@susanaya2 Do a search on Grove Dictionary for the HWV number and then go to your local music library and look through the collected Handel works for the full score!
@K2A2T2 You don't need to continuously press down the thumb plate when playing the oboe, it depends on the register in which you want to play in and then you press the register key down that you need, there he doesnt need to use it
@Music4eva02 Thank you for that insightful answer but I do know how to play the oboe, FYI. The notes he was playing at that point were probably in the second octave at a guess and there, there are only two notes which don't require the thumb plate; B flat and C. For the majority of notes the thumb plate is needed to be pressed down, even when pressing the different octave keys. Unless this is a very unusual oboe which isn't played the same as usual I don't believe what you said is true.
First class oboe playing with first class orchestra a first class piece. Congratulation to all, but I will be given to the Musician personally the congratulation deserve in few years, I supose
The first thing I saw when the clip starting playing was the comments, and I was so weirded out by all the whale talk. WTF? But then I saw the guy's shirt, and I was like, "Ohhhh."
Albrecht is certainly the greatest living oboist. He has it all: musicality, expression, technique, ornaments, circular breathing, energy! He's amazing!
He moves me that is for sure and is inspiring beyond...
From what I know... double reed pitches tend be opposite of single reed pitches. Eg. Harder clar reed tend to go flat. Harder oboe reed tend to go sharp.
I wouldn't agree with that although, as an oboist, I can talk about that instrument. The heat makes an oboe reed go sharp so you then pull it out or lip it down to get it back in tune. Also, softer reeds are usually sharper then harder reeds.
Sort of... Fat cat is right. Harder reeds are sharper than softer reeds. Looks like someone doesn't make reeds lol. Plus Mayer is in Europe where they usually play at a higher pitch than in the US. But in the end, pitch is just relative as long as everyone is in tune with each other. I love his playing though...
I PLAY on reeds though so I'm basing this on my personal experience but maybe it's just the particular reeds that I've played on or maybe it's me.... who knows?! Harder reeds also need more lip pressure, which can send the pitch upwards.
The oboe goes from Bb below middle C, which is 'alto' (low female voice) register to, if you're lucky(!), top A although I only know the fingering for top G!! Then you have the Cor Anglais which is similar but plays a 5th lower and the bass oboe which goes lower still. Clarinets go a few notes low than the oboe and, I think, just as high so their range is slightly bigger. Bassoons are bass instruments so go much lower and contra bassoons are like foghorns! SO low!
Get rid of the Loree and buy an oboe that has a musical sound, and a reed style that allows a full sound. . Only place you will find Loree oboes is America. Dozens of very fine oboes on the market in Europe, if you are not brain-washed on trade names.
I think he's playing an instrument by Josef, a japanese maker. They use 'ivory' and different sorts of things to create the 'bulb' at the top of some of their instruments.
Youtube won't let me post their website... but just search "josef oboes."
His embellishments and tone really brought to plane understanding the emotions of the piece. Oh and nvgorcum...if you've ever met a professional oboe player they are all overly eccentric and..no offense to anyone...kind of insane. :)
he looks like the principal oboe player in berlin philharmonic orch. is he? and is that a lute? anyway great performance/recording. very fine indeed. the oboe is one precious instrument...
obviously u know nothing of music if u think the oboe sounds like a duck cuz the oboe has one of the most enchanting sounds and every band should have one
Actually, classical composers commonly spoke of the oboe as "what it would sound like if the duck were a song bird". I agree though, it has such a lovely timbre.
This is the one of the very BEST and most exciting versions of "Iris Hence Away!" I've ever heard. In vocal versions, the orchestra often plsys the "accompaniment" role, but here it is just as virtuosic as the soloist. Amazing!
Hello, congratulations on this great video ... please put mña svideos this special oboe player ... A question with which this recording plays oboe? Thanks
Yes he plays Buffet Green Line Oboe but his instrument is quite strange with this special white "ring" in the top of the instrument... In my opinion his instrument is specially tuned for him. Anyway he's a great oboist (his Mozart Concerto recording is amazing)
Resources makes differences:More money and resources you have beter are the results. This man is the first oboe in Berlin Philharmoniker. Not only.May be he has even an accord for instruments because the Buffet Crampon sponsors him. He is very lucky. And the oboe he is playing is not the normal model. If you see at the top you can see the viena's oboe model: sweeter in sound like oboe d'amore.Same tecnique that contemporary
It is indeed not a Vienna oboe - by which I assume you meant a Zuleger Model Wiener oboe, as played in the Vienna philharmonic. This is simply a standard French Full Conservatory - the white bit at the top is a mounting - something a few makers have explored. Josef, in Japan, for example as made a great many experiments with different top mounting and reed well materials.
I know some people claim it changes the sound a bit...I think the theory behind having the top bit in a different material is that it changes the way the vibrations of the reed are conveyed throughout the rest of the instrument...If you ever get a chance to try/hear an oboe made by Josef in Japan, they seem to be quite big on different materials for the top bit. As for the bell, it does the same thing but at the other end - changes the way the sound leaving the oboe resonates.
Yes, i tried this Josef with the different top and bell and it is very good and you are right it does make difference in the vibration. For me it was a bit stopping the vibration but in a way this could be good...
I was a volunteer at this past years IDRS Conference in Ithaca and I know some people adored the Josef oboes and some people couldn't stand them. Chacun a son gout!
Maybe for the Americans could be good becasue the reeds are very easy and they need something to stop a bit.Probably that's why they play on Loree most of them because are a bit fat on the top(normally they where made for german playing before) but i am not a specialist and they are many things i don't know and I don't undestand about the oboists in America.I like Marigaux very much!
There are many things I don't understand about the oboists in America - like why they reject the gorgeous sounds Europeans make...I'd rather sound like Mayer than Mack anyday!
Yes,I was very surprised when i read the Double Reed Magazine and there is an article about Albrecht Mayer's CD with Strauss. And out of nowhere the author puts out the name or Woodhams and claiming that his recording is much better and it is in his blood to play Strauss right.I don't understand this.First it is in Mayer's blood more then his and second why even compare in a article about Albrecht Mayer's CD.Yes Woodhams is a big oboist but writing this kind of things i don't undestrand...
American oboists can be silly and ethnocentric - as Americans in general. I am an American but I definitely don't see how Americans can miss out on the beauty of the other national styles of oboe playing. Its a gorgeous instrument with lots of possibilities to enjoy!
As for the Strauss being in Woodhams blood, I would imagine that comment was due to Woodhams proximity to John DeLancie for whom the Strauss concerto was written (I believe that is the case anyway - I invite someone with more grounding in fact to come in and stomp on me)
no no, i think you have it right. de lancie was woodhams' teacher at curtis and so the thinking is that he can play it better since his teacher inspired the piece (which is an absolutely moronic thing to think). and i agree with the comment about americans rejecting anything that isnt american. we are all so busy worrying about what tabuteau or mack would think about our playing that we refuse to step into the 21st century and play with creativity and energy like the europeans are doing.
Also, I believe not only is it the reeds, but even if you got a Marigaux, it's pitched too high for how we play here in America. I blieve it's around the 442-445 range. So, that would kind of throw you off in most places. Otherwise, I like you, would totally go for a Marigaux after I heard the way Fumiaki Miyamoto played one.
You know, I have to disagree with you on that. Not all American oboists reject European oboe playing. I am an American and I love it, but it is more in my personality to favor the sound of Tabuteau. The mellowness and roundness of tone caught my attention more.
This is fierce.

im so new at this...
can someone know the fundamental difference between a bassoon, oboe and clarinet <--(only one i know) soundwise?
i mean, mostly throughout this video, the pitch was pretty high, im wondering if the oboe can hit very low notes too, like the kinda bassy ones...
nelmsters 2 years ago
oboe sounds very sharp and focused, clarinet sounds really flat... the oposite of the oboe (as in the sound), and the flute is in the middle

oboe can hit low notes too -- like middle c (well, kind of low) If i remember correctly

The oboe goes from Bb below middle C, which is 'alto' (low female voice) register to, if you're lucky(!), top A although I only know the fingering for top G!! You know, I have to disagree with you on that. Not all American oboists reject European oboe playing. I am an American and I love it, but it is more in my personality to favor the sound of Tabuteau. The mellowness and roundness of tone caught my attention more.
