You would have to be very hard to please if you weren't impressed by that demonstration. Of course always better in someone else's 4x4 ;-) but none the less quite amazing.
Pretty well any car can do this, they did similar with a Ford Fiesta.... the military are well funded out of my taxes and can afford to destroy expensive vehicles for fun by doing this sort of thing. There are a few places you need to keep the water out in order to keep running short term, however the water still gets into a lot of the other bits which fail later on.
@g0fvt I didn't see top gear taking the Fiesta to depths where the water was inches from covering the entire car height, or tackling waves half as big.
This was featured in a recent LRO issue, and the backend would float, but they have a gridded floor to allow sea water in and they are fitted with weights too
American here proud owner of a 1944 and 45 willys 96 jeep cherokee and a 99 LandRover Discovery II ....and I have to admit all the jeeps are fun and cool...but I sell all of them and my girlfriend before Id consider getting rid of my LandRover.
They still look after their land rovers by putting them throw fresh water after they go in the sea and probable better looked after then a lot civilian land rovers.
@EtecGear You are dimwitted, do you really believe the military only uses their specially modified Royal marine commando landrovers on beaches with underwater roads "Sorry lads, we can't launch an amphibious assault there, we didn't tell the engineers to build a road under the water 3 months ago and hope no-one would notice" These things are specially adapted for the Marines ( clue in the name ) for such operations as opposed to other landrover variants used by the Brits. :)

In theory the salt wont rust the skin, but take into consideration the steel chassis and other vulnerable components such as the axles... Aluminium doesn't rust, it oxidises (looks like a powdery grey mould)... Landrovers are prone to this through Bi-metallic corrosion (steel + aluminium coming into contact with each other) e.g steel rivets in ally skin... I used to work on Navy Lynx heli's, they were really bad for corrosion with all that flying over the sea....
@BobTheElder Thanks, I am aware of this... Like I said, the steel components will rust if not protected properly... and the aluminium will also, in its own way, corrode.
that aint deep it is barley over the bonnet during a warn challange ed cobley and i were so deep he had to get out onto the roof to navagate us back to shore..pics were in lro to prove it
Great Video. These are MOD spec Land Rovers and are kept well maintained before and after salt water has been all over and they are well trained. Dont try at home kids. Note they drove in against (not side on but like a boat would tackle waves) so the wave would push the LR down for grip and opposite coming out so the wave would push the LR to shoer and against sand for traction and not turn it over. Again great Video
I was watching something on history channel here in the U.S, an they were showing Jeeps, tanks, APC's an stuff driving off the landing craft and forwarding 1,000 yards or so thru the ocean in water over the hood,s.. But A Newer jeep wouldnt make it.
haha you would be from the UK. Maurice Wilks modeled the lr after the willys you ill-informed-faggot go drink some tea and soak up some more of your social welfare programs while your at it.
A friend of mine used to work at ATTURM developing the waterproofing for the Wolf, and what you see there is the result of some very time consuming and expensive testing!!

I hate to say it but Clarkson did something similar in a FIESTA on Top Gear on Sunday!

True but the people who developed this landrover also sealed the Fiesta to do it. A normal Fiesta wouldnt have made it a foot into the sea.
