You misunderstand my point. I AGREE that power is not everything. My point is that unless you are capable of pushing a porsche/beemer/aston/whatever to the very limit of its capability the Top Gear test you mentioned is not a better real world view. Also, for me it is the enjoyment factor which counts more than stop watch times on the twisty roads. The beemer may be more fun than the porsche on those roads even tho its not as quick...
@nick5772 - understand what you are saying as far as real world performance, however, in the real world would you really be able to push any of the cars shown in the top gear vid to their limit on a wet twisty road? In the real world I would never push my car anywhere near its limit under those conditions. Handling grip etc is hugely important however in the real world straight line power is often the only test we will ever actually apply.
They never say what gear either car is in. The BMW could be in 3rd right in its power band and the Porsche in 6th no where near it. Its pretty easy to make one car seem crap with a rolling drag race. The 993TT and the 996TT are similarly in two different worlds. 996TT is an actual supercar, 993TT is a sports car. Track times don't lie. How do I know? I own a 996TT and I've driven several 993's (and other ranges of 911's, including turbos). There's simply no comparison. Just like how the 997TT is far above the 996TT

i recently raced an m6 with exhaust for a few runs in my 996 turbo with only exhaust, otherwise stock. We started from a roll at around 20 mph..I had a 1.5 car length lead on him thru 4th gear and kept a 1 car length lead thru 5th.... The m6 is very respectably but I had him out of his element cause in 5th gear is where he started to gain. Its a badass top end car but the porsche low end torque took him every time at lower speeds. These cars are total opposites...like yin yang.

Well I have 40 years old and i grow up always knowing that 911 turbo always has been one of the fastest production cars made. 911 turbo always has been a reference aceleration car (40 years), so Never and ever any M of BMW ( I love BMW, actually I have a X5 ) can beat 911 turbo stock both cars.
Well it's obvious that the M6 is faster in a straight line, but I think if the Porsche driver was able to shift optimally, the race would have been much closer.

Any forced induced car will win in rolling start vs naturally aspired engine because there is pressure right off the bat...M6 is naturally aspired and needs to build pressure...it needs to go to 3000RPM to use that sweet TQ where it kills the Porsche lol...as for icy roads...humm ask BMW to make an M6 X lol...as for cornering...on dry BMW kills Porsche...because it exits the corners like a bee with that sweet TQ.
just watched the top gear race again... granted it won, but there are a few things u forgot to mention when u told people to go look at that, a the porsche is 4x4 b its got ceramic brakes a £5000 option ! and its was very very wet... in a straight line from a rolling start an m6 will beat almost anything on the rd. on a soaking wet mountain road with 507 bhp and rear wheel drive its gona get beaten by most 4x4 performance cars. in the dry it would be a different story i think...
Murcielago, F430 Spider, 997 911 turbo or a z06 corvette are about the only 3 cars you might ever come across that can beat an m6 in a rolling start..

What we do is have fun on twisty country roads. your speed tests are meaningless. In scotland, wide open dry straight roads are few and far between.

quite obvious that the guy driving the 996 was too busy looking at you to be really racing. looks like a total setup to me to favor a fat horrible handling car.
Weight difference, possibly a torque advantage (linear with the turbos), + most magazines report the M6's trap speeds at a couple of mph's faster than the 996tt, but the 996t's launch softer since nobody steps the clutch: so from a roll, should be close. Also, 996tt's dyno much higher than a 420flwp-awd car should...but, cars are different, so oh well.
I agree a 420hp 4wd will never beat a 507bhp 2wd from a rolling start like that, and I own a 911. However that is probably the only place the M6 will be up front every other condition the 911 will smoke the M6. So if you want to do rolling start for a 1/4 mile the M6 is perfect, if you want a fast car on the track/road the 911 is the one.
All these tiptronic/egear/automatic cars like M6,M5,RS6,any mercAMG and even 996and997TT tiptronic is crap at pulloffs and gearchanges, even with launchcontrol. If this M6 is standard I will race you for any amount from standstill to 250km/h with my standard 996TT manual gearbox 420hp, no contest. Some of these "M5/M6board" vids must be taken with a pinch of salt
tiptronic = automatic m6 m5 use smg . the only automatic thing for that gearbox is the clutch . they're better then manuals and faster , cause they're manual gearbox that have an automatically operated clutch . an automatic gearbox means preseted changes.
Either the 996TT is tiptronic or the M6 isn't standard, I have raced standard M6 and M5 with my 996TT manual gearbox(420hp) quarter mile. 996TT=12,69sec, M5=13,36sec, M6=13,10. If this blue 996TT was a tiptronic that would explain it because I have seen with my own eyes the new 997TT tiptronic do a 12,92sec quarter mile, slower than the 996TT manual!

just watched the top gear race again... granted it won, but there are a few things u forgot to mention when u told people to go look at that, a the porsche is 4x4 b its got ceramic brakes a £5000 option ! and its was very very wet... in a straight line from a rolling start an m6 will beat almost anything on the rd. on a soaking wet mountain road with 507 bhp and rear wheel drive its gona get beaten by most 4x4 performance cars. in the dry it would be a different story i think...

Murcielago, F430 Spider, 997 911 turbo or a z06 corvette are about the only 3 cars you might ever come across that can beat an m6 in a rolling start..
ANd the m6 is so much more than just a race car.. m6 is sweet!

That's the whole point, your races are set up so the BMW wins. The rolling start, the sraight line, the 160mph target and always in the dry. Put the car in a real life situation; some corners, some wet, narrow roads and the BMW is left for dead. No one lives on a drag strip, no one drives to work with a target speed of 160. What we do is have fun on twisty country roads. your speed tests are meaningless. In scotland, wide open dry straight roads are few and far between.

BMW gives you the sensation that the car spins around your hip in beautiful and controlled moves. BMW are made for those corners, narrow roads or twisty country roads. @nick5872 you guys that keep finding issue with the test are pathetic,this is what happen in real life situation most people will drive fast on motorway not on country roads as they are very narrow and dangerous to reach 3 figure speed,plus the people that own these cars don't really want to hit pot holes at high speed..if you want to talk about track then these are not track cars! these are to go shopping!these cars are made to go fast on motorways and cross continents as fast as possible

For gods sake Top gear raced an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, porsche 997 CARRERA (not even turbo) & a BMW M6 and the Porsche was fastest. ITS not about how much horsepower you've got IT'S HOW MUCH YOU CAN USE. if you want a balanced view look at "Top gear Aston martin V8 vs Porsche vs M6 part 2"
Porsche time 1.29.9sec avg speed = 84mph
BMW time 1.35.875 avg speed = 78mph
Porsche is and always will be better than BMW

some of these people dont understand how fast an M6 is, the m5 is the fastest saloon on earth it has the same engine and is lighter than an M5, the 996 turbo is how many years old ? how much bhp 420 stock, fact the bmw v10 m engine is 1 of the more powerful and advanced engines in the world. a 997 turbo would beat an m6 but a 996 turbo stock seriously wouldnt....

well never mind the 997 turbo which was released at the same time as the M6 absolutley BURNED it. Probably be prudent to mention that that there is almost nothing between a 996 & 997 turbo speed wise. So we can only wonder at another M5 & M6 board discrepancy.

forget about it, these guys are a joke. It's funny because in REAL life all the M5/M6 and AMG guys are so wanting to trade or sell for a Turbo porsche it's not even funny. Reason? because with very little cash outlay over stock, the turbo porsche can crank out ongodly horsepower and in stock form can outhandle the M5/6 landbarges which can't get out of their own fat azzes. truth and fact.
The M3 is another story. Probably the best M car ever made and one of my favorite cars of all time.

I just figured out what the dummy in the porsche was doing. Take a look and you will see that the car does not lurch or jerk, at all, which means that there was no gear change, which also means that this dummy has a tiptronic and left it in high gear. What-a-maroon. Hey, I have a novel idea, there are plenty of TT owners on 6speed, go there and race one, and then you can get your azz handed to you.

996TT: 0-60 in 4.1 - quarter in 12.5
That must have been an automatic 996tt or that car was SERIOUSLY abused to be beat like that by an M6

you forgot to mention 383 ft-lbs trque and 4,200 lb crb wght for M5.
420 ft-lbs of trque and 3,400 lb crb wght for 996tt.
PLEASE, it's torque that gets you down the track and the 996 has more torque and 800 lbs less weight and more aerodynamics. PLEASE, get real. The only reason the porsche lost was because of lack of driver skill, the car should have trounced your car. I have seen 996TT, in stock form do anywhere from 11.8 to 12.5 in the quarter.

good race totally far rolling start ! M6 has more power by nearly 100 bhp the porsche got smoked but id still rather have the 911 turbo and im a massive bmw fan, even tho the m6 is awesome, look around they beat lambos too its nothing to do with the porsche drivers skills.... its a faster car !!

I'd think the 996t was probably a tip. Manual stock 996 vs stock M6, the 996 should be very well matched in this race.

Weight difference, possibly a torque advantage (linear with the turbos), + most magazines report the M6's trap speeds at a couple of mph's faster than the 996tt, but the 996t's launch softer since nobody steps the clutch: so from a roll, should be close. Also, 996tt's dyno much higher than a 420flwp-awd car should...but, cars are different, so oh well.

I agree a 420hp 4wd will never beat a 507bhp 2wd from a rolling start like that, and I own a 911. However that is probably the only place the M6 will be up front every other condition the 911 will smoke the M6. So if you want to do rolling start for a 1/4 mile the M6 is perfect, if you want a fast car on the track/road the 911 is the one.

All these tiptronic/egear/automatic cars like M6,M5,RS6,any mercAMG and even 996and997TT tiptronic is crap at pulloffs and gearchanges, even with launchcontrol. If this M6 is standard I will race you for any amount from standstill to 250km/h with my standard 996TT manual gearbox 420hp, no contest. Some of these "M5/M6board" vids must be taken with a pinch of salt

tiptronic = automatic m6 m5 use smg . the only automatic thing for that gearbox is the clutch . they're better then manuals and faster , cause they're manual gearbox that have an automatically operated clutch . an automatic gearbox means preseted changes.

Either the 996TT is tiptronic or the M6 isn't standard, I have raced standard M6 and M5 with my 996TT manual gearbox(420hp) quarter mile. 996TT=12,69sec, M5=13,36sec, M6=13,10. If this blue 996TT was a tiptronic that would explain it because I have seen with my own eyes the new 997TT tiptronic do a 12,92sec quarter mile, slower than the 996TT manual!
