needs to tell the workers "WHY" they are doing something; or need to change something. Putting goals out there to reach - so they can look better than their rival in another unit? Without tell someone the real reason why you want something done, you are leaving them with impression that you don't really have a valid reason. There needs to be a better explanation than "because I told you to" - it's harder work for management, because they can't just make things up
It's all a game. Workers will go along with the management style, or slogan of the month, knowing that there will be a new manager soon. Getting people's input for improvement is hard work for mgmt. too. Most people get burned by asking questions. How stupid is that? People get ripped for not knowing something mrmt. thinks they should. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot! Next time, you don't ask - you just avoid dealing with something - or shift the blame onto someone else. No problem.
ripping people is the easiest way to keep mistakes in any system. sure a workforce will respond for a while. Deming says 'beat a horse and it will run faster for a while' this is paramount to the philsophy of deming, a belief in people. In the Toyota way the most fundamental principle is Continuous Improvement (Kaizen), which is supported by Reflection (Hansei) If your workforce is more concern is Quota or getting chewed out they are unlikely to point out fundamental flaws in the system.

After looking at your page, I fear that W Edwards Deming would feel 10x as strong about having the same last name as you.
His legacy is the transformation of the products produced by a country (and now the world) that has raised the standard of living for everyone.
I hope that some day you accomplish 1/1,000,000th of what he did in his lifetime+

Wedwards Deming should be happy. he doesnt have to deal with you! jeeez! your arguing with a 14 year old with A.D.D. i hope you are proud
